The Eve of Battle

Hi guys!

Tomorrow night I am playing my first game of 40k in 13 years! I've been back in the hobby for about 9 months and finally have enough models ready to start playing properly. I have 3 other mates all in the same situation so we all thought we would do a little kill team tournament to familiarise ourselves with the rules before we start playing larger games.

I'm really excited about this so I thought I'd share it with you all. Anyway I will be playing against Tyranids (my arch nemisis), Space Wolves and Chaos demons. We have decided that we have to use the same list for all 3 battles, I originally decided to use a 6 man assault squad with plasma gun in a Razorback Transport fitted with an assault cannon. However it felt a little to OP to me and I thought my opponents prolly wouldn't be equipt to deal with an armoured threat, especially one with assault cannon goodness. So I decided to give them all a sporting chance and take something a little more balanced. I have decided to go for a 7 man Stern Guard squad with 2 missile launchers and Sergeant with a lightning claw. I'm going to give one of the missile launchers Relentless, a normal marine will get Feel no pain, and I'm tossing up giving the sergeant either Furious charge or counter charge.

I have no idea what my opponents are going to take, although I suspect the Space wolf player will take Grey hunters since they are so well equipt to deal with anything. I feel fairly confident that stern guard are versatile enough to deal with most threats, being veterans they should be able to hold there own if they are assaulted, but there true strength is going to be at long range so the longer I can keep my opponents away the better I will fair.

Does this seem like a good choice of squads for a Kill team game? Although we all just want to have some fun our group is insanely competative.

If anyone's interested I'll post a run down of how everything goes tomorrow

Hi Jorre,

Kill team is a lot of fun and the games go quickly so I'm sure you'll have good times ahead.

If I were you, I'd probably take furious charge on your Sergeant. The extra boost in initiative and strength is essential in the one-on-one combats that often characterize kill team games.

I'd also suggest that you take something other that Feel No Pain on your other man.

FNP on a single model is rarely a help in kill team since all it will take is a guy with a plasma gun or a missile launcher on the other team to say "I want to shoot at that model" and your special ability is no longer worth anything. If I were you, I'd suggest that you either give one of your guys Stealth to increase his cover save to 3+ (always handy in the cover rich environment of KT) or perhaps something like infiltrate. Giving infiltrate to your other missile launcher for instance means that you can set him up in cover in an advantageous side angle to create a crossfire with your mobile launcher.

Good Luck!

I was leaning towards Furious charge for the Sergeant but then I thought firing a rapid fire bolter is going to stop him from getting the charge most the time anyway, maybe counter charge would be better, still not sure on this one.

I was going to go FNP for a normal dude so that I could use Vengence rounds against the space wolves player the extra ap 3 would be nice but I didnt want to risk gets hot. Scout could be really usefull now that you mention it. With my long range forcing my opponents to treck from one side of the board to the other could be really usefull. I am about to head down to the game now, so you have given me plenty to think about on the way.

Thanks for the comments

Just a quick run down of the games we played.

First match had me facing my nemisis! The nids player, He took 3 Tyranid Warriors with Devourer's (I think) and a bucket load of little bugs that could only shoot 12 inches. He also had one Hive guard with that strength 8 shooting attack that does not need LOS. Thankfully he had absolutley nothing in his army that could penetrate ap3, so I wiped him out quickly. Krak missiles take down Tyranid warriors really easily. The extra range of Kraken rounds on sternguard allowed me to reduce his numbers from a range, by the time he got close enough the warriors where dead and he had lost synapse. It was game over at this point although 1 troublesome termigant managed to make 3 armour saves on a 6 in hand to hand with one of my veteran marines before wounding and killing my marine his power armour proving of no use!

Next had me up against the Chaos demons player, I really don't know much about demons and although I won the battle I learnt the hard way. Flamers are really nasty! Like the battle before I used range to my advantage, but the Flamers were able to close the gap really quickly and jumping over terrain allowed them to stay out of LOS longer. Fortunetly they are really weak in hand to hand and I was able to just charge them to stop them shooting then kill them when I could.

Last game was against wolves. 10 Grey hunters and a wolf guard vs my 7 Stern guard. He had numbers on his side but I had range. This was a real slug fest Bolters really suck at killing marines, and my inability to hit with my missile launchers ment that when he closed on me he still had 10 marines left 1 with a plasma gun. I decided to use 2 marines as Bait and moved them out into the open where I knew they would get charged, I positioned my Sergeant with lightning claw and furious charge in position to counter charge. He didn't take the bait! Instead opting to rapid fire 7 grey hunters at the 2 marines! I thought I was toast but every single shot either missed failed to wound or was saved by my power armour! I new I had the game when his rapid firing plasma gun rolled double 1s to hit against my missile launcher. My sternguard switched to Vengence rounds now that they where in range and unleashed a Rapid fire volley against the foolish wolves! 3 went down and the plasma gunner ate a rocket! Realising now that he was in range and completely outgunned he had only 1 option left, he had to charge. He 4 wolves jumped 3 the 3 closest marines, 1 of my veterans went down but they had drawn the wolves into charge range of my sergeat with lightning claw. He managed to duel assault 2 wolves and took them both out. The rest of the game involved Marines smacking the crap out of one another but there power armour keeping them safe untill my Sergeant was able to charge and put them down. He must of taken out 4 guys before they could swing back!

All in all was a really fun afternoon and I can't wait to play a real game. Stern Guard are a really awsome unit for kill team there wasn't a single thing safe from them in all 3 games I'll definetly be investing in a squad for my 1500+ point games!

Sounded like a blast! I've never done a Kill Point game like that. I've done 500 pt kill teams with force org restrictions and the "no armor and no monstrous creatures or anything with 3+ wounds" before. But this one sounded way funner!

Sanguinary Priest with Hand Flamer (Gonzalo Arrius) Blood Chalice (6" FC & FnP), Move Through Cover (for being an IC) [*Scout]

Scout Squad - 8 Scouts (Red Thirst, Infiltrate, Scout, Move Through Cover): 114-points

- 1 Scout Sergeant with Power Weapon (Rodrigo) [*Preferred Enemy]

- 1 Scout with BP&CCW (Faustus)

- 1 Scout with Missile Launcher (Acies) [*Relentless]

- 2 Scouts with Sniper Rifles (Nestor and "Baldo" Baldezareo)

Quick question. I no longer have my 4th edition 40k rules, is there another way to get the rules for Killz team? Kill team was always so awesome.

It's in the new-ish Battle Missions book - but it is very different. I loved the old Kill Team and was initially upset that this one is so different. But it remains a very fun way to play 40k.

I really like this list, The idea of giving the scouts a scouting Sanguinary Priest screams fun, although having to rely on 3 ballistic skill might be a bit of a shock to the system. Consider this list stolen for my next kill team night! With some minor modifications of course ;)

Hah yeah the BS-3 really makes every roll seem so 'high stakes!' I kinda like it...

At several points I thought about replacing the Sniper Rifles for more bolters (which are infinitely better in Kill team imo) but they have a real 'scare' factor... and they have made some good kills, like a land speeder with heavy-flamer that would have likely ended the game real quick. In general though, pinning is useless as every model is it's own unit, it only wounds on 4+ regardless of Toughness and you will likely only face T4 and T3 in KT games, and it's a 'heavy'... on the plus the range is good as is 'rending'. :)

Yeah my list is all about fun... but they have been doing good. Sisters with heavy flamers give me a tough time, and there is a Fire Dragon list that has beat me a few times, but I'm havin fun.
