I've recently thought about doing a Traitor Chapter, and decided to start with what they look like. As with the Steel Wings, I'll be putting things down as I work them out, but a brief outline is as follows.

(No prizes perhaps as to where I got the colour scheme etc from ^_^ )

Bahltimyr Reavers are the remnants of a previously Loyal Chapter who were caught in a botched battle with Traitor Marines. The other Chapters, realising that the only way to contain the threat posed by [insert name of traitor Legion] was to bomb the area on the Planet that the Renegades had amassed. The Bahltimyr Rayvens as they were previously known didn't get the signal to fall back and were hit by the bombardment as well. Thinking that the other Chapters had betrayed them, they managed to survive but with a heavy cost. What few of them remained renamed themselves and swore vengeance on those who had attacked them.

More to come as I work it all out ^_^

Interesting idea. I'd like to see more. Perhaps they keep a record of the other Loyalist chapters that did the bombarding, and pursue them across the galaxy to gain their bloody vengeance. Destroying one, then moving on to the next? Which would only really work if you used chapters names you created yourself, but still, I think it'd be cool ^_^

Battle Cry: "Life is Fleeting, but Vengeance is Eternal!"?

I like the Battle cry (I may have to "borrow" it ^_^ ) As for bit about keeping a tally of the Chapters who did the dirty on them, well I do have an idea of two about that.... maybe including another certain Chapter of mine currently down on it's luck.....

I'll be adding more soon. Thanks for commenting! ^_^

"guess where i got the title from"?

baltimore? :P

Yep, been a Ravens fan for 5 years. I was going to have them as a Loyalist Chapter, but as long as it's been since I've played a Loyalist army, it's been even longer since I've played Chaos (fomer BL player in the RT days :D ) The call of Chaos was too great :P

They're going to be a Chaos undivided force (hence the Black armour to honour my BL roots) ^_^

a UK ravens fan? awesome

that mean you're originally from here, or just plain like the team?

i've been an avid ravens fan since i can remember haha....our team this year is amazing. should be a really good year.

No, I'm a Limey :D I got into American Football through a friend (who is a Rams fan - Ouch!), been following them since. Have a couple of Shirts (a Jamal Lewis one I bought in NYC [and I got a few nasty looks when I bought it :P ] from 5 years ago and the white version of Mcgahee's as a present)

cool stuff

i'm curious then, why ravens and not pats or steelers or colts? plenty of good teams out there :P

I was just messing around with the painter and I couldn't get the colours accurate enough for any of the others :P I was going to have the Colts as the Traitor Marines, but I thought "You know what, purple looks far more Chaosy", so I went with it. I will probably have the Colts and maybe the Rams (or some subtle variation*) as the Loyalists who were amongst those who handed their butts to them, just so I can have the Reavers seek vengeance! :D

*When I say subtle I mean not completely obvious ^_^

Left for dead - The Bahltimyr Reavers

The Bahltimyr Reavers are the remnants of a Chapter previously thought destroyed in a Campaign over [insert specifics when worked out] years ago. The Campaign in question involved 5 Chapters who had attacked an Enclave of Chaos Space Marines from various Factions. It was realised, a week into the Campaign, that the Planet in question had already been perverted beyond redemption and the Leader of the Expedition was left with no choice but to deliver Exterminatus to prevent the Renegades any chance of escaping. In the melee, the instruction to fall back was not given to the Commanding officer of the Chapter known as the Bahltimyr Rayvens. As the ordinance was sent screaming through the nights' sky, it was too late to warn the Rayvens of what was happening. An exhaustive search of the area was conducted, but to no avail. It was assumed that the entire Chapter was destroyed.

It wasn't until over 600 years later, that a Warband in colours similar to those of the Rayvens had attacked the Home Worlds of three Chapters also involved in that campaign, that the truth becoame to be known. There were survivors. And that they were intent on destroying those who had in their eyes betrayed them......

"We were mistaken to follow the teachings of Guilliman. It made us weak, inflexible and impotent. The Gods have shown us our true path. We will pave it with the bones of whom ever get in our way!" - Rhomanek Daspore, the Guider of fates.

As the Bahltimyr Rayvens, they were utterly dedicated to Serving the good of Humanity. Their pride in their Geneline, that of Noble Guilliman, and ultimately of the Emperor was evident in their actions on and off the battlefield. Their home planet of Bahltimyr had many shrines dedicated to both, and a large Library chronicling the deeds of their Parent Chapter, the Ultramarines. The Rayvens sought to become as equals with them, and many Marines at some point in their lives make a Pilgrimage to Ultramar. To become an officer, this was a mandatory condition of the position. Whilst in Ultramar, the Marines would see first hand what a Chapter is capable of - Protection of Humanity as a whole from countless enemies, and the position of Diplomats, to heed the populace and ensure the rights of Mankind were upheld.

The Reavers now, however heed nothing of their former heritage. They are utterly dedicated to destroying everything the Imperium of Man holds sacred. Bitterness has taken the ethos of the survivors to an extreme rage to rival that of the World Eaters. Whilst having non of the Augmented surgery the later have, the perceived betrayal by those they called Brothers has brought forth everything that a Loyalist shudders to think of. Bloodlust unyeilding, Avarice unlimited and a thirst for power that can never be sated.

It is unknown for how long the Reavers stayed on that fatefull planet, nor what it was that ultimately started the fall to Chaos, but when the remainder of the Chapter had taken the survivors away to plot anew, Bahltimyr had been ransacked, potential candidates taken away to recoup losses, before the planet was bombed from orbit. None of the settlements remain, and the planet is effectively lifeless. However, an effigy to Chaos Undivided made up of thousands of corpses was discovered in the Capital of Brunstown.

Recent actions

"Rejoice! You have been chosen to serve a greater cause! Rejoice, or die!" - Shiroh O'tomo - Chief Apothocary of the Bahltimyr Reavers.

The Reavers early on since their rebirth, have tried to stay away from areas that have fairly high concentrations of Space Marine activity to ensure that they have the best chance of re-strengthening their numbers. They have raided a few of the lesser protected planets in the Segmentum Pacificus, mainly to take away potential recruits. It has been speculated by Imperial scholars, that the Reavers have in some form or other been responsible for the destruction or significant weakening of three Chapters, directly or otherwise. It has also been speculated after researching their path across the Segmentum, the Reavers seem to be searching for something. Some have even gone on to speculate that the target is that of the fourth Chapter that resulted in their current position. Thus far, the Warband has not found whatever they seek.

Most notable of their campaigns against the Imperium was the battle of Rohsh'mbo plains of the Planet Rundoth. Unlike previous attacks, the Reavers targeted a temple specifically to obtain an artifact. What was taken is unknown, as the ferocity of the attack left nothing to examine afterwards. The denizens were by and large left unharmed. This has resulted in an Inquisitorial investigation of the Planet. It was revealed that a small cult devoted to Chaos undivided had implanted there. All subsequent reports were sealed.

Tactics

"Some say Battle is the crucible in which warriors are forged. Today, I will see to it that the forge is broken!" - Contemnamus

Because of the tragedy that before them, The Reavers have no sense of self preservation whatsoever, even more than that of of Legions and warbands. Although steps are taken to ensure new "recruits" are taken on each raid they make, individual Marines in the Warband seethe with rage, remembering what has happened to them. Marines are not dissuaded that much from reckless risk taking too much as to do so would invite dissension and fragment what is left of the Warband. The Leader, Contemnamus, prefers that the anger is spent on the battlefield than off it. It also ensures that any potential rivals for the leadership are kept to a minimum.

The organisation has changed little from the time of their founding. It would seem that despite their hatred of the Imperium, the tactics that brought both themselves and that of their parent Chapter success, suffice, a delicious irony considering their hatred of Guilliman and the Imperium in general. However, because of the decisions the group has had to make to survive, tactics on the battlefield lean heavily to frontal assault with close combat weapons. Heavy weapons units exist, but are usually used as a diversionary tactic than to break lines in the enemies position. Dreadnoughts are used and indeed seemed to be favoured - unusual when other Renegades view internment as living death. Although there are Marines who fulfill positions similar to that of Chaplains and Librarians, it would seem that both positions have merged. Such individuals, known as Guiders are frantic with rage, even compared to their charges, carving devastation wherever they tread. Due to attrition, Tactical Dreadnought (Terminator) armour is at a premium and are usually worn by individuals who have proven themselves time and again.

Battle Cry

Vengence is eternal!

"For the Pantheon!"

Just realised one of the pictures is far larger than the others :D I'll have to resize that when I have time.

Please comment, as it all makes sense in my head, but I really need an objective outside view of it all!

I think the battle cry should be cut to, "Vengence is eternal." I suggest Malice be their Chaos Patron, as it seems the way the current fluff and talk on the boards is that he is the god of people wronged (like your guys!).

By the way, I love the Ravens. My parents live about two hours from the stadium and I am pretty sure they are the only NFL team that still has a band. Awesome!

Malice? I haven't heard of that Chaos God. Is that similar to Malal? Or something entirely seperate?

but were not all that adaptable when dealing with more idiosyncratic foes.

This seems needless, unless you are going to dedicate time to a battle or moment when the Codex failed them against a unique foe or tactic.

I was going to lead up to something, where once they turned renegade, they become wildly unpredictable on the battlefield. That they throw all caution to the wind, despite their very low numbers, but I neglected to finish that part before I posted it :)

I'll have a run through soon and iron as much out as I can.

I think you should mention why they would think the loyalist chapter did that to them rather than think it was just what was, a mistake. Maybe they already had some sort of issues with those chapters like SW and DA. It doesn't make much sense they would just suddenly think that they would do that. Unless of course they were already kinda edgy mentally or they were already being influenced by chaos in some manner.
I think it makes perfect sense for the chapter to think they were being betrayed; look at the circumstances. All of the other chapters had left before the bombardment, all of them were safe and sound in their ships, except for the Reavers. I would see it as more than a mistake if all the other marines saftly left and I was stranded to be blown to bits.

This is how I saw it - a simple communication error resulted in all other Chapters withdrawing, leaving the Bahltimyr Rayvens (Reavers) to their fate. WHat really clinches it in the eyes of the survivors, is that non of the others looked for any signs that the Rayvens had survived. They had assumed that all had perished and that nothing could be done. This is what the first step to Chaos was - their perceived rejection by their "Brother" Chapters, literally leaving them for dead.

Thank you both Sons of Erebor and Celestial Dragon King for commenting

It's been a while since I lasted posted anything Reaver related, so just a little something for now. I want to have the following passage (in some form or other) as a side bar to add a little flavour to the Warband. Hopefully it will give a little hint of what happened on the Planet and give an indication of just how desperate the situation was to even think of giving themselves to the Dark Gods. The name(s) are place holders for now.

Rhomanek Daspore came to and felt intense pain, the likes of which he had never felt, before or since. He could barely move his head high enough to see what had happened to the others, but he had seen the parcels of death in the sky. He could not, would not believe it. He managed to get into an approximate sitting position. As far as the eye could see, there was devastation. Smoke from the remnants of the building he was next to when the deadly missiles had hit covered everything.

It's a mistake, a horrible mistake. Or perhaps the hit was the reason he was experiencing a horrible nightmare due to the toxins in his system. Terrible thoughts came unbidded by the dozen, the hundred. He called out on the vox, to anyone who could hear. Static, mocking, taunting. Managing to stand, shaky to begin with, he walked toward what was, before the attack, the hub of the Chaos incursion. A despicable altar, dedicated to Chaos undivided. Daspore approached warily, the bodies or Renegade Marines and humans alike everywhere. All dead. Daspore checked his bolter. Empty. Holstering it, he took out his pistol and felt a little better, the grip reassuring him of his purpose.

Purpose? What purpose? It has been stripped from you. You have nothing left. Your brothers have left you for dead.

Where had that thought come from? It's a terrible mistake. A targetting error, or maybe the Heretics had launched the attack.

You know the truth. They left you. Used you. Left you for dead when there was nothing left to take from you. Accept it. Use it. You have no further use for them either, now that they have revealed their true colours.

"Who are you? Show yourself!" Daspore shouted.

There is nothing to show. I am merely a messenger, or rather the wool pulled from your eyes.

!I can see clearly enough!"

Really? Then why are you denying what has happened? Accept it! You now have the advantage. They think you dead! Use it!

Daspore had by now located a Rhino, and had tried to see if the machines' spirit had not abandoned the shell. It had not. Typing in a command code, he used the relay sensor suite to transmit a message to the Rayven's Flagship. After a few minutes, the response came back. No other ships were in orbit. They had gone.

Daspore felt a choking bile rise to his gullet, slowly at first, but gathered momentum. Fighting the urge to vomit, he smashed the Rhino's interior, finally tearing the rear hatch of it's hinges when it refused to open quick enough.

He was used. Left for dead. Accept it. He was used. Left for dead. Use it!

The scream he made would have been deafening to anyone left alive to hear it.

I may instead use this in some form to start a story about the Reavers, but for now I'll leave it here so I can work on the Reavers motivation etc.....

LOL i love this!!! baltimore ravens as traitor marines....... Make the chapter master named art model and make the marines original colors brown and orange and you will have many friends in cleveland, ohio. as you ma not be from cleveland you may not know that art model owned the cleveland browns, ran them into the dirt and then sold the team to baltimore where they were renamed the ravens.

Have added a few bits and pieces and have tried a little more formating. I realise that a few things may not be an kind of logical order, but for now I'm putting things in whilst I remember them. Please, by all means point out anything that does not make sense. I could really do with a bowling ball or two ^_^ to iron out the bumps and creases.

Thanks for looking! :D

I hate to bump this again so soon after the last time, but I really need some feedback on this. It looks okay to me, but I have read it to myself so many times that I can't be objective with it at the moment. And, although I have other stuff to add, I don't see the point in adding it if there are things wrong with what I've already put. I'd prefer to get what I've put right (if it need putting right) now than have to fundamentally rip it all to shreds later.

Thanks ^_^

Edit: Forgot to say it's all in post 12 ;)

An exhaustive search of the area was conducted, but to no avail. It was assumed that the entire Chapter was destroyed.

- As I recall Exterminatus uses viral warheads that renders a planet lifeless, also making it uninhabitable for a period of time; how would a search be condcuted? Also, why was the entire Chapter present in the first place? Any capital ships would most likely have had a Marine compliment.

And that they were intent on destroying those who had in their eyes betrayed them......

- A bit too much like the tag line for a movie, also use of the elipses is usually confined to a three and doesn't really work in this instance.

Not a lot is known about The Reavers...

It is unknown whom the fourth Chapter is, although theories abound as to whom it is.

- Much like with cheating on your missus, someone always knows.

In the Beliefs section you end up talking less about the actual beliefs and more about how they are or are not like this Chapter or that.

Recent Actions

- Give that kind of thing a miss, if you want something included give a description of a pivotal action - something that brought them to the brink of destruction or was a great vicotry against Imperium, either way make it important and describe it.

...reckless risk...

- There isn't really anything like a safe risk, risk itself is dangerous... Kinda jars me out of the mindset.

Tactics

- If it's about tactics, why do you end on a discussion of organisation?

The organisation has changed little from the time of their founding. It would seem that despite their hatred of the Imperium, the tactics that brought both themselves and that of their parent Chapter success, suffice, a delicious irony considering their hatred of Guilliman and the Imperium in general.

- I answer this with the following:

"We were mistaken to follow the teachings of Guilliman. It made us weak, inflexible and impotent. The Gods have shown us our true path. We will pave it with the bones of whom ever get in our way!" - Rhomanek Daspore, the Guider of fates.
