Njal Stormcaller

At my hobby club we are running a "tale of four gamers" type deal, building an army up 250 points at a time, and my current HQ is a stock standard Rune Priest (we are only at 500 points so far, haven't even gotten into month 2 yet) and every else seems to be using a Special Character! Hell the Eldar are taking Eldrad, the Tyranids are packing the Swarmlord, the Codex Marines are taking Pedro.... even the Orks are taking Wazdakka (ignore the fact I am the one playing them as well :)) so while we aren't allowed to change our lists in a major way (like the RP becoming a WP) we are alloed to change to a certain degree (like my RP turning into Njal)

Here is the list of opponents:

Sisters of Battle

Blood Angels

Codex Marines

Eldar

Orks

Kroot Mercenaries

Tyranids

World Eaters

Imperial Guard

Codex Marines (yes another one)

Space Wolves

And because everybody that can take psyker defences is because of Eldrad, there is alot of Psykers running around...

So do you think that Njal would be worth the points in a 750 point list? Bear in mind we only play one game at each points value, and it is just Annhilate until 1000 points.

Here is the list he would be in:

(HQ) Njal Stormcaller, Terminator Armour

(TR) 10 Grey Hunters, 2 Plasma Guns

(TR) 10 Grey Hunters, 2 Meltaguns

(HS) Predator, Twin Linked Lascannon Turret, Lascannon Sponsons

Short answer?

No.

Long answer?

This is for a 750 pt game then the points increase with each round? Njal is a huge points sink. His psychic defense, as TigriusX stated, is excellent, but a normal Rune Priest ain't too shabby. Plus, they're a lot cheaper. If you've got the models/cash and time I'd spend those points on Rhinos/Razorbacks for your Grey Hunters. Or at least give them some Wolf Guard squad leaders.

In your specific situation with psyker heavy opponents as well as Eldrad he could be useful.

He dispels on a 3+...probably the best psyker defense around

Even if your opponent has his own psyker defense he can't stop the Lord of Tempests from going off. This could be useful against Eldar and their anti-psyker stones

I'm a bit "iffy" when it comes to special characters under 2k.

Though with other SCs running around, I don't think it would hurt :tu:

I'd personally would shrink the GH packs down to at least 6man, and squeeze in a PW.

I'd replace the pred with a LF pack instead. Arm them with MLs, making them cheap and more effective.

Maybe slide a 6man GH pack into a razorback ( keep HBs ), and have the remaining GH packs clumped into 2 larger packs instead? ( meltagun for the mounted GH , plasma guns for the sloggers )

Njal can be useful, but not really worth it, IMO. However, some sneaky git is bringing along Eldrad you might as well be kicking their butt downfield while marching

Well, at 750 he would be a third of your list... but then again I field him and a Wolf Lord at 1250 so I can't really talk :P

Really I suppose it depends on what you want the finished list to look like, if you are going for a more "shooty" army, he could work. If you are going to include him no matter what ask yourself whther you really need him at 750, or would you be better off toughing it out with your normal Rune Priest until 1250 points or so?
