Godhead
If you have an IC with 2x fen wolves attached to a squad in CC. Then this unit essentially forms 3 different units as far as allocating attacks. Now my opponents ALL ignore the wolves as they will go away if the IC dies. I mentioned this to my buddy who also plays SW's and says he uses his wolves to block access to his IC. His opponents can't allocate attacks at the IC since they aren't in base to base, but the IC can attack because the wolves are his wargear. Does this work, and is this in fact true? If so then, that makes me alot happier with my wolves, because frankly if I don't get shot, I find the wolves are lack luster in CC, and kind of get in my way. Plastenarius
In the Codex FAQ they covered, somewhat, your question. The wolves do not act as a retinue during CC. So yes whatever is in base to base with the IC can attack him specifically. Now if you were to work it so only a couple models of the unit could get into base to base with the IC then, yes, only a couple of models could attack him, the rest would have to attack the unit as a whole. An IC must be into base to base however, so trying to stick him behind the wolves would just negate his attacks. I would say also the wolves would be allowed to be involved in wound allocation for the unit since the IC had joined that unit. If the IC is alone and they allocate all their attacks to your IC then, you're hosed. Lumdin
My understanding of fen wolves as wargear is as follows. They are treated as a separate unit in close combat like an IC. So they can only attack models they are in base contact with. But on the flip side models that are only in base contact with the wolves has to pump their attacks into them. So get your wolves in base contact with his pf model or ic, and they have to waste all their attacks on the wolf. Your wolves have to stay within 2 inches of your ic that bought them. Your opponent models that are not in base contact use the within 2 inch rule of models that are in base contact. I think this is right and hope it makes sense. I am sure one of the long fangs around here can clarify. Updating from my BB.
