Ozybonza
So I'm a mid-level painter who's done a few armies but I have very limited experience with painting red. I've got my first squad of DC that I'll be painting up as regular assault marines and I'd like some advice as to how I should paint the red. I want it to look good without having to do too many levels of shading/highliting, partially because I'm lazy, partially because I'll probably screw it up anyway. Keep in mind I only have easy access to GW paints. So I've currently got two methods in mind; First method: UC white, do recesses in black, paint the whole mini blood red, highlight in fiery orange or a mix thereof. Possilby follow with a Baal red wash - haven't decided yet. Second method: UC black, paint armour Mecherite Red (leaving recesses black), paint most of the Mecherite bits in blood red (leaving the lowest bits), highlight fiery orange or a mix thereof. So I ask - which of these methods would be better? Do either of them need adjustment? Should I forget these entirely and do something else? njm3
I have been black undercoating, blood red spray, then red ink for some depth to the red and still relatively fast. One issue is that GW no longer sells two of those products :D I've decided to try Armypainter red spray, which lets you skip the white/black undercoating. Don't have any idea the depth it gives the red though (as in blood red spray used to be super-flat and lifeless, hence the ink wash). Do you want a "so bright it burns your eyes" BA army? Undercoat white. "Deep and moody" red? Undercoat black. Other than that, either method should work. http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/...jsp?aId=2500038 is the official current GW line on BA painting, but i think the dark flesh wash kinda muddies the red. see also: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...=196278&hl= http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...=194049&hl= http://fromthewarp.blogspot.com/2010/04/bl...-paint-red.html http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...showarticle=
Red Fury
Go with the first method but ditch the "do recesses in black" step. It never turns out looking right and if you really want black recesses then go with method 2 instead. Do this instead: -primer white -blood red base coat -Sepia wash -highlight blazing orange -extreme highlight fiery orange (available in vallejo game colors still) -Baal red wash -touch up select highlights done http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll275/RedFury77/40k/P1040828.jpg I swear they look more red than that. I'll have to take good pics one of these days... -Fury edited with a better pic, slightly better anyway...
Ozybonza
Thanks for all the help guys. I probably wanna go for a slightly darker red than the pic above, so I might go with the black undercoat. I really shouldn't have bought that white spray on the weekend!
Morollan
If you look at the pics in the codex, even GW can't seem to make their Blood Angels look consistently the same shade of red. That's why I don't try either (or that's my excuse). Annoyingly, I have 5 very old marines (the first metal ones that were released at the same time as the plastic beaky box set) that are, what I consider to be, the perfect BA red. Can I remember how I did them? Can I ;) !
