Honour Guard

What are your thoughts on our honour guard in general. I realy like them but some people seem to have a problem with them. I was wondering if they are viable and have you guys got any tactics for them. Weapons you use for them, sqauds and characters good for them, and how do you use them. Thanks for your help.

P.S I am quite new to blood angels and warhammer 40,000 in gereral so any help would be appreciated.

i love my jump pack honour guard. i run them at about a 215 pt squad with the blood champion and chapter banner. they are amazing to have running with the brunt of your forces and makes everything you have amazingly more killy with the +1 atk banner(gotta love that 12" range). but yeah, they'll ruin anythings day, especially if you multi-assault with something stupid(like mephiston)

The banner does not give +1 attack to everyone in a 12" radius. It only gives that bonus to the unit it's attached to.

I love the HG, except the 5 man maximum.

HGs designed to be shooty (either plasma or melta heavy, could use packs or razorbacks or drop pods) are fine. But for a combat unit I'd rather get something larger like a Vanguard.

My Honour Guard are my most expensive unit, and I'm not sure it's the most effective way to run them to be honest. But, I give them 2 PW, PF and melta (on the same guy), and the chapter banner at 260. Some people throw the fist, melta, and banner all on the same model.

I haven't had a chance to use my honor guard yet, but mine is set up with jump packs, two storm shields, and two lightning claws, with no single model getting more than one upgrade. This runs be 235 points, and it packs quite a hit. Attach a Librarian to it, and you can use Unleash Rage to re-roll hits. Plus, it provides the 6" priest bubble. I can't wait to try them out!

On a sidenote, I have an extra mini with a lightning claw and a banner. I plan using it soon, with a Librarian and Dante attached. Thats a lot of power weapon attacks.

my chapter banner is on my SG + dante. when i run HG, its for a double anti-mech punch. i once gave them 3x SS/MG but that flubbed. too pricey, and they got assaulted by chaos termis who they held up, but lost badly too.

the only time i feel like i must use HG is when the rest of my list is DS'ing and i want an early punch.

I use 5 in a Razorback: PF, PW, Mg, Fl, SN. They are joined with a Librarian. It's a very effective jack of all trades that can provide strong support to any other unit. I love it.

Someone mentioned HG being shooty oriented. I can see their angle, but here is my view about the HG:

The shooty role is better served by Sternguard, the assault role is better served by the basic ASM squad or the Vanguard. Where the HG shines is flexibility and the non-IC Sanguinary Novitiate. They make an incredible support unit for HQs, and when joined by a support HQ (Librarian, Tycho) they make an incredible support for the whole army.

I've been considering how best to use the honour guard and I think I'm going to go with 2 Power fists, power weapon, blood champion, and company banner. One power fist will carry the banner and the other a flamer. Thats starting to get expensive but I feel like with and HQ choice attached they're going to murder a lot of bad guys and be effective at supporting the troops choices.

I run mine with a Chaplain in a Stormraven & Furisio in tow. I run a blood champion, one with a pair of lightning claws, one with power sword/chapter banner/infernus pistol & one with a thunder hammer & infernus pistol. This bundled units is one of my best I have used so far. Very hard hitting in close combat, reroll hits on the charge & FNP due to the Noviatite. The gunship gets them where they need to be & the Furioso is there as an added insurance for the win. Very nice looking too.

Honour Guard - Chapter Banner: All frendly units within 12" of the banner bearer re-roll failed Morale and Pinning Tests. In addition all models in the same unit as the chapter banner have +1 Attack whilst the banner bearer is alive.

Here's how I run mine.

Librarian (Strength of Sanguinas and Blood Lance)

Power Sword, Bolt Pistol, Chapter Banner

Power Sword, Plasma Pistol

Lightning Claw, Lightning Claw

Power Fist, Bolt Pistol

Noviate (Chainsword, Bolt Pistol)

Run those boys in a Razorback with twin-linked heavy flamer. Has worked fairly well for me thus far.

I have been considering using them as support units to mechanized 10 man RAS.

Consider:

HG (2xMelta, RB-TLHF)

190pts

Over:

RAS 5 Marines (Melta, RB-TLHF)

+Sanguinary Priest

180pts

Cons: HG have one less body, are not scoring, requires an HQ choice and the Priest cannot remain in the RB alone.

Pros: Two MGs, Priest cannot be singled out, option for Blood Champ.

Both units have the same number of attacks on the charge, HG have one more when receiving the charge. Add PF, PW or TLAC to flavor. Thoughts ?

2 points to consider for folks here:

1. if you have a TH or PF, don't bother paying 5 points more for the IP over the MG. you do not need/get the extra off-hand attack. save your points and give the model the bigger gun

2. no matter how i kit them, in order to get both HG and VV anywhere near the survivability and impactful nature of SG, you have to spend at least 30-50 more points. if you get them invul saves (which is the major reason to take HG/VV over SG, that i can tell (outside of the FOC, which is irrelevant cause i always run dante :) ) that cost rises to 60+ more points. not fun.

*this post was provided in part for by Wookie's campaign to promote use of SG. Thank you*

Sanguinary Guard are actually....pretty good. They are just a very difficult tool to utilise effectively without them getting wiped out.

Putting them with a Sanguinary Priest makes them almost impossible to kill with small arms. And if you give your opponent enough armoured targets to think about, they won't really be getting shot with Vindicator shells or other such horrors.

It is far too easy to over-tool the honour guard and end up making them deadly but inefficient. While they can be tooled up to deal with anything i prefer to keep them focused on providing support.

I run mine with just a power fist and a company banner while the rest carry pistol & ccw all in a razorback together with a librarian. The squad supports my tac squads by granting them feel no pain and a morale re-roll while also acting as a counter assault unit.

With unleashed rage the squad can kill about 7 MEQ on the charge allowing it to punch well above it's numbers for not a lot of points; if you feel you need more then add the chapter banner. that gives your librarian one more power to support your list with - i prefer fear of the darkness to mess with the enemy battle plan but depending on the amount of terrain then sanguinary shield can be nice too for further army support.

Although I never fielded them yet, my idea of Honorguar was always on the lines of Droppod 4 meltas. But as mentioned by Lithanial, there could be an oportunity to run them at the minimum in a Rzrback to help other unities...

I also agree that it's easy to go wild and give them all Power wepons and so on, making them expensive yet not really efficient for the cost.

This right here. This is exactly how I equip mine (I even put a power fist on my banner bearer). The only difference is that I usually have Seth running around with mine.

Due to their built-in priest, honor guard start out as a support unit. You can make them into something more killy for more points, but if you're going to do that, why not go with vanguard instead? You get a bigger squad size and a free power weapon instead.

Because you get a free SP with HG and if you attach a SP to VV you lose HI? I'm still looking forward to trying my HG / VV stormshield / Lightning claws squads.
