Mark 16 Damocles Armour Sculpt

From an armor standpoint, you want those overlaps in the armor, imagine if a combat knife hit those plates, it'd skip from one plate to the next doing little if any damage to the armor.

If it was like the Tau plates with hit little line insets it'd have no purpose other than decoration, and that's a Emperor's Children issue, I can't imagine these Ultramarines making armor without a utilitarian point of view taken into consideration.

I personally also like the way the overlapping plates look, lets you have mobility without too much of a sacrifice in protection.

As I recall from my history lessons, Roman soldiers used a similar method when they advanced on enemy positions in that their shields would overlap, thus leaving fewer weak points to penetrate (arrows, pikes etc). It certainly makes sense to me (and looks cool to boot so +1 from me :( )

Thanks heaps for all the input guys, and coming from the source so to speak is a real bonus!!

Have listened to all the information presented and it seems to me the way forwards is to leave the belly plates with an overlap, so that saves me a job! Thanks guys!

Didn't take any piccies last night as the hand I was trying to sculpt was far to rubbish to share, so was dumped and I hit the internet in search of hints and tips. I think I have found a way forwards, so will try again this evening.

Again, thanks for all the input everyone, and those Iron Man piccies are COOL!

Hello all, update time! After a rather rubbish attempt at sculpting hands the other night, they were scrapped and I focused a little more and had a clearer idea of how I wanted to approach them.

The fingers were sculpted, then cooked. Once cooled, the thumbs were then done. Makes things a whole lot easier!

After cooking the thumbs, carefully removed the proxy stock from his steel like grip and I think, job’s a good ‘un.

Oh, and don’t worry about the weird head looking thing in there, just some blutak to work out volume and scale for the helmet sculpt.

I searched for another Borat clip to share, and I found one that fit perfectly, but was offensive to women, so I chose not to post it.

It's looking really good, if you ever decide to cast it and sell some, please let me know, I beg you, cause I really love these new Ultramarines.

Are you gonna sculpt multiple weapon options? Or is he just gonna have one loadout?

OK, me again, not had a chance to work on this as much as I had wanted to, I stupidly said that I would have it built and painted by the end of July. That is not going to happen…

Anyway, worked on the helmet, which took far too long to do, but there you go.

Also, as a result of some feedback, I re-sculpted the knee pads. Much better now I think.

I agree with Terminatorinhell (not completely, though, since there is no reason for one as pure as a terminator to go to hell).

Your Mk16 armour is really sweet, but the Marine needs some more mass. He's too slender by now.

Bulk 'em up, sez I!

OK, it's a fair point. Am working on adding some more bulk to the limbs and see where that leads.

As I am going to miss my deadline anyway, figure I may as well get it right!

Thanks for the input all and the extra work (grumble, grumble) hehehehe

Wow! Reading the first page i was thinking about a hood, some joints protection and adding details to the back. And now, when you've done that... This marine looks fantastic!

The only critics is about the position of the right leg's upper joint (when it connects with the body) - it looks awkward, maybe because of the angle. but it really looks unhuman to me.

There has been something about that right side that has been a little skewed. It was based off a good armature, but I guess when I was laying down the body of clay it has become a little pushed out.

I have not worked on that thigh as yet to bulk it out, I will try and bring the shape back into the ahem, crotch area, and see if that sorts the problem. If not, then I will have to saw off the leg and reposition...

Isignia wise, not got any brass etch for the big Ultra symbol on the chest so will have to improvise on that one...

Hi all, after a lot of feedback and I must admit, I noticed it too, I have added more bulk to the lower portions of the armour. I also tried to fix a weird anatomy issue with his right hip, it looked a little…odd.

Also did the Tau inspired plasma pistol. Needs a little filler here and there to really sharpen it up, but am pleased with how it came out. I added a quick layer of white primer to disclose any issues so I have some areas that need attention.

Overall, not too far from the finish line from a sculpting point. I need to add some filler as some of the fimo has split in parts, I suspect that has something to do with repeated bakings, but have not got enough experience with it to say for sure.

Thanks guys!

Well after a bit of slight planning and some scratching of heads, decided to do the backpack as the hybrid I feel it’s meant to be. The backpack is not featured strongly in the artwork, so I hope I have done it justice here. Of the parts that I can see, I have tried to recreate.

Make with the images I hear you say:

Still needs a few bits here and there. Thanks for looking all!

The back pack looks fantastic, as does the rest of the model. The only thing I'm not 100% on is the plasma pistol. I love the design and look of it but I think it's a little too long. I know this isn't really an issue in terms of the marine being able to use it or anything, but I think it looks 'wrong' aestheticly speaking if you see what I mean. Just my opinion though.

Thanks

James
