Space Wolves campaign

Me and my freinds in my local gaming club have decided to make a Space Wolf themed campaign that will be fluff driven. We have represenitives of almost every army and each has been made into a suitable viking theme. We have the Space Wolves (3 players), Tyranids (Hive Fleet Jormungandr), Chaos Marines (Skyrars Dark Wolves and The Fallen Bretheran), Eldar (based off of Norse elves, craftworld symbol is the world tree), Necrons (The Yngir sounds alot like the Ymir giant), Orks (Warboss Grendel Wolf Killa), Witch Hunters (Sisters of battle Order of The Valkyerie led by Inquisitor Valya), Daemon Hunters (led by Grand Master Heimdall) and Daemons of Chaos (The legions of Hel).

Anyway what we are doing is pretty much taking the idea from DoW that all these factions are interested in this planet for one reason or another and most of them are pretty self explanitory. What we are having trouble with is why the Space Wolves would be on the planet in the first place. It is going to be a planet in the Eastern Fringe so its far away from Fenris, we've thought about a great hunt, a rivalry between one of the Wolf Lords and the Wolf Killa (already exists in our fluff), that the Wolves swore an oath to protect the planet, that Grand Master Heimdall or Inquisitor Valya requested their aid, or that they are hunting Skyrar and the Fallen Bretheran. We have all these ideas we just don't know which one is the most plausible. And we also figured we would see if anyone had any other ideas?

The planet was one of Russ' pitt stops before hitting the Eye of Terror, and three Great Companies of Space Wolves are being sent there to secure clues?

Only problem with that is this planet is no where near the Eye

An old friend, Inigo Einherjar sent a request for aid- saying he had found an ancient SW Battle Barge.

What he doesnt know is that it was stolen, and the occupants killed, by Skyars Darkwolves.

Inigo Einherjar?

We heard there was a good fight brewing and showed up.

Amen to that BUT thats why the Orks are there haha

In your case, Grand Master Heimdall or Inquisitor Valya.

*Shrugs* I just like that reason- there are friend over there, and enemies we know, perhaps theyre trying to lead the wolves into a trap, but frankly, theyre going to fight there way into and out of it in true Sixth Legion style.

OH ok. What we have set is that there is a Necron Tomb on this planet which the forces of chaos are attacking to summon a legion of daemons and send the planet into chaos, the Eldar are their to prevent the awakening of the Necrons, the Orks are there because its gonna be a big toss up, a splinter fleet of Jormungandr is on its way, the Ordos Malleus are there to prevent and fight the daemons, the sisters of battle are there because the world has a sacred shrine (maybe something to do with Russ?), we just got word that another freind finished his Imperial Guard army so they will be the planets PDF. So all we had left was a concrete reason for the Wolves
the PDF Commanding Officer's father was in a caimpaign with the wolves and may have saved Logan's life or something and is calling in a debt.

Hmmmm I like that. I like that alot actually but I think I'll have it be so the planets founder saved Logan (maybe back when he was just a Wolf Guard or a GH). I'll pitch it to the boys and see what they think, cheers

close enough. of course its named after the danish king from beowulf yes?

Of course ;) we have also sprinkeled in a few other tid bits of norse mythology into the fluff of our armies such as Grendel Wolf Killa was a warboss who destroyed a great company and so has alot of Space Wolf iconography and pelts and such and he was hunted down by my wolf lord who ripped his arm off in a great battle but before he could kill him Grendel escaped. He has now replaced his arm with a bionic and now him and my wolf lord have hunted eachother ever since. This is just one example :)

Ooooo, sounds fun  . I wish our group did this kind of stuff, but unfortunately everyone is kind of gun-shy 'cuz the last guy who did it was not playing fair....

What a fluff driven campaign? The way we do ours is we create fluff and names for our characters that interlap and we all agree on the theme and set a goal that we will create a army with that theme and 2 themed terrain pieces each as well as 2 effects based off those terrain peices. Then we set a basic backdrop for why the armies are fighting, throw our character names, terrain features in a hat and draw them randomly as well as rolling for scenarios. Whatever name we draw is our first opponent and whatever terrain piece we draw counts as an objective in the game. If the game isn't based off objectives then they just create a terrain effect for whatever unit controles them. Then we take note of anything that happens in the game and when its all said and done we turn it into a narative. We don't really play to see who wins the campaign its more of an excuse to make armies, terrain pieces and see what happens.

Considering your fondness of Beowulf's text, here are some other bits you may want to use to deepen the fluff:

- Beowulf is presented with golden treasures for his feats by Hrothgar, (and is eventually made heir) to the disdain of much of the court. Could there be some mighty hoard on this planet - an ancient Chapter heirloom or STC perhaps?

- Remember that Beowulf's sword fails against Grendel's Mother - could be a nice bonus objective for you against the Orks (slaying Grendel using your hands only - no bonuses from frost blades, etc.

- Beowulf is mortally wounded when facing the Dragon - perhaps you should deploy a Lone Wolf against the Necrons (Void Dragon geddit?) and he MUST die, or you lose the game?

Just food for thought....

p.s. I like the sound of this campaign a lot.

We_ll throw those ideas around but we already have most of our specials set up. I'm glad you like it :HQ:

Cause they found new Type of Mead on that planet ? lol

Someone beat me to it, but I think this would not be a good reason in this case.

Probably reasons: general distress call goes out via astropath and a Wolf Lord intercepts the call for aid and diverts to kill the forces of chaos and add to his own saga.

The planet has an ancient tie to the Sons of Russ and as such their call for aid has been answered.

Wolves are in system to take on provisions/ordinance after a protracted campaign and as such are able to respond.

can i please ask that you not have Logan saved by a member of this planet's mililtary/pdf?

i only ask this because of the many, many times this is used as a fluff excuse and makes me wonder just how imcompetent Logan is in CC that he needs saving every 10 seconds. sounds more like princess peach than the Great Wolf.

maybe try making the hold a shrine to Russ, outpost of House Belhoweveryouspelltheirname, resupply point of the Wolves or just general world that needs saving. just using "i once saved logan" is quickly becoming the DiY way of shoehorning the Wolves where you want them to be.

While it does dishonor the High King technicly it dosen't have to even be Logan. We could have it be so that a past Great Wolf swore an oath and as current Great Wolf it is Logans obligation to fullfill that oath. That being said while Logan can definitly take care of himself he isn't invulnerable (not counting Eternal Warrior) and I am sure he as well as every other chapter master have had moments where they needed aid. I mean Calgar was almost killed by the Hive Lord and his bodyguard saved him. Thats why most chapter masters have honour guards. But out of respect for the old man we will try and come up with something differant
