MaleOpener
Wolf brothers and sisters, Casting aside the idea of replacing all my rhinos with razorbacks, I found myself on page 69 of the rulebook looking at the rules for "ramming". Though it says its ideal for tanks with destroyed weapons or "crew shaken" results, it doesn't say anything about an empty transport. My plan was, after I dropped a GH pack to sit on an objective, I'd use the empty rhino to "ram" squads and otehr vehicles. Is this legal? I figure it is since the example given on page 69 uses a rhino. Thanks in advance. WG Vrox
Sure, but unless you are hitting rear armor your chances of being able to roll on the damage table is pretty low. AV 11 + 1 for being a tank and + your movement does not give a rhino enough ramming power to use the tactic with a consistent result. Your better off taking a 10 man GH pack with 2 Meltas and driving around shooting out the fire ports. After a deployment I find your better off keeping your Rhino around as a line of sight blocker or tank shocking a nearby infantry unit away from your exposed troops. Adding a PMSB for 2 is not a bad 10 points spent and trying to keep the Rhino close so it's available for further transport / protection after they clean up an area is a better use of the 35 points. Now don't get me wrong I have and will continue to use a Rhino that has lost its pack to Ram/objective contest, tank shock, park in front of something to force a bottle neck and many many other uses per the need, but as described above ramming is pretty low on my list of available options. Now a Vindi that has had it's weapon destroyed is a whole different ballgame. Vrox. Bulweih
Hey there, it's perfectly fine with the rules, if I don't use my rhino as mobile cover for a lone wolf etc. I tend to do the same thing with it. It's a hell lot of fun at times  . In bigger games with the spearhead rules I thought about using three empty rhinos for that ramming-unit where they count as having 15 in the front when they ram stuff and give -1 on the morale for tankshocking. Vassakov
Whilst an Empty Rhino *can* ram, very little often results of it. You might dent a Sentinal, or some kind of light vehicle but actual damage will be limited. Now, a Land Raider... well, once I had the opportunity to move it 12", ram a Chimera in half and then pour PotMS Assault Cannon Fire in the remnants of the squad. Much fun was had. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/206130-ramming-rhinos/#findComment-2459018 Share on other sites
JamesI
I've taken empty rhinos/razorbacks and flung them 18 inches into an enemy tank. Usually all that happens is the rhino wrecks itself, but its funny to do anyway. BlackSpike
As Army310 says, Tank Shock can be very handy. Bunch foes up ready for Templates Of Doom, break their morale and shepherd them off the table, split their coherency so they have to move (good vs Devastator/Long Fang/lootas etc). Personally, my transports never last long enough to do this! Foes pop that AV11 for to easy! GuruD
However if you are using the spearhead expansion then you could take the crusher spearhead and have an armor value much higher than normal for ramming purposes and even have the ability to take on land raiders. Just a thought. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/206130-ramming-rhinos/#findComment-2459122 Share on other sites
Hotspur
I've never used my rhinos for anything but carrying my squads around, but tank shocking with an empty rhino does sound kind of fun... :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/206130-ramming-rhinos/#findComment-2459156 Share on other sites
Stormshrug
Strategic tank shocking can be very effective with empty Rhinos. You can occasionally force something back off of an objective, or away from one of your squads, with careful use of Rhinos. And yes, I *have* rammed with a Rhino, though never to any real effect. It's fun, though. Heck, I once built a WALL using Rhinos to keep a Trigon off of my rear flank for a while. I lost two rhinos to this tactic, but it was better than having him running amok all over my troops. -Stormshrug Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/206130-ramming-rhinos/#findComment-2459224 Share on other sites
Nadir
If I want to ram with mine Rhinos, they're always empty, and I use them against eldar War Walkers:) or Sentinels, or even rear armor of enemy transports (regular tanks don't give their rear armor for Rhino spank too easily).
