DibbZi
So I'm not sure where I should of posted this thread, considering it is semi painting related. My army is in various stages from complete to still grey plastic (see signature for completed works). I try and paint @ a regular sched. of @ least a marine and a half a night, just I still feel over whelmed with all that I have been working on (about 2250 pts worth of marines). Now I know there has to be alot of people out there who suffer from the same issue I am facing. Any thoughts or idea on how to move past my funk that I have some how moved my self in too?? njm3
Dip if painting speed is an issue. Best motivator? Sign up for a paid tournament and have unpainted models. That's what I'm doing <_< Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/206378-question-about-a-painting-funk/#findComment-2462056 Share on other sites
WarriorFish
I know how you feel Brother, for some reason I'm part way through repainting both my Marines and Guard. It seems like a never ending struggle but the results are always worth it. As njm3 says there's nothing like a deadline to meet to motivate your painting! For my repainting I've made a sort of a schedule so I always know where I am. Though I'm too busy to set dates to anything I've put it into phases, each with a group of models to do. Phase 1 being the most important models I need to play (Tacs etc) and on to less used models. If I feel like it I'll set to work on a model out of plan if I want to - the most important thing is to have a plan but not feel like you can't bend it a bit to do something else. Another thing I've had success with is to make a list and refine until I'm happy - then paint the models I need for it! The best reward is always seeing your fully painted army on the table after all :) Good luck with your painting Brother, may the Emperor inspire you! dswanick
I feel your pain. In 2006 my house was completely flooded, so much stuff was destroyed. Luckily, my minis survived with just a nasty coat of muddy filth on them. However, I was forced to strip everything down to the base model and start from scratch. No small task given that a lot of my minis were plastic and I have, easily, 2 battle companies worth of marines, appr. 50 terminators, dozens of vehicles, plus a large guard force. Additionally, I got married arouind that time and we had a baby girl at the beginning of the year. I've finally gotten almost all the stripping done, and am now facing the equal daunting task of priming and repainting tens of thousands of points of marine and guard. My plan is to slowly work at about one squad per week, I can bring them up and paint tacticals while the wife and I watch TV or do other things. It's going to be slow, but I'll just take it in small steps. I would advise the same for you. I've also found that playing on a regular schedule helps me maintain motivation. I have a painted Space Wolves force I inherited from a friend who passed away, so I have something to keep in the gaming loop with, but I want to be able to field my own marines so I plan on painting them the same way most people get into the game - start with a HQ and 2 Troops, paint, play, add more units - painted as I want to play them. halfling hopperston
my only suggestion would be to break down them in to small combat squads of marines and paint a squad at a time rather then going for a model and a half. this way you will be able to field completed marines (or close to) quickly at a squad level. ATM with my overly complex paint job I'm doing for y table top minis I'm going for 5-6 coats on a 5 man squad per day while I'm not working (i do shift work so lots of days off in a row) so in 2-3 days i have a squad of 5 looking battle field ready. the other thing I'm doing with my marines is try to get the WHOLE army to a point, in my case the base amour colour, at once, then move to the next squad, in the mean time each squad stats to look like they belong on the battle field, and by changing minis your working on you don't get quite so burnt out, (sick of paining tactical marines? pick up that scout squad? or maby the termies?) my method wont get any marines 100% in a hurry but i am moving through my force at a decent rate. and it feels like I'm making a lot of progress, and that is enough to keep me actually progressing. Obliterator
Painting burnout is something that happens to the most of us at one point or another, especially if you're trying to paint lots of the same stuff (like your marine army). There are several options to counter/postpone this: Take a break from painting. If you're not in a hurry to get your army done, then switch to other aspects of the hobby, like converting new models or make some terrain. Or temporary enjoy another hobby altogether, that's OK too. The moment your hobby isn't relaxing you any more, you need to do something else. Switch painting jobs. Basecoat those tactical marines, then freehand on that almost finished dreadnought, right before you highlight those scouts that have been in that WIP drawer for ages. Paint different armies/color schemes. It can be refreshing to tackle other colors, and it gets you more armies <_< Instead of finishing one squad at a time, basecoat your entire army, and then finish up individual models when you feel like it. Your army will already look nice on the tabletop, and the amount of plastic grey/primer black legions will not be so overwhelming to look at. Razblood
I am really bad for this, I have a 3000ish point marine army that i've been "painting" for the past 10 years or so as well as a moderate renegade force and even some greenskins. But i've found that going through the hall of honour and work in progress boards seems to inspire me to at least do something with the horde of minis I have, maybe that would help you  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/206378-question-about-a-painting-funk/#findComment-2468821 Share on other sites

Panzerkopf
I don't know if you play other games but when I need to recharge my creative batteries, I start painting a different company's minis. When I get sick of painting super-detailed 28-32mm stuff I switch to quick and easy 15mm World War II. When the idea of painting another minuscule Nazi tank makes me want to puke, it's time to paint the shamelessly exposed panties on my Anima Tactics model. Have you tried painting in batches? like set ten guys up....base coat them all, by the time you've finished the last one.... the first one has dried. after that pick one part of the model to paint and repeat that with the rest of the batch for example the helmet of shoulder trims etc until the batch is finished. by doing it this way, your squads look way more coherent , and they get finished a lot quicker.
