NovaScotius
Hey all, I'm assembling my first Rhino for my Wolves, and something odd just struck me... What do you paint on the gunner's shoulder pads? Obviously one side is the Great Company symbol (In my case it's the Great Wolf's symbol), and on the other side I would normally paint the pack markings... But I'm not sure if vehicle drivers and gunners have packs per se... I was initially tempted to do his pack markings the same as the squad the vehicle is dedicated to, but I don't think that makes much sense - My understanding of a pack is that they live, fight and die together - What Space Wolf is going to want to sit in a driver's seat of a Rhino while his pack-mates are fighting and dying just outside of his metal box? Therefore are vehicle drivers 'packless', or are they part of a pack exclusively made up of vehicle drivers and gunners? These 'transport packs' (for want of a better term) would then split up, crewing several vehicles for each engagement. As you can tell, I'm a little lost here... could anyone shed any light on this? What do you guys normally do? Thanks! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/205653-vehicle-drivergunner-shoulder-pads/ Share on other sites
stinkenheim
For my army, I have painted all the pred/vind/whirlwind gunners as long fangs all with the same markings. Land speeders would get Grey Hunter markings (as i remember reading somewhere that GHs pilot the thawks and most of the vehicles) For my lords land raider it will be a WG For rhinos paint them as whatever squad they are transporting as from reading the IA books it appears that one of the squad actually mans the pintle mounted weapon, so there is only a dedicated driver to a rhino the 'gunner' is just whatever squad is aboard. When they aren't mounted it is remote controlled by either th driver or the machine spirit. CainTheHunter
Well, I paint them the same way as the squad, which is inside, is painted. Reason for that is because he IMO is not constantly sitting in a Rhino, driving and shooting - he's just one of those pack members, who has popped out of the hatch to grab that storm-bolter :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/205653-vehicle-drivergunner-shoulder-pads/#findComment-2453387 Share on other sites
hendrik
could be just me but i believe it once got mentioned that rhinos etc are driven by almost wiped out packs. i'm not talking about the lone wolves(+ we didn't have those before). take for instance a pack that sees so much action that only 4 of them survive it. they aren't experienced enough to make it into the long fangs nor have their deeds been this great to be promoted to the wolf guard.these then become trained in the use of rhinos etc Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/205653-vehicle-drivergunner-shoulder-pads/#findComment-2453436 Share on other sites
Slipp
My view point comes from the way I use my rhinos, they are part of the pack trusted with the most important task. The rhino crew serve to cut the lines of reinforcements by driving to block the shortest route to join the combat, or to provide cover or block line of site after their brothers blow past their targets. In short my wolves see crewing a rhino as a great honour and responsibility. Maximus-92
I saw some pics of phil kelly's army in another topicand the gunner for one of the rhinos was a long fang with a hand held (not mounted) storm bolter, looked pretty cool Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/205653-vehicle-drivergunner-shoulder-pads/#findComment-2453805 Share on other sites

MaleOpener
There is nothing printed in the codex which states otherwise, so go with what you feel as best. My "vehicles" are painted in the smae way as the pack its attached to. I even use parts from the SW box to make the gunner look like a member of the pack. Speeders and dreads have their own pack markings.
