I'll add in a silly rules question at the same time instead of starting a new thread

If you take a special weapon instead of your bolter in a grey hunters squad do you keep your bolt pistol and close combat weapon so you still get the bonus attack in close combat?

Depending on how many points I'm doing, I'll either put Bear or Warrior Reborn on my main Lord choice. With Bear and a Thunderwolf, he makes an awesome anchor to make sure his line gets held. In larger games (i.e. 2500 points) I'll swap it out for Warrior Reborn since he'll be one of three ICs, so I can handle the loss and his added firepower makes up for it.

Wolfkin seems like it'd be great to have if I could squeeze it in when I use three ICs, since all six attached wolves would become I5 making them even deadlier. I've actually gotten them into combat in my last few games, and holy hades they tear stuff apart. Between the six wolves, they're averaging 2-5 kills a game, usually against Space Marines, so they're definitely getting theirs points back for that.

@Allerka, It's Warrior Born, not Reborn. But that sounds like beastly unit.

Whoops, my bad (yay for posting before breakfast). But yeah, it is a beastly unit. Two Wolf Lords and a WGBL on Thunderwolves, plus a unit of them, fully assembled they destroy anything they touch in combat (seriously, I haven't even come close to losing with them in combat against some of the nastiest stuff in the game). The main Lord has Bear or Warrior Born as I mentioned, the other has Majesty to make sure they stay where I need them to (though the few times I've actually had to use it I failed the re-roll too, so it hasn't been very useful so far :)), but no saga on the WGBL. I'd like to stick Wolfkin on him, just need to free the points up for it. ;)

I use Saga of the Bear for the expensive lord, but really value both beastslayer and wolfkin - in their place, both can be worth far more than their meagre price tags suggest - 2 packs of 15 I5 wolves (inc cybers and the saga) costs just over 260 points - bargain to put 30 models down of that speed and hitting power. Beastslayer is also really handy on an appropriately equipped IC - with a frostblade or claws they can kill fexs and daemon princes before they can even react, and isn't that what sagas are all about?

Saga of the Bear does save you alot though - there are many strength 8+ weapons out there <_<

in all seriousness, I use saga cause of every ninja power fist that streaks across a combo to one-hit kill my Wolf lord these last 10 years. no more sucker punches.

it really sucks when a punk with a pfist insta kills the new WL model you just finished. now my lord isnt as killey as he can be, but by russ and the all-father, he can take a beating and give it back.

WLK

Instead of a Wolf Lord, I run a Battle Leader with Saga of the Hunter. It's not as good as a Thunderwolf Lord with Saga of the Bear, but the mental game I get to play with my opponents is fun, and it fits my WGBL's fluff as a combat pragmatist with a penchant for ambushes.
