Things I wish I had done when I first built my Great Company

This thread is dedicated to helping out newcomers to the Fang by showing them mistakes that we have made while first building our Great Companies. So here we go...

Wish I bought more Tactical Marine box sets.

This one really seemed to slap me on the back of the head when I first realized that

1) a 50/50 Tac Marine to Space Wolf mix makes for great Grey Hunters and Blood Claws

2) gives you plenty of extra Missile Launchers for your Long Fangs pack

3) gives access to Flamers

Wish I had playtested unique characters before buying them.

My current HQ count is nine. Logan Grimnar; Bjorn the Fell-handed; Njal Stormcaller; a Wolf Lord; 2 Rune Priests; 2 Wolf Priests; & a Wolf Guard Battle Leader(which won't be finished until I get a Thunderwolf Model). Out of all of these the ones I use the most are the Rune Priests, one of the Wolf Priests and Bjorn. Logan has only come out once same for the other Wolf Lord, Njal comes out every now and again.

I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with those HQ choices, just that they don't fit very well in my list so now I have a few (expensive) models that don't really get played much.

So post your mistakes be they modelling, tactical or whatever. Lets help these young pups out!

Not buying any Rhino kits - buying Razorbacks/Whirlwinds and leaving the hatch for swapping.

Glueing Land Speeder to its flying base. :)

Okay the Rhino thing I completely agree with, but what's the bit about the flight base?

See, and I have the opposite problem- not having bought Razorback kits, and getting my first whirlwind second hand. *hatch glued on*.

I havent bought a tactical box in six years- Ive had plenty of other marines to kitbash bits, and at the time there wasnt a huge surplus of wolfy bits to be had.

I wish I had gotten my Logan back when he was only 12 bucks and easy to find.

I would enjoy having gotten landspeeders more, if Id gotten more typhoons and less MM/HF.

I cant really regret it- they served me well, but I now have three attack bikes, and squat to do with two of them.

Not planning my GH builds out before I made a GH pack.

Of 10 GH kit, plan to add 2 from a different kit for 12.

What I suggest.

3 Special Weapons. 2 of the same and 1 flammer such as Melta, Melta, Flammer

1 Power Weapon or Power Fist, I suggest PW.

1 with a PP

1 created for a unique MotW model

1 with a Wolf Standard this can be added to any of the above if you wish to conserve generic builds

5 Normal GH builds. g

Doing this will give you the flexability of being able to givie your GH pack their unique pack markings while still having every option a GH pack can have.

Same here - wish I would not have done it. Actually, I swore not to buy any second hand staff from e-bay anymore, when fixing "cheap" land raider costed me about the same amount as buying a new one.

If that thing brakes down during transportation, You are pretty screwed up. Better to leave the hole open and insert the stand before each battle. But I did not do this mistake with my wolves at least - after having similar experience with "army case opening suprises" with bits of Pegasus Knights and Warhawk Riders :P

Also about carrying tips - the Pringles boxes are good for all types of walkers - Sentinels, dreads etc.

My biggest mistake was when I started.Got 2 Space wolves packs and I just started building them up without even thinking of or looking at the codex.Later on I had to rip more than half the guys apart and change them.I felt so stupid :)

But now when ever I build or paint models I look at the codex first.

Building one of my PA Wolf Guard and Thunderwolf Lord stoned. I later realized I'd put a modeled shoulderpad on the left side(where the Great Company insignia should be) and decided that I hated the way the Thunderhammer looked like it was resting on my Lord's shoulder.

definatley buying a pack of Wolf Guard Termies and just fitting them up without looking at the codex

i basically just chose what looked coolest and ended up with a hodge podge of mix match weaponry

needless to say i slapped myself rather hard when my codex arrived....

Looking back now, I wish I had gone for the 50/50 blend of tactical and Space Wolf models.

Wish I had purchased forgeworld extra armour before I had glued my rhinos together.

I should have trimmed the models better then I did when taking them off the sprue, but there was

just so many, now when I find a piece I am likely to glue it on and realise that it has too much flash

on it still.

I wish I had spent more time working out how to magnetise my long fangs. I just made myself a lot

more work when it comes around to painting them.

I should have purchased the Chaos Marauder horsemen heads before starting to build. Over 3-4 squads

of Grey Hunters and 2 Squads of Blood Claws I wanted them to be as unique as I could.

I at least remembered to leave 4 Grey Hunters and 4 Blood Claws from each pack along to be magnetised.

And all my Wolf Guard (TDA and PA) and Thunderwolves for that matter.

I would like to be able to sell all my stuff for the price that I paid, so I can start again with what I and

others on this thread know and have pointed out.

I later realized I'd put a modeled shoulderpad on the left side(where the Great Company insignia should be)

its your great company mark your packs how you like it , there is no smurffy tale(codex astartes) which tells us how to mark our packs

BTT

learn how to paint ... repainting of 10000 Point takes endless -.-

think about how to kit your packs, or magnetise them

LISTEN TO OLDER/MORE EXPIERENCED PLAYERS, they mostly know what they talking about

Not buying any Rhino kits - buying Razorbacks/Whirlwinds and leaving the hatch for swapping.

I'm confused so are you saying buy rhinos or not buy rhinos? I was gonna buy razorbacks and magnetize them. (thought it was bassically a rhino + upgrade sprue)

My lesson: no matter how many ziploc bags you use or how organized you are, leave the peices on the sprue until the moment you need them. I lost the sides of my land speeder this way...

When I first started playing (many moons ago) I just bought whatever I thought looked good. Always ended up having to buy more stuff because I wouldnt use most of the stuff I bought the first time. So now I always write out a 1750 list and buy that first. If I want to add stuff on now it's no big deal.

I think he meant he wished he hadn't bought the Rhino's, but Razorback's instead.

ok just double checking.

oh heres another good one I thought of last night:

Figure out what color paints your going to ACTUALLY use before buying a bunch. Here's a hint: its usually less then you think it will be.

I REALLY agree with the bit about not gluing flying models bases on, i glued my three Deffkopptas on to their bases and got them to my local store to open the box and see they'd all broken off and i'd forgot my glue. Needless to say three orks could seem to get their koptas of the ground. Magnetizing is awesome but i have the problem of not knowing where to get magnets since i can't order them off line (no magic plastic card). and to all the people that got their space wolves and just started building the coolest looking models they could: I KNOW!!! its just sooooo easy since we usually get so many options and we (in my opinion) have the absolutely coolest looking models in the game. my first space wolves box set ended just this way, so they became my very cool (and super expensive) wolf guard that i rarely use.

also only use plastic glue on models you are 100% sure are perfect the way they are! that stuff like welds the plastic together and broke the eldar i had used it on when i tried to remove something.

2 words

1) USE

2) MAGNETS

I find my self using magnets more and more, thunderwolf mount Wolflord, has a torso magnet so i can swap with a Ironpriest and both his arms are magnetized, the rune priest has a set of legs that are magnetized so i can use them for the lord and for my Ironpriest,

I use 4 or 5 mm for torso, 3 mm for arm and 2 mm for weaopons, so now my WG with thunderhammer that goes with my scouts can have a BP, PP or Comby melta

All i can say, I LOVE MAGNETS

I never use it now..plastic glue that is. You will snap an arm in half before that bolt pistol comes loose. I use loctite control, it comes out 1 drop at a time and only glues your fingers together 33% of the time.
