Heroes of the Flesh tearers

In the new Blood Angels codex many of the most interesting HQ choises are named characters. Characters are also quite interesting to paint and build. And just a single model can really change the way an army plays. So, I decided to make a Flesh tearer version of each named character in the codex to use in my army. It is a long term project, but hopefully I will be able to add new characters to this thread as I complete them.

The first character is of course the Chapter master Gabriel Seth. Allthough the official model is OK I have set a "rule" for myself that I may not use any metal parts (or any parts that are not plastic or green stuff) in my FT army. So I had to make my own version. I tried to keep it quite close to the original, but I changed a few things.

I thought long about whether to model the face after the old illustration (with hair and a metal plate) or the new version (bald). In the end I used the newer version as I guessed that would be more recognisable as Seth. It's also the current version of how he is supposed to look.

From the beginning I had ideas of having lots of spikes and blades on the model. I tested blades on the lower arms, feet and knees at different times during the building of the model but removed them all as they made the model look too busy or too chaotic.

I changed Seth's personal iconography the the Chapter symbol. I figured that if you are the chapter master you are the Chapter personified and have no need for personal markings. The Chapter's markings are your markings.

The original Blood reaver (the weapon) looked a little boring, like it could be one of many eviscerators. I wanted my version to look like a one-off relic. To get the feeling I made it much more non-symetrical. And I'm happy with the results. I also didn't make a name scroll on it. It wouldn't really work with the weathering and gore I applied to it.

I had the idea that the cape would be something given to all Chapter masters of the Blood angel successors in the Second founding. There is no background supporting that idea, but I thought it would be cool. Therefore I painted it without any Flesh tearer-specific symbols, but rather stuff that could be used by all BA successors. And the three blood drops with wings could be interpreted as the smaller drops (successors) breaking of from the larger one (BA).

This shoulder pad I tried to get as close as possible to the original.

The Iron halo in the shape of a Buzzsaw blade with a blood drop in the middle was something I've been wanting to try for a long time. And Seth seemed like the perfect character to try it on. The actual Chapter symbol protecting its master.

The eyes look a little strange on this picture as they are meant to look good when seeing the model from a normal gaming angle.

So, what do you think?

Amazing. Just amazing. Better than 'Eavy Metal in my opinion, and by a fair margin. I actually feel kind of bad when I see models like this because I know that I will never be able to paint that well. By the way, what does the cloak say? Frater Sanguinatus _____ so Brothers of Blood and what's the third word?

Thank you!

@Rain: Originally, it was just supposed to say "Frater Sanguinatus". However, when I started writing it, I soon realised I could fit one more word onto it (allthough it would not be visible because of the way the cloak folds). The visible letters are an "I" and part of a "m". It's supposed to say "Imperialis" or possibly "Imperatus". I figured that after the Heresy. the surviving loyalists really wanted to show that they were loyal to the Imperium. The translation would be something along the lines of "Blood Brothers of the Imperium", suggesting that the successor chapters were bound together not only by their blood but also by their loyalty to the Imperium. And that they were bound to the Imperium through their blood.

@Isiah: When I start a new project I often find quite a lot of inspiration. Especially on a project like this, when I just add the models I like to paint or play with to an existing army.

Another character finished. Allthough it is not a named character, it is still a hero of the Flesh tearer chapter.

A terminator librarian.

The model is the Space hulk one with a few minor conversions. The biggest one is the force weapon. The axe head on the original looked good, but the way he held it just looked stupid to me. Way would he hold up the flat side to the enemy? So I decided to make it into a force staff instead. A staff enhances the image of warrior mystics and looks quite cool if done right.

I thought a bit about colours on this one. The Blood Angels follow Codex Astartes when it comes to librarians, meaning blue armour. I havn't found anything about Flesj tearer librarians, so I assumed they would be the same as BA ones. The Eavy metal version of this model features a red tabard. I thought about doing somethin similar to tie it in with the rest of the army. However, I never really liked the way it looked on the "official" model and I don't think I could have done it any better. I just don't think a red tabard looks good. So I went totally Codex Astartes and used a yellow one.

I really like it! The yellow is great too. Where did you get that base? It's awesome.

Thank you. Most of the base (the stair) is part of the original model. I simply mounted it on a 40 mm round base and added some pieces of plasticard around it.

Sorry for the lack of updates. I've been painting regular squads and then been out of town. But now another named character is complete. So I present to you...

High Executioner Virgil Caine (counts as Dante)

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h233/Bulonicus/FT/dante02.jpg

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h233/Bulonicus/FT/dante03.jpg

When I started working on this one I wanted to really make sure that it was recognisable as Dante. Not a captain and not a sanguinary guard, but Dante. So when constructing it, I tried to stay as close to the look of the original model as possible. The only thing I wanted to change was to add more movement. Most of Dante's special abilities (I6, A4, Hit and run, does not scatter) suggests agility. So a quite static pose like the original seemed wrong. So I tried to stay close to the original pose but add some more movement. To make sure it looked like Dante I used a regular jump pack insted of a sanguinary guard one and a hand held inferno pistol instead of a wristmounted one. I also converted the death mask to look more like Dante's.

Painting this model was a big "leap of faith" for me. Normally when painting my Flesh tearers I just paint them like the rest of my army. Allthough it takes some concentration, I know how to do it and have quite a lot of experience in doing it after painting a whole army. With Dante I realised I had to paint him gold to separate him from a normal captain. And painting gold on a whole model is very different from painting gold on small details. On my sanguinary guards, I could get away with a simple gold technique as most of them were painted in my standard colours. Dante would not only be totally different from the rest of the army, but quite the opposite of the rest of the army. I needed to paint a shining gold armour that was still dark and "realistic". I had an idea of how it could be done but I had never tested it before. And after the first layer it didn't look that good. But I continued and in the end it actually turned out better then I had hoped for. It really reacts well to light (which is kind of hard to capture in a photo). And I also think I managed to capture the darkness and worn look of the rest of the army.

So, what do you think?

I really like your 'counts as' Dante. He definately looks more agile than the existing Dante mini does. The worn effect on the gold armour looks really good and I love the scorching around the jump pack nozzles. I think he'll fit in well with, yet stand out enough from your existing mini's :).

thanks

James

The Dante-model looks fantastic. You've totally captured the feel of the original model.

I really like the simple conversion of the axe. The shortened handle makes it look perfect, same with the shaved blade.

If I ever make a Dante model of my own, I will look at your example very closely first! :P

EDIT: w00t just saw the termie libby. Awesome! I have the same model on my desk and I also don't like the original axe. You have solved that problem for me. :)

Thank you!

The scorching on the jump pack is made by first painting watered down Tin bitz over the lower half/third of the exhausts, building up more and more colour the further down you get. The lower part is then drybrushed black. It works quite good on all manner of metal colours.

Another update. This time it is two librarians.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h233/Bulonicus/FT/libs.jpg

I used the same colours as the terminator librarian. So they are codex astartes. The blue tends to look a little rough in the pictures but I think it looks better in reality.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h233/Bulonicus/FT/lib1-1.jpg

The one without jump pack. The banner helped me to add a little red and black to tie him in with the rest of the army. Since he looked quite calm and as if he was waiting for the enemy rather then casting a psychic power or charging into battle I did not paint the classic "psyker eyes" on him.

The "librarian shoulder pad". The horned skull is sculpted in green stuff.

The one with jump pack. And psyker eye!

Details of the jump pack, force staff and shoulder pad.
