Favourite drop pod impact unit

Recommended Posts

I've been experimenteing with using Logan Grimnar passing relentless onto a pack of long fangs and using them as a high impact (and high points cost!) drop pod pack. It go me thinking - what are the rest of you wolves using as high impact podding packs? Any ideas and suggestions most welcome!

To start things off, I've been using Grimnar (mainly for the relentless but also to get him straight in the thick of the action where he excels) and the now ever-present 5ML conifiguration of 6 Long fangs + a wolf guard pack leader, usually with an assault cannon, for the extra potential split fire. This has really performed pretty well, and the fear of Grimnar means opponents aren't that keen to charge them either! Their firepower is pretty awesome, and can appear anywhere ;)

Personaly I use a venerable dread in my drop pod. With a multi melta and heavy flamer it forces my opponents to field tanks or large units some where in cover so they don't get incinerated or hold them in reserve. This is great for me since I play against BA and Nids a lot and I can hunt and destroy those Baal preds and Zonathropes early in the game

I like the idea of this, but wouldn't you say that Long Fangs tooled up this way would be better off at a distance? I mean ML are 48" range. Plus a drop pod should drop into enemy lines, so wouldn't you want an assaulty unit?

What about WG in TDA with hvy weapons?

Arjac / WP / 7 GH MG, MotW, WS Pod 1

10 GH MG, MG, MotW, WS Pod 2

10 GH PG, PG, PP, WS, Pod 3

This is a versatile 3 pod list, in that if I want to hold Arjac in reserve due to an opponents unconventional deployment, I can land the GH on objectives and bring down Arjac when there are juicy targets abound.

If there is a target then either I can bring in some plasma support for hard troops or meltas for any armor/transport destruction.

Vrox.

If you're drop pod assaulting Long Fangs in you can give them Multi Meltas for the same points as Missile Launchers and with the relentless special rule the multi melta is actually useful with is 12" of death.

Yeah, but you forget... thats a 275pt upgrade.

Kinda steep eh?

My favorite- 10 Grey Hunters, a pair of special weapons, a powerfist, a totem, and a grin.

Yes GM, but Nostromo was doing it anyway. I concur with Arjac-you-up; if you are going to Drop Logan in with Relentless Long Fangs, then don't bother with the Missile Launchers, within 12 inches the Multi-melta will outperform them by miles, and they are the same price. Of course, I'd probably not go with 5 Multi-meltas either, but would probably throw 2 Plasma Cannon into the mix to give me some nice anti-infantry action.

I'm with you in general though, and prefer 10 Hunters in two Pods, and a Dreadnought in a 3rd (or maybe WG in TDA). I leave the Long Fangs in the back to provide long-ranged supporting firepower, as they were designed to.
