Imperial Fists Land raider Mk 2a

Recommended Posts

One of the many projects I've had floating around my mind for the past year was to build a MK2b Land raider similar to the forgeworld one to add to my Imperial Fists. I got ahold of a crusader/redeemer set, some plasticard, tubing and a few bits and set to it. It became apparant early on that it wouldn't exactly resemble the Mk2b so I decided to call it a Mk2a, a slightly earlier version of the 2b. Just need to smooth of some GS work, add some bottom pipesd to the smokestacks then give it another coat of white and it should be good to go from there. (will add the tracks last) I thought Wrath of Dorn may be a good name for her. Comments and crits appreciated.

Parts:

Majority = LR redeemer/crusader

Lascannons/bolters/hatch = IG kits

Eagle = Apoc sprue

IF symbols = tanks upgrade set

TUbing for main sponsons/engines

Plasticard for sides/top cowling

Aren't the side sponsons too big?

Hi folks, cheers for the replies. In answer to the side sponsons size, yes they are slightly wider than the track guards are wheareas the FW version are slightly narrower. (~27mm Vs ~23mm) Main reason for that is to fit the tubing I had available - I tried to keep the costs to a minimum as when the cost goes up it gets harder to justify making one over buying the FW version. In fact tho, the difference in the sponsons was the first thing I knew would be apparant during the early stages and prompted me naming it as a Mk2a - an earlier version before the design was compacted. It's also worth noting that the FW version uses rhino doors whereas mine uses LR doors.

I like the big sponsons. Gives the impression that the doors are still functional and the marines can assault through them whilst their brother still fires the weapons.

Yeah, I'm going to throw my oar in and say that I love the massive sponsons, too. That's the sort of tank you can use to sight, kill and cook a knarloc all at once.

The only thing that bugs me is the smooth cylindrical... things covering the lascannon bases. They don't look Imperial ie blocky and covered in obscure wiring and gadgets.

Other than that, I love the model. It saddens me that I don't have any of those old-school boxy tanks.

Keep up the good work!

Od.

Cheers Od. FWs interpretation of the LR Mk2b really reminds me of WW2 era tanks. Not sure if it's appropriate for SMs (would fit very nicely with IG tho) as they generally sport more sophisticated looking equipment. The cylindrical parts were a copy from the FW version. I may add some purity seals/scrollwork to them in order to break the monotony - cheers for pointing it out.

UPDATE!

I may not get a chance to finish it to the extent I wanted this weekend so for now here's an update. Most base colours added so really justneed to finish the fist logos on the sides, skulls, engine, front window and lights. Then can start with shading and highlighting to make it look as if it's actually pre-heresy and not straight off the factory floor!

I like how you placed the doors on the sponsons. For some reason it just looks cool.

From the pics it looks like the paint is very smooth. Did you use an airbrush or did us just brush on the paint? Either way it looks good.

You said the IF symbols are from a tank upgrade kit, are these from forgeworld?

It all looks good, looking forward to seeing it all painted.

Cheers folks, The paint is just sunburst yellow with a hint of water but I applied it with the large drybrush. (but not using it in the manner a drybrush normally would be) There's a few lumps and bumps where the GS has been applied but for the most part it's smooth and clean. The Fist parts are from direct only GW here:

I could post a tutorial if anyone's that interested. It's not particularly hard and with guidance could be done in a day I think. I used IG parts for the weapons but SM one's would do just as well so all you really need is a bog-standard land raider kit and some plasicard and tubing.
