Counts-As Dante

Here's where we're at today. I'm pretty tired (switching between night and day shifts at work will do that to you) so only got a little done today - the green laurels on the chest/shoulder pad, along with the eyes. I've also painted all the gems/gem holders in brazen brass. Will lighten these with gold next and then paint the gems themselves. Not sure what colour to do them, though. Red will be lost amongst the armour, I would think? Open to suggestions on that one.

Oh and how did you attatch those wings

Badly. ;)

In all seriousness, this is the weak part of the conversion. Basically I just clipped the taps from them and wedged them between the jump pack and the shoulder pads. I have a rear-view shot (pre-paint) of what it looks like from behind so you can see what I mean.

As you can see, it's not perfect. I'm sure someone could come up with a better way of doing it, but it looks okay enough I guess.

Haven't you seen "The Incredibles"? It's not a good idea to wear a cape when you're using a jump pack. In all seriousness, though, the model looks great - excellent conversion.

Rub is where the oils on your fingers rub the paint off of the modle while you're holding it and painting other spots.

There is an easy way to avoid that though, a painter buddy showed me a little trick back in '93 or so that works great:

1. Take a bottle of rubber cement: http://content.etilize.com/Large/1012683524.jpg,

2. Then stick a chunk of Blu-Tack on the lid: http://www.mayfairstationers.co.uk/images/products/BKBTHPJH.jpg,

3. Then jam the base of the model that you are painting into the Blu-Tack.

Just hold the bottle (instead of the model) in your off-hand when painting; the thick rubber cement helps provide a nice stable platform for you to hold and for your model to rest on. You can turn the model in any direction/orientation and it won't fall off - so you can even hold it upside down to paint the underside of weapons, arms, etc. It'll also prevent you from ever experiencing the "Rub" problem.

Haven't had much free time the past week or so, but I managed to get a little further. The armour and everything on it is now completely finished, and I've moved on to the weapons. Once those are done, the last few things (cloak, jump pack, wings) are pretty quick and easy to do so it won't take much more work beyond this stage. Hopefully!

Almost finished the axe now. Just need to decide what colour to use for the handle/shaft. I'm thinking a muted brown but haven't made a final decision on that yet.

  • 2 weeks later...

Been a while since I updated this, various commitments and a general lack of time have stopped me doing much until the last day or so. Anyway, getting close to finishing now. Just got to tidy up a few errant flicks of paint (which you can't really see in this picture) and then do the base.

This really is the best counts as Dante I have ever seen.. really great Sanguinius model!

How on earth does that look like sanguinius?

Nice model though, my only nit pick is the wings being fehtered but still joined to a power pack. I think astoraths wings would have fitted better IMO

It's based on an alternative interpretation of Sanguinius, the picture I posted in the first page of the thread.

And here we go, I think it's finally finished at last. Whew! I decided to keep the base fairly simple, although this is the first time I've had a go using static grass. Think it turned out okay.

seriously though that is awesome, although i'm guessing you got inspiration from this

Well, seeing as I already posted that picture earlier on in the thread... ;)

Edit: My bad, I was getting confused with my 40KO thread with the same work. Seems I only posted the artwork on that one, and not this. My apologies.

Your Dante almost makes me want to throw mine in the bin and start again :/ lol.

Seriously nice conversion and paint job! Really love your red recipy bud. Really nice colour. If I wasn't as far along with my own BA's, I'd switch to your recipy. Which brings me to, I never in a million years of painting Dante red. But he definitly suits it.

One question. How did you achive the gold on the axe and detailing?

Again very awesome job. Looking forward to seeing him finished and more in the future :P

CTK

Edit- My bad, didn't page two, lol. Very nice figure. ;)

I'll stick up a few more pictures tomorrow (when I have some natural light to work with), from different angles and such. I've also touched up the kneepads as the layering had gone somewhat amiss there.

As for the gold, that was one of the easiest bits. Mithril Silver, followed by two washes of Gryphonne Sepia. That's it. Nothing clever or fancy, but it just works.

I've already got my next 'project' lined up and almost ready to go. Just waiting for a shoulder pad and backpack bitz to arrive in the next day or two...
