Logan grimnar

Logan Grimnar is a great special character in my opinion, but in the same breath he is also very expensive. To me this is balanced out by the fact that he has the equivilant of 2 sagas, the option of using either a frost blade or a power fist (including dividing his attacks in half) in CC while still having a SB, he can give nearby units +1 attack for a turn as well as give his own squad the choice of one special rule per turn, and (to me this is one of his best parts) he allows you to take Wolf Guard as Troops choices which frees up some room in your Elites options allowing you to take more of the cool Elite options as well as have a hardcore scoring unit with access to cheaper and more wargear than a standard squad. So all around to me he is worth taking.

But my question is is he worth taking in a list that isn't all Wolf Guard Terminators? The reason I ask is because while I like to be slightly competitive I lean more towards the modeling and fluff aspect of the game, I also think we are spoiled for choice in the Elites section. So I am wanting to take Logan for 2 reasons, 1 I will be able to have all the options from the Elites secion that I want and 2 it will give me a rock hard character that I can make my own counts as model for.

I just don't know how effective he would be with an army that dosen't use just Wolfwing. I will of course be taking a unit of TDA Wolf Guard as a troops for his bodyguard but thats really all I am planning on having in my army TDA wise besides my Rune Priest. This army isn't so much about winning its more about having all the converted units I want in my army. But I ould still like to have a little tactical apptitude. So is he worth it?

Overall - yes. completely.

with but a few wolf guard - still yes, just because he's freakin logan grimnar. But if you're asking if you should take a different character to shave off some points and just have the few wolf guard be elites.. Idk how it would hurt. Maybe try a dumbed down wolf lord version of Ragnar Blackmane. I made one that's like.. 200?? points. something like that. That would shave off 75 points from logan grimnar for a still pretty decent model.

Honestly I think Logan Grimnar should just be taken anyway just cuz he's that amazing.. but that's personal opinion

Use him with x5 multi melta and assoult cannon\cyclone missile launcher long fangs to kill 2 mechs on the DP drop.

Or use him with Fenrisian Wolves to give all of them +1 attack to make loads of attacks :)

I don't have Fenrisian Wolves in my army and my Long Fangs all have missle launchers lead by a TDA WG with a cyclone missle launcher which would still be effective with Logan but I am pretty set on keeping him with his Wolf Guard as I don't like the idea of 1 keeping him away from the CC as then I would lose the effectivness of The Fang of Morkai and Logans Living Legend ability.

I honestly think he is better outside a complete wolf guard army.

A squad of terminators are pretty costly, and far easier to justify if they're troop. You have the right idea - him, a single, kitted out terminator squad, and fill the rest of your army with regular troops. You'll be fine.

So then shoulder I give him and his unit some type of Land Raider? I know a Drop Pod is preferable but I am short on cash and only have one which is used for my Ven-dread. My army is mainly a foot slogging force so would the unit be pretty safe foot slogging with its ++ save or should I try and fork out for another DP to get the unit into combat as soon as possible? Also it is a 3 man TDA WG squad with Logan as the leader.

Short answer , YES

long answer in a list that is over 1500 points I always give myself two high point units such as a LR or Logan. In a list that is under 2k I think the only option to run Logan is in a non Wolf Wing list, you can bring 3 WG for around 45 each to add to as leaders to your GH, the added leadership and weapon options are very nice, but I would not go above 5 until you get into the 2k list range.

10 GH 1 WG and Logan is a pretty nasty unit when combined with a LR or Logan with 8 GH in a DP list is always a nice delivery.

But what if I am wanting to keep Logan and his WG together? I think a Land Raider would be a little pricey for just 4 models and since it would be the only vehicle in my list wouldn't it be just like a big target? Admitidly I've never seen a Land Raider die easily but it almost seems to me like I would be better off having Logans squad be in a drop pod. I only play 2k point games so I could take a second unit of PA WG in my army and divide them up which would come in handy as I would give each one a combi melta and a powerfist which will give me 2 melta weapons in a unit (though 1 can only be used once) and a cheaper power fist then the one I could give to a GH. and it will be 2 PF attacks all the time instead of the 2 on the charge and 1 normal.

Well I guess I answered my own question  I'll take Logan and his squad and put them in a second drop pod. Thanks for the help brothers :(

Land Raiders CAN go down easily. You just have to use the right tools. Anyway. If you go th DP way make sure that the Great Wolf drops in the second wave to make sure he will do something for you and not see every enemy gun pointed at his unit. And I agree if you give them a Raider chances are it will not last very long.

if you take them in a drop pod you still have 2 models more open in that drop pod (or 1 TDA model) if i was you i'd consider adding a Rune Priest and Wolf Priest, just a Rune Priest in TDA, or even Arjac. Arjac is a total BA, i use him and 3 other TDA wolf guard lead by a TDA Wolf Priest in a drop pod to take out just about anything that needs to be taken out. the 3 wolf guard are usually kitted out with SS/TH or SS/FB or dual wolf claws depending on who i'm faceing, that way they either have their 3++ save if they are going against some heavy hitters or can re-roll BOTH to hit and to wound rolls thanks to their wolf claws and the Wolf Priests preferred enemy rule. Arjac can also be used to just DESTROY anything within 6" right before he charges them and he and his squad tears through who ever their faceing.

Thanks for the suggestion but its already covered by a TDA Rune Priest mentioned above ;) only problem with that is I would like to keep him closer to my footslogging units so I can use Storm Caller and give at least a few units a cover save. Though it would be cool to have a DP Rune Priest and use JotWW.

I also have a Wolf Priest in PA but he's joining my Blood Claw unit
