Anti-Horde duty Predator vs Whirlwind

I have an upcoming game against an Ork army. Normally I like to use my Long Fangs to whittle down the Orks before close combat but I am thinking of the worth of the Whirlwind and Predator. A Predator with Heavy Bolters and an Autocannon is the same points cost as a Whirlwind but which is better. The WW doesn't need line of sight and can ignore cover saves but the Pred pops out 6 S5 AP4 shots and 2S7 AP4 shots, that 8 in total and it can take out lightly armoured trucks.

Which is the better in your opinion?

Are you limiting your anti-horde options to predator and whirlwind only?

A LS with 2xHB can decimate hordes as well as challenge objectives late game

A LS with TML + HB adds anti-transport capability and is just as good at hunting hordes

5 long fangs with 2 missile launchers and 3 heavy bolters for one of your heavy support.

5 Long fangs with 2 Lascannons and 3 missile launchers for the second heavy support.

And a Whirlwind to get any troops that hide in cover.

The missiles will either do great against hordes with their frag missiles,or help to take out the trucks. The lascannons will tear through the battlewagons pretty reliably. The heavy Bolters will do a good job against normal troops...and remember you can allways split fire with both Long Fang squads. If he drops his Lootas in Cover for the invul save, use the Whirlwind to batter them into dust.

And best of all, that set up will do wonders against ANY army.

let me ask you. do you want a game designed to crush the orks or do you want a game where its not a rock vs scissors?

honestly i would suggest you use what you would normally use in a all comers list, but thats just me.

however i would also use something i rarely use.... so in my case the whirlwind just because it looks cool and is some fun.

i say flip a coin

Whirlwind, every time- lootas in cover? Got that handled. Trying to sneak around behind terrain? SUPRISE! Your still dead. Kustom Force Field? We just dont care. The potential to pin multiple squads after having dropped them down below fearless levels? Excellent.

Not to mention 2d6 pick the highest on armor penetration means that its pretty good at popping any trukks it ends up hitting too.

Have to agree here. Don't limit yourself to just the predator and the whirlwind. I've found that squadron of land speeder typhoons wreaks absolute havoc on horde armies. My brother-in-law, who is a 'nid player, has stopped playing me at all b/c he's scared of my Typhoons. The only way he'll play is if I don't field them... typical 'nid player (no offense meant to any of you here who may play them ). :P

I can imagine the typhoons would have a similar effect on orks. If you're dead set on the pred/ww, I'd say go with the whirlwinds; even better if you can find the points for two! Nothing quite like two pie-plate barrages to thin out the masses! :tu:

Im going to plumb for the whirlwind - while there are lots of options out there that are really useful against hordes, the whirlwind is just frightening with its ability to ignore cover and pin units - a pair of them will cost you just 170 points and will be the death of most horde players - pinning is almost as important as damage with low leadership armies, and the ability to take on units like eldar scouts is also fantastic. Sooo cheap for what they can achieve.
