So did we ever come to a conclusion on the Blood Champ...

It seems you guys have the same problem as the regular codex command squad does. The consensus with vanilla is that the apothecary and company champion cannot take upgrades because they are no longer veterans.

Yep. I wished they worded our codex the same. Instead of having guys with stat line Honor Guard in the Honor Guard, just call them Veterans. Would make it so much easier.

I agree JamesI had they used veterans in the same way that our 3rd and 4th ed honour guard were made up of veterans then this would not be in contention but as it stands....

I still don't see the issue. Honor Guard is refering to teh model type, not the unit. Thats the way it is for all units, upgrades refer to the model (space marines or sergeant in tac squads, honor guard, blood champion or sanguinary novitiate in Honor Guard squads)

The problem is the way it can be interpreted as we've stated in this thread, my group for example interpreted it one way, but I understand this is something we're never likely to agree on jamesI so perhaps we should drop it and get on with our gaming

The problem is simply that in this case Honour Guard is the name of both the unit and the model. When it says "Any Honour Guard" that can be taken to read any model in the Honour Guard unit or any model that is of the Honour Guard type. The former allows anyone to be upgraded but the latter excludes the Sanguinary Novitiate and any Blood Champion. If they changed the name of the model to Veteran they can then distinguish between any model in the unit and any Veteran. That one simple change would resolve all these problems.

I agree it would be easier, but in every case the wording always applies to the model. Is there another unit where the wording applies to the unit name?

And trust me, it wouldn't fix the problem entirely. I've played against codex marines players who have apothecaries with power fists and company champions with storm shields (and this guy had the gall to give his champion a storm shield without paying for it since clearly the company champ should get as good of gear as the rest of the guys)

I believe it would fix the problem as long as they then clarify the upgrade options as being either any model or any veteran. Job done.

In the absence of such a fix though, I would agree that the upgrades refer only to models, not the unit as a whole. So the Blood Champion gets gimped whilst the Honour Guard get pimped.

well, thankfully, the blood champion is optional.

Yeah I'm thinking about not upgrading, but the option of using the Emperor's Champion as my Blood Champion is too cool too pass up. Finally, I get to incorporate one of my favorite 40k models into my Blood Angels army.

It took 59 posts to this thread to say what I thought to myself just reading the Subject a few days ago. I'd just give all 4 HGs an SS & PS, attach any IC and let them munch thru enemy squads.
Wouldn't it be better to give them storm shields and lightning claws?

Absolutely. Same cost + rerolls to wound. I just didn't feel Lightning Claws would be considered as "knightly" as Power Swords, so I guess I handicapped myself a little bit to maintain the fluff of my army. :( But in all honesty, I tried HG twice with Tycho and once with Dante and I wasn't that impressed. They just didn't fit my style. I actually switched to 6 Terminators + Librarian (in TDA) to perform the role of deathstar.
