vikingwolves
This is a little late in coming, but last week was my first 40k tourny. Z and I both left for this small tournament and played about 8 hours for 3 games. We did have breaks in between, lol. But it was a great long time of geekness. Z brought Orks and I brought Space Wolves. Here is my army list: HQ- 1500 Rune Priest- w/ Chooser of the Slain Powers: Living Lighting and Murderous Hurricane Wolf Lord- w/ Power Fist Storm Shield Wolf Tooth Necklace Saga of the Beastslayer Elites- 3 Wolf Guard- w/ 3 Combi-Meltas 3 Power Fist 5 Wolf Scouts- w/ Melta gun Troops- 8 Grey Hunters w/ Melta Wolf Banner MotW Rhino 8 Gray Hunters w/ Melta Wolf Banner MotW Rhino 10 Grey Hunters- w/ Melta Gun Wolf Standard Plasma Gun Fast Attack- 3 Thunder Wolf Calvary- w/ Wolf Claw Melta Bombs Heavy Support- Predator Annihilator 6 Longs Fangs- w/ 5 Missle Launchers After waiting for the store to open and people to arrive, we final got set up and got to our first games. I opened up the day with playing against one of Z's old friends who happens to also play Orks. Where Z's army was a horde of green, his friend's was all about speed. He had 20 Nob bikers, 4 Deff Koptas, and 2 War Trakk Skorchas. A little Orks army but with a lot of punch and grit. Mission was Capture and Control (He had one objective and I had another and we had to control both or knock the other one off to win) and I won the roll off. I choose to go 2nd so I had an extra round of shooting and assaulting. Setup was pretty simple. I placed my tank to cover two avenues of attack while forcing him to take the long way round or get Lascannoned in the face. My Long Fangs covered the middle and the 3rd avenue of attack while sitting on top of the objective. My two Gray Hunters in APCs (Rhinos) sat in front of their objective and the footslogging squad sat home also. Scouts and Thunderwolves were held in reserve. Turn 1: He kept one of his 10 man bike squads on is objective and rushed forward his other 10 man bike squad up the center with his Deffkpotas and Skorchas flanking around the long way. Rushed my Rhino with my Rune Priest and Gray Hunters up the center. This would prove to be both a boon and an error on my part. Long fangs shot at the Bikers but didn't make contact with the missles because they were going so fast. The Predator tank shot down a Deffkopta with it crashing down into some woods. Turn 2: Skorchas and Koptas move forward some more and the Orks see a lonely Rhino in the open all by it's lonesome. They move around it like a pack of hungry hyenas and assault it with ease, blowing it up in a firey conflageration. Only the Rune Priest is able to pull himself out of the debacle, and a little worse for ware to. The bikes then completely enclose him. With my Rhino gone and only my rune priest left, he planned on wrecking a little vengence on the greenskins before he passed onto the next life. I fired my missles once more into the bikes and wrecked a little havoc by killing two of the bikes. Long Fangs rejoice a little, lol. Long range bolter fire does one or two more wounds and another Deff Kopta goes down to Lascannon fire from my tank. Ork technology is robust but iffy at best, lol. So my Rune Prist roars a prayer to Russ and the Allfather and charges the circling Nobs.He inflicts a couple of wounds and though valiant, he falls to a Power Klaw. This did tie up those Nobs for a good while, and gave me another round of firing which is what I need to do against those guys. Some tough mothers. Turn 3: Koptas finally emerge and charge for my objective along with the remaining bikers. Some shooting goes on but nothing huge. With the Koptas reduced in number I brought in my Scouts to deal with them from reserve. I left most of my stuff in place to deal with those damn bikes, unleashing a lot of bolter fire and missles at them. Did 1 more casuality I think (Pardon me that I didn't keep track, doing this off the top of my head). Scouts shot their meltas reducing the Koptas number and charged in finishing them off. They did take 2 casualties, but consolidated toward their objective. Turn 4 and 5: Game came down to the orks bikers charging into my objective in dramatic fashion. It was a bloody melee of Chainswords, Power Klaws, teeth, power fists, claws and in the end, my Thunder Wolf with a Wolf Claw slew the Ork Warboss after losing the scouts and a good portion of the Gray Hunters guarding the objective. Game ended in a tie but it was the best game of the day. I screwed up by leaving the lone Rhino on an island and getting popped by some burly Ork Bikers. But it did buy me time I needed to keep shooting at the Orks. They are just to damn powerful to charge in at full strength. But that is the strength of my Wolves, they are great in assault but are tactically flexible. Being able to adapt to a changing environment is a game breaker in this game. J was a good sport and a man that has played for more than 4 years, so I considered it a moral victory for me since I was facing a tough opponent. ;) hehe We took a lunch break here and got right back into it. My next opponent was a fellow Space wolves player actually. He was more of a hobby painter and loved how space wolves look, but he had an impressive list of terminators, a whirlwind, SkyClaws, BloodClaws, and Gray Hunters. This game was short and sweet. The terrain was dominated by elevated terrain all around the table edges and a center piece blocking any long range fields of fire. Mission was to kill each other as much as possible. He held his Skyclaws in reserve so he coud drop them on top of me anytime anywhere he wanted. He got first turn and moved his army left and right while leaving his long range stuff in the middle. Them being all on foot, he moved slowly. I had a lot more mobility so I was able to more faster and hit where I wanted first. Essentially we moved around each other till turn 3 and I sprung my trap. My thunder wolves crashed into his Blood Claws killing a few of them and killing the HQ unit heading them up. My Rhinos let out their Gray Hunters and brawled the Skyclaws to death and mauled the Gray Hunter squad he had. At this point he conceded the game as I really had control of the board. His BloodClaws and Skyclaws were dead, his one HQ unti was dead, his Long Fangs were hiding and his Termies were to far away to do anything. Speed was my assit here and applied the right amount force right where I needed it. I controlled the right flank and the his left was falling apart. Good game and great guy. We had one more break before our final game. And luck of luck, I had to play against a guy I always play against: Z. lol The horde Ork army Z had was good. He didn't have a any fast moving units like J, but he had more than 80 foot infantry compared to my 40. But I had Missles, a good tank, and APCs. The terrain was the same of the first game and he had three avenues of approach to my side of the board. Mission was sieze ground. I got lucky and was able to set up the majority of objectives on my side of the board. I seemed to have skipped out on getting first turn a lot this tourny, but that was fine. He ignored going up the middle since I had a great view of it from my spot. The short and sweet of this battle was he ran up the left side with his horde which was picked at a littl bit with missle fire and other things, but got bogged down by Thunderwolves. My scouts took out his single truck with nobs in it and they didn't get across the field in time to do anything but kill the scouts that slowed them down. By turn 5 time was up and I won. So in the end I got 2nd with Z oddly enough, but that is how it turned out with the victory tallies and paint job point extra points on the winner's army. Fun times. I will definetly do it again. vikingwolves
Actually, what prompted this a bit was TigerousX's request for a battle report after he helped me tweak my original list.
