Brother Caleb
I'm working on some fluff more my DIY chapter's Master. I was wondering if he could have done a few tours in the Deathwatch and returned to the Spectral Guard and eventually taken command. How does service with the DW work with reference to time served? Brother Tyler
Service with the Deathwatch tends to be temporary. You'll find out a lot more about the Deathwatch when Fantasy Flight Games publishes the RPG. Jarl Bloodwolf
Based off of the books and such a marines service period is temporary, usually just long enough to complete the task they were seconded for. But if a marine proves himself repeatidly in the service of the DW he may be perminantly seconded Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/205352-deathwatch-service/#findComment-2449412 Share on other sites
Brother Argent
An example of this is Cyrus from the DoW2 Series ( I dont believe I'm referencing that as a soure for fluff). Cyrus has done several tours with the Deathwatch and is back serving his Chapter. Death Watch veterans often keep their silver shoulder pad and arm in recognition of their servce, and many still keep their special issue ammunition. At least that is as far as I know. Darkchild130
I cant remember where i read it but some piece of fluff indicated that there is no fixed term of service, so a marine could serve for a year or a hundred years. Gold Raven
I got the impression from Warrior Coven that Deathwatch Marines were put together on an as-needed basis. So one particular Marine with one particular specialty might get called in once or twice in their entire lifetime, while another might spend centuries fulfilling missions. It could also depend on the fickle interests of the Ordo Xenos Inquisitors themselves. Individual Deathwatch members may fall in or out of favor with one inquisitor or another, depending on how they fulfill their given missions. Reclusiarch Darius
Yeah it is a pretty open area. I mean, there are established characters (such as Brother-Captain Artemis) who get permanently seconded, simply because they're so good at what they do. I'd imagine that the OX would probably only permanently second a handful of those that serve, and most likely those of Watch-Captain/Librarian rank (as with any military force, good officers are hard to find). Most of the Deathwatch are only temporarily seconded though, as their service can be thought of as a trade for closer relations with the Inquisition (so their Chapter expects them returned after they've completed whatever tasks the Inquisitor needed them for). The Inquisition gets the best infantry in the entire Imperium (even better than their Stormtrooper regiments), the Chapter affirms their alliance with the Ordo Xenos and gets back veteran warriors whose skills and experience can benefit the entire Chapter. Lady_Mournival
The impression I got, was that it was until their commanding inquisitor decided to release them, but that's just from that short story in Heroes of the Space Marines. In general I think it would probably be a couple of missions or perhaps just a campaign and then back unless the Inquisition or the marine requested that he stay.
