Money to Spend

Recommended Posts

I have 1000pts space wolves, which consists of 10 grey Hunters, 10 Blood Claws, Canis, Njal, 5 Wolf Scouts and a drop pod. I want to get some more models. I was planning on getting the battleforce and a pack of devastators, with 5 mr dandy thunderwolves and also a rhino apc. This would give me in total with my current units:

Njal, Canis, 5 TWC, 20 Grey hunters, 5 Long Fangs,10 Blood claws, 10 Wolf Scouts, 2 Drop Pods and a Rhino Apc.

Any ideas on whether i should get the models i listed or get something new?

Looks good to me.

In the future, I'd suggest :

1. A pack of at least 10 fenrisian wolves, which Canis can join. Canis isn't immune to "Instant Death", so the extra furry bodies will soak up incoming fire.

2. More wolf guard to lead your packs. Arm them with a power fist and a combi-melta.

3. Dreadnoughts and speeders would also be some things to think about in the future.

Mech is easier to play than Pod, in my experience.

As WH47 said, get the Razorback over the Rhino. You will be glad for the choices it gives.

As MO said, Fen Wolves are good. Dire wolves, Chaos Hounds and Goblin wolves are all good choices. Goblin wolves require less 'modelling' to look good, so if you are a green modeller, I would go with them :)

Darkseer has this quality blog here; Space Wolf Grey, which might help for choices.

Remember to magnetise Predators sponsons to get the most choices for your dollars.

Vindicators are great.

Whirlwinds can be used as Rhinos - don't glue the turret down!

The WG Terminator box is excellent. They have a different set of movement to the Vanilla ones. If you buy both, you can combine the parts for even more unique SW, always good.

Khorne Berzerkers and Assault Marines have a great range of running legs and chain weapons. Magnetise Jump Packs so you can use your guys as Sky claws as well as BC/GH.

Dreadnoughts are good because you can pull the arms off and use them as Gun Dreads or Regular Dreads. I am not sure how The Fang feels about the Ven. Dread kit, but you don't have to use them as Ven. Dreads :)

This. Rhinos/RBs are something you'll need more than one of (inho) Pods are awesome but not even close to an every-list item.

Just my thoughts...

Drop the Blood Claws and add some more Grey Hunters.

I do not see why Canis should join fenrisan wolves... He is only Ld 8 and with FW he is going to be taking a lot of morale checks.

So either have a lord (or 2) on TWC joining Canis and some FW or a Lord and Canis join some TWC.

Then they get Ld 10 :)

And do not foeget to magnatize the TWC either.

And I agree with the others that rhinos instead of Pods. (Maybe 1 pod and 2 Rhinos/Razorbacks)

I try to bring in my Long Fangs in Razorbacks whenever possible. With one exception which is composed of three HB, 1 Multi Melta, and a ML (didnt have another MM :) ) that I try to drop pod in whenever possible. Add a pack leader with a plasma pistol and power fist for added fun and they make a big dent, but tend to die quick as I dont have another DP to insert some Grey Hunters with em. If I did they could run interference and just raise twice the hell.

When I do bring in my Blood Claws its with a Crusader, occasionally a Wolf Priest or Wolf Guard along for the ride.

I do have an old Land Raider with Lascannon Sponsons that I like to haul a Grey Hunter squad around in, then dismount them where the enemy really wouldnt like to see em and let the fur fly!!!

Um where do i find these magnets that can be bought? also i live in england

Any decent hobby shop should have them. I'd imagine, since you're in England, that any GW shop has them. They usually come in sets of somewhere around 30 magnets (at least the LGS where I got mine did) for around $10 US. They're one of the best investments you can make in 40k.

Hope you can find some!

Rare Earth magnets are the ones I use. You'll have to google and find the nearest stockest/get them posted to you, or get the ones at your GW if they sell them.

I would shop around.

I personally have mobs of slogging BCs. They do quite well tying up sections of the opposing force. I don't prefer crusaders for them, as it comes to a lot of points.

Maybe adding Canis to a wolf pack wasn't a good idea after all, though wouldn't TWLs and TWC be quite expensive? With such models you wouldn't want Canis anymore

I use: http://www.powermagnetstore.com/

They are extremely cheap. Disc magnets size 3X1 mm are £0.08 a piece. :P

I used to run this too. But after doing some math the GH's are just plain better IMO.

I run a TWL with TWC. It is very expensive, but so far they have crushed everything and been an extreem bullet magnet, so the rest of my army has usually been nearly unharmed at the end of battle.

Canis I mostly use for fun, but then he is joining a TWL and some Fenrisan Wolves. (Also Canis is an expensive model money wise)

I tend to approach my armies from the painting angle. The new venerable dreadnaughts are actually priced lower (in US dollars, not sure about GBP) than regular dreadnaughts, and they are beautiful models. I'm planning on picking one up after the holiday weekend.

I'd go for a battleforce, termies, razorback, whirlwind, vindicator and definitely go for the magnets to get the most out of the vehicles (and Wolf Guard, dreads, skyclaws and so on...). Kinda hard to go wrong really but more Grey Hunters and transports will almost always form the core of your force.

Good to remember that whirlwind/razorback/chaos vindicator is just a rhino with a bunch of cool stuff added so pretty much always the better buy. Great bits for static defenses, scenery, or even making a vehicle out of!

*Edit* Long Fangs needed as well. Can't remember if the old box is still around; if not the space marine box is fine given all the wolfiness in a battleforce

3x1mm N50 discs work well for power armour arms/shoulders. Haven't tried it on termie armoured guys or jump packs yet but it won't be a problem - they are pretty darned strong. High 'N' values are good btw.

I haven't got around to magnetising vehicles yet either so I'll leave that for someone else to comment.

Regarding magnets for models and vehicles I go for:

Models arms:

1@ 3*1mm and 1@ 3X2mm (The extra thikness really makes a difference)

I have the big one drilled just half way in the torso and the little magnet drilled into the shoulder.

This makes it stronger as the arm is held up by both the magnes power and the fact that it is waying down on it.

Eksampel:

Drill 2mm into shoulder

Crill 1mm into torso

Glue 2mm magnet into torso

Glue 1mm magnet into shoulder

And remember to check polls before gluing

For Vehicles:

If you can get the magnets on the inside 1@ 6X3 mm and 1@ 6X1 mm on the outside (Used for dozer blade)

I have not tried much else for vehicles though.
