New Ultramarine Recipe

Recommended Posts

Good afternoon people, I recently had a go at a new painting recipe put forward by....gah I cannot for the life of me think who now, but it involved drybrushing an undercoated a mini with a few shades of silver then applying layers of ink.

Well I gave it a go but ended up just playing about really and ended up with this Ultramarine colourscheme which I personally rather like...

(He's only a test model so the arrow for example on his knee isn't completed)

This led me to pop out and buy an Assault Marine kit and I have just finished putting these together...

I like the running legs and wanted to create a squad that looked like it was advancing in to the fight, something Space Marines are of course good at B)

Anyway I was just looking for some feedback, on both the test scheme and the new additions :)

Cheers,

Daniel

Wow, what a nice idea, and fantastic execution! Good job.

Oh, and by the by, how did you do the bullet holes and other work on that Ultramarine? They're subtle but give a really effective weathered effect.

thanks lexington, the battle damage is just the simple technique, basically a much darker shade of the armour is painted on, so in this case I jusrt mixed the Enchanted blue with chaos black, added it in spots over the armour, then you just highlight the lower edge with the highlight colour -_-

Wow looking great, nice weathering too

Thank you

I think I'll have to try your recipe. Would you like to share it with us, or even better, do a step-by-step?

Really cool, battle brother!

And my girl just told me that your Ultras looked better than mine. Thus I hate you ^^

Ooo possitive reviews :D thank you everyone..

Now the recipe for the blue....

1) Basecoat the mini with Chaos Black- using the spray can is better

2) Drybrush the whole mini with Chainmail- this is a fairly liberal drybrush concentrating on the armour

3) Add 2 washes of Asurmen Blue- let the first dry before doing the second

4) Layer on slightly watered down Enchanted Blue- being careful to leave the gaps the darker shade of the ink layer

5) Highlight with pure Space Wolves Grey on the upper edges

6) Final wash with Asurmen Blue

and there you have it :)

Thats for the blue armour of course, if people wish to know the entire process then I can alway do a full tutorial :)

Thanks everyone

Daniel

Double post but hey ho, I have a nice morning update for you.

I've been working on the sergeant and he is almost complete...

His armour and most of the detail is done, but as you can see I truly fail at power swords effects :D , Glowing eyes and lenses I can do, power swords on the other hand....no

and here's the second marine to be painted...

Again feedback is appreciated, thanks

Great looking Ultras. Very gritty.

What exactly is gained by the boltgun drybrush underneath the colors? Seems like the blue covers that up anyways, so what additional effect do you get that you wouldn't if you did not do the metallic drybrush?

good question and I'm glad someone asked it...basically.....I have no idea! Its just the how the technique started really, but I personally find that the top blue layer adheres to the mini better, I'm not sure why though, but to me somehow I can paint better like this haha, and I have no idea why

Hey, would a variation for either Blood Angels or Salamanders work with the same principal? Dry brush chain mail, go over in either baal red or thraka green, then either layer on blood red or a green variant??

Great looking mini!

One quick question though.

How much coverage do you give the drybrush of chainmail? Lightly, leaving the recesses black or heavy, covering the whole mini in a metalic look?

I ask b/c I think this is what gives that blue that "pops".

Thanks, Razmus.

Doing a red test mini as a stand in for blood angels tonigght, might post pics tmrr if it tuns out well.

:< Maybe I just fail, but I dont see the application of a dry brush before layering on paint, UNLESS you have water'd the paint down considerably and apply many thin layers.

I need a indepth analysis lol.

I love the color effects.... is this the link you guys were talking about? http://burnedbrush.blogspot.com/2010/07/pa...ce-marines.html

please do!!!

I have failed you. I dont think I did enough of a chain mail dry brush, or that I shouldve layerd a considerable amount more.

GAH EDITS GALORE!

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=155396 this is the post OP is refering to I believe. If so, I think the right course of action would be to paint the ENTIRE model in chainmail, proceed with numerous washes THEN layer on paint?

wow too many replies! but good though ;)

right to many of your questions here's my answer...

I have actually done a Red marine already using the same technique, and it works out exactly the same...

He was only a very rough test mini however

Great looking mini!

One quick question though.

How much coverage do you give the drybrush of chainmail? Lightly, leaving the recesses black or heavy, covering the whole mini in a metalic look?

Thanks Razmus, the drybrush is quite a liberal layer, the mini looks almost entirely silver with some black patches in the recesses.

If people wish to see the whole process then I'll be more than happy to do a tutorial, only if people want me too though ;)

Thanks everyone

Daniel
