Coolest undivided legion/chapter?

Iron Warriors.

Take one of the greatest seige forces in existence. Now factor in the power of Chaos. Now factor in Daemonic weaponry and armour. Now factor in 10,000 years of unending hatred, endless battle and living in the damn warp.

You now have a giant, genetically engineered, super pissed off, daemonic, hyper expierienced siege specialist.

Well, I must admit I'm rather fond of these lads ;) ;) :)

But if it's cannon Chaos Marines, I'd have to plump for Iron Warriors.

Basically, if there was a war to the end between all the Traitor Legions, they would stay in their impenetrable bunkers and fortresses while wll the others kill each other, then they'd shell the few survivors from a safe distance with Vindicators and looted Basilisks B)

Coming back to this and actually answering the question, I feel that the Black Legion is my favourite. Why? Way back when the HH was more of a footnote than how it is now, I loved the fact that yes, they ran with their tails between their legs. Yes, their Primarch was cloned (and subsequently destroyed) and yes, after much messing about with BL Marines deliberately allowing themselves to be possessed, their numbers have dwindled, but they were (and still are in my opinion) the Best. With a capital B. And of course the big A(baddon) has caused the Imperium more headaches (time 13) than any one else.

So, yeah. Black Legion. Forever.

1. Night Lords because they were kicked out just because they were to awesome at scaring the bejesus out of people

2. Iron Warriors because "their guns are bigger than yours" and have an actual personality to them

3. Alpha Legion because they messed with heads when they were good guys and continue the tradition today

4. Word Bearers because they're in your shrine, burnin' your priests.

Also, in Soul Hunter, there are specific squads of Night Lords that follow Khorne and even a company leader who's now some wierd daemon-marine-slug-mutant thing, so Berserkers would work, long as you add NL colors.

Night Lords. awsome because they dont actually worship chaos (they just despise the imerium). But chaos has corrupted many of there men.

aside from not worshipping chaos they are huge vampire marines. they have black eyes and live in darkness.

and not to mention the most awsome primarch of them all. a badass that beat up Dorn, could see the future, blew up his own planet and that he came to rule by killing crims. And had a spectacular exit by letting a an assain kill him because he saw it in his dreams.

Best undivided? It's got to be Alpha Legion. Think about it... What's cool? Space Marines. What's Cooler then Space Marines?(Not counting Space Wolves xD) Chaos Space Marines.. Now what's even cooler then that? NINJA Chaos Space marines. Can you really get cooler then that, I mean really? Even more so after reading Legion.

Word Bearers. I love chaos, and the Word Bearers are the only undivided legion who truely embody chaos. With the other four, even Black Legion, their character is centered around secular issues and their affiliation with the Ruinous Powers is somewhere between a circumstantial convenience and a circumstantial inevidability. Not so XVII Legion, who sought out the Four as an end in itself, who found them first, who embraced them without reluctance or haggling over pacts. Word Bearers are *defined* by their championing Chaos, something which can't truely be said of any other legion.

It also helps that I've always been sort of awestruck by the sort of irrational magesty in truely zealous conviction, the sort of faith that gets called either "unshakeable" or "blind" depending whether you agree or not. To me that's fascinating. entirely beyond my experience. I used feel the same way watching tornados from the roof of my house.

My list would once have continued alphas, night lords, black, iron warriors... and I suppose it still does, though I'm not a real fan of the fluff revamps Black Library has given the first two. I liked Alphas when they were the most organized, most disciplined, and most tactically efficient legion of astartes, perfectionist to a fault due to their thirst for respect within the Crusade despite their lack of experience, and sided with Horus for the chance to prove their superiority to the older Legions by meeting them in open warfare. I liked the Night Lords when the fear they inspired was less due to their overt terrorism and more due to their absolute disregard for innocents and collateral damage, their unfazeable attitude of the ends justifying the means on even the most hideously disproportionate scale. I liked Alphas who made a sport of toying with their brother Legions, staging raids and prosecuting campaigns in which they withheld parts of their force as deliberate handicap, figuratively winning with one hand behind their backs. I liked Night Lords who calmly flattened a hive-city from orbit becaise its governor was suspected of tax fraud, and who deliberately engaged enemies in Imperial residential districts because it interfered with their targetting sensors.

The Black Library versions of Emperor-loyal Alphas trying to defeat Chaos by helping it and Night Lords who roleplay old Spawn comics between brooding on their anti-heroic contradictions just lack that cold, psychotic, all-too-human evil. The books replaced Hannibal Lecters with Fallen Batmans. Not horrible personalities to use, but archetypal and angsty doesn't beat chilling, unadorned psychopathy with the gritty simplicity of the believable.

My own undivided chaos space marine warband of course :) , but if I had to choose one from the cannon: Black Legion.

No other legion is as purely focussed on causing damage to the imperium than Black Legion. They've always had a very central role in the 40k background and Abaddon is by far the most bad-ass dude ever to have commanded a Legion aside from a primarch. The fact that they do not discriminate among their allies shows that they're a ruthlessly practical force that is not going to stop unless all opposition is completely wiped from the face of the galaxy. For the rest I stand by what Aquilanus said a few posts back. They are simply the Best chaos space marine legion with a capital B. The other legions are nice, but deep down everyone knows that it's going to be the BL that deal the death blow to all that is good and just in the 41st millenium.

I haven't really written any background for my warband yet (despite having several ideas floating around), but I'm very tempted to think of them as a newly turned renegade warband that's on a trial crusade to earn Abaddon's approval and a place among the ranks for the final black crusade. Sounds like a great way to justify playing loads of battles and occasionally being able to field the man himself in an apoc game or something.

Characteristics of each Traitor legion;

Alpha Legion: Deceiving, untrustworthy but loyal in heart, believing the ends justify the means. Tragic Heroes.

Black Legion: Misguided, twisted, believing they were betrayed. Misguided sons.

Death Guard: ridiculously tough and resilient, turned to chaos to survive Warp pox. Survival instinct.

Emperor Children: Outlandish perfectionists, Ruled by a demon under the guise of a prince. Loyal to there commanders till the end.

Iron Warriors: Spiteful, Trench warfare specialists, Minds like an Iron cage. Brooding children.

Night Lords: Scaremongers, psychological warfare specialists. Unloved heroes

Thousand Sons: Psykers beyond equal, users of forbidden practises. Men of dust.

Word Bearers: Religious fanatics, worshippers searching for the greatest entity. The true heretics.

World Eaters: Bloodthirsty, enraged, crazed. Bloodthirsty in the extreme.
