chapter master 454
Ok, melta me if I ain't allowed but this is more for my necrons than anything but I think since it's just about the base and not them I hope it's ok. I am thinking about doing an obsidian effect for bases and while I can imagine it, I just can't get it to flow onto my bases in any form or manner I can think of. It's more that 'I know what obsidian looks but yet I don't' sort of moment and it's starting to get to me (because those bases are looking at me in the more provokative right now!). I know greys will be needing used however I'm trying to think of which technique would do it best (because my necrons have actually now become grounds for what is now 2-3 technique practices: drybrushing, washes and I was think about ether going with stipling or blending). My mind is quite confuzzed right now about it so any help would be nice (howver if I get the melta I won't really get too bother about it). Terminatorinhell
Maybe you can take some of the chunkier slate from the basing kit, prime it black, LIGHT brushing of black w/ codex grey, then cover with ard coat for the shine? SquigBait
Obsidian as you should know is volcanic glass. The volcanic glass is classically black, however there are natural variations that include a rusty blood red and even clear green depending on the exact chemical makeup of the volcanic glass in question. Raw, it appears a dark grey. Anywhere that a fracture is or a hot spot would be extremely glossy black. The best way to do this is to actually start with a flat black and then hit it with wet effect to give the appropriate deep gloss. njm3
Can use water effects, just mix in something to color it black. Other two part translucent epoxies can work too. If you want shards of obsidian on the base, just use chunks of translucent plastic or glass.
