Assault Sergeant

Recommended Posts

Sometimes you just need to paint a tabletop mini to relax and take a break from all this blending, glazing and crazy detail that goes in a display mini. So another marine is getting ready to join the ranks of my army.

In case you wanna know more about the technique used on the armour and metallics here's a tutorial: http://burnedbrush.blogspot.com/2010/07/pa...ce-marines.html

I'm glad you like it so much Zarnak! ;) To be honest I still think it's tabletop quality but I like the dark tone of the armour and the ease of painting so... yes, I'm enjoying it a lot.

As for the jump pack, I usually paint backpacks and jump packs seperately so they don't get in the way when I'm painting hard to reach parts. I glue them on after painting is done but before varnishing.

I really like this mini and the colour that you're using on it. Can I ask how you've done it. From what I can tell it involves multiple layers of colour to build the effect.... perhaps drydrushing metallics over a black undercoat followed by glazes with the citadel washes... but that's that's just me hazarding a guess.

I look forward to seeing how this mini progresses

Hi

I love jump pack models, and this one looks fantastic. Usinf the thunder hammer effectively can be tricky. I wish all the luck of the blessed Emperor battle brother :D

I LOVE IT!

So, let me get this strait (b/c the tutorial didn't say);

1. the metallics are the basecoat right?

2. and then the ink washes are what gives the color to the armor?

3. what about highlights?... is there no need for highlights due to the paints you use?

Wow, so many replies so fast. I'm flattered!

@ Rasmus: I think you've figured it out correctly. The metalics serve as a basecoat. Due to the fact that the inks/ washes are translucent the metalic pigment shows through and serves as a highlight. It's like sending your marine armour to West Coast Customs for a metalic paintjob. :tu:

@ sideshowscott: Jump packs are great. For me, they embody the essence of the marines' strike tactics and the desperate way battles are fought in 40k. Pluss everyone wants to strap a rocket to his back and fly into battle. At the moment I have assault sergeants with power sword, power axe, powerfist and thunderhammer for versatility. Your jump pack marine looks really nice. I love the power sword effect.

@ Pig Of Sparta: Actually your guess is spot on. For a detailed tutorial look here: http://burnedbrush.blogspot.com/2010/07/pa...ce-marines.html ;)

@ Brother Rathul: He's a memberof my yet unnamed BA succesor chapter. They were originally named Storm Ghosts but then I decided to change the fluff and name but never really got to it. The idea is that they would use the BA rulles but their fluff would be an antithesis of the BA fluff eg the Death would be a highly trained elite squad. The idea is that they're a chapter that relies very much in meticulous planning and strikes at the heart of the enemy using daring and radical tactics. I was going to write a short piece about how the Chapter Master destroyed a chaos Titan by droping from low orbit, releasing a single vortex grenade and using his jump pack to escape at the last possible moment but... I never really got to it. And on a parting note I'd like to ad that I started this army before the new BA codex. You know, before they were "trendy". :P

Thanks for confirming that for me, now I'm gonna try and find a mini to try this on. Oh and figure out how to mix a tin bitz colour from scorched brown and boltgun metal . (I went and check out your blog. Very impressive)

cheers

Thanks for confirming the technique. I can't wait to try it out.

I am hugely impressed on how that Rhino turned out... I had my doubts on this technique for vehicles, but that's been put to rest. It looks like it really wuldn't take any time at all.

One more question for you:

Do you put any clear coat/protectant on your painted models? It seems like 'Ardcoat might work well. But it might dull the mini too much, seeing as it's already a "dark" figure. Your analysis?

He's slowly starting to come together. Finished leather parts and scrolls now. All that remains is green parts (purity seal wax and eyes) and some golden details and he'll be ready to charge into battle.

@ Pig Of Sparta: Thanks for checking out my blog. It's my first effort in blogging so it's always nice to hear possitive comments. When you try the technique let me know. I'd like to see what you'll paint.

@ Razmus: After a lot of trial and error I'm using Vallejo Model Air Varnish sprayed through an airbrush. I spray just 2 bursts from each side (front, rear, left, right, top) at 35 - 40 psi. I first spray gloss varnish, then matte and then I paint gloss varnish with a brush on any gems, lenses etc. I never had any luck with GW's varnishes and the nice thing with Vallejo Varnish is that it never turns cloudy. If you overdo it it just turns less mate, sorta satin. I know this method is neither easy, nor particularly cheap but the peace of mind is worth it IMHO. Also do let me know when you try the technique for painting armour.

Ok, not wanting to thread-jack or anything, but you said you'd like to see what I painted using your technique. He's still very much WIP but when I got to thinking about it, this mini was kinda screaming 'give me a really good colour scheme' so I'm going to :)

the red is a little bit darker in real life and the detailing is actually silver, the yellow-ness has come from the light in my kitchen. Once I make some more progress on this guy I might start up a thread for him and get some better lit pictures.

I'd like to now return this thread to Brother Captain

thanks

James

@ Pig Of Sparta: Don't worry about highjacking this thread. I'm very flattered that you tried this technique and posted the result here. If you make a WIP thread for your marine please post a link in this thread. Or you can post the WIP here too if you like. The marine looks very nice so far and I'm also slightly jealous because I didn't manage to get that mini when it was available. You'll be amazed to see how the armour will look even better when you paint all the details. One thing I forgot to mention about the technique is that the intensity of the colour of the metalics and the armour will depend on how heavy the drybrush is. You could experiment with that if you want a darker or brighter effect on future minis.

Now while you were painting your Marine I managed to do just a bit of work myself. In fact the mini is now finished! It still needs varnishing and some static gras but basically it's done.

Glad you didn't mind me hijacking mate. I have to say that this technique definately requires further investigation. Without a doubt it is definately the fastest way I've seen and tried so far to get decent looking armour colours onto power armour. I've been using drybrushing on my Space Pups, but that invloved several layers plus glazes, this is just so simple ;).

I think the other variation of the colours (apart from the weight of the drybrush layers) is that I've been using Baal Red rather than Red INk (because I don't have any) which I'm guessing isn't quite as intense in it's colour. Not that I'm complaining. It seems that I'm finding more and better uses for the Washes than just shading stuff.

I've done a little more work on the mini tonight but I was on a late shift so it's nothing worth posting photos for. What I think I'll do is start up a WIP thread and post a link to your thread in it. I think I'll put a link to your Blog too. It's only right that you get credit for this technique.

Now enough about my mini, I tink your one looks great. What I really like (and what what I'm kind of doing as well) is the really small pallette of colours you've used. Some PA mini's end up looking really garish because of the amount of different coloured bling on them. This one doesn't. By restricting your use of colours you've created a very grim-dark marine who looks just like he's stepped out of the 41st millenium.

cheers

James

This is f****** EPIC!

Though the model seems to consist only out of very dark colours (only the green eyes and seals are flashing), you still get every detail!

Simply lovin it!! Need more...

You know it's the classic 40k recipe: a double dose of grimdarkness with just a sprinkling of bright details. You can check out more such models in my blog. ;)
