Using Vallejo Model Color Reds

Recommended Posts

I was thinking of trying out the vallejo model color reds. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on the colors they use in that range of paints. Shading the red is something that is hard for me. The Citadel and P# paints don't really have a good "dark red" IMHO. In general I have seen most people highlight up to orange... but I was hoping for some darker tones. Going from a very dark red to a vibrate red as the highlight.

If anyone has a shade, base coat, and highlight combo in vallejo model color range can you please share your suggestions and maybe some pics if you have?

Thanks!!!

I go with the model colour flat red, then main colour of the game colour blood red, then use a light glaze of dark fleshtone...and use either oranges or dwarf flesh. The dark flesh tone gives a good shadow(y) base to the figure with out going with a black, and since the dark flesh tone has red in it, it really helps it feel more like a shadow.

Hopefully that helps you man!

It doesn't matter if the glazes are gloss or semi-gloss you can just hit the model with a dull coat afterwards. Although game color is great I find the colors, like citadel paint, so bright. I was wondering about model colors because I find them more realistic....... Maybe I should look over the game colors again.

The combos with model color that I have seen on the net are:

Burnt Cadium (shade), Cavalry Brown, Flat Red, Vermillion (Highlight)

and

Hull Red (shade), Red, Scarlet (Highlight)

I have never tried these combos and wanted to know if they were worth trying. Thanks for the suggestions though.

i use vallejo model colour on my blood angels and like the results i get.. (others might not, but ive not had any complaints)

the method i use is one i got off here but with my own twist.. its the standard red highlighted with orange that most people are doing some variant of, but with a glaze of burnt cadmium red afterwards to darken the armour down.

full method is - black primer, mechrite red, few layers of vallejo flat red, wash with red ink, wash german camo black brown into the recesses, highlight with bright orange then medium flesh, glaze burnt cadmium over the top afterwards to darken down, then dullcoat.

as an example of burnt cadmium used as the primary armour colour..

seth so far = glazes of burnt cadmium for what seems like an eternity, shaded with a mix of burnt cadmium and black glazed over the bottom parts, and a mix of burnt cad mixed with basic skintone glazed for the highlights.. then almost pure skintone (little bit of burnt cad) for the "proper" highlights.

its best to play around with various methods, and i recommend picking up vallejo paints even if its just a few to try out a different brand..
