CosmicCreations
Right well hello everybody and welcome to my first Tutorial, hope it goes ok! This is to show my process for painting my Ultramarines that can be found here People in the WIP thread asked me to do a Green marine or a Red Marine, however due to the fact that the WIP is about my Ultramarines I'm going to stick to the Blue colourscheme So...first things first...we need a Marine, here is mine... http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/Cosmic_Castaway2157/Ultramarines/Photo1397.jpg and on to the painting! 1) Basecoat the mini with chaos black, I have used the Chaos Black Spray paint but I'm sure just the potted paint will work just as well :) http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/Cosmic_Castaway2157/Ultramarines/Photo1397.jpg 2) With a medium sized brush drybrush the Marine with chainmail, this is a fairly liberal brushing as you can see http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/Cosmic_Castaway2157/Ultramarines/Photo1398.jpg 3) Apply the first wash of Asurmen Blue, once this is dry apply a second http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/Cosmic_Castaway2157/Ultramarines/Photo1402.jpg http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/Cosmic_Castaway2157/Ultramarines/Photo1404.jpg 4) Paint on a very slightly watered down layer of Enchanted Blue, being careful to leave the previous washed layers showing in the recesses http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/Cosmic_Castaway2157/Ultramarines/Photo1408.jpg 5) Add a highlight layer of pure Space Wolves Grey, this is painted onto the top edges of the marine such as the top of the greaves and the tops of the elbow guards http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/Cosmic_Castaway2157/Ultramarines/Photo1411.jpg 6) Apply a final wash of Asurmen Blue over the armour, this darkens the blue and the highlights http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/Cosmic_Castaway2157/Ultramarines/Photo1421.jpg And then just do the finishing touches :) You can of course your own techiques for these details or if you like mine here's a quick breakdown... Purity Seals- Bleached Bone- Gryphonne Sepia- Bleached Bone- Skull White highlight Purity Seal Wax- Blood Red- Baal Red wash- 1:1 Blood Red and Bleached Bone highlight- Bleached Bone final highlight Gold Trim- Shining Gold- Burnished Gold- Chainmail highlight- Mithril Silver final highlight Annnnddd I think thats it, the eyes on this mini were completely rushed as I was concentrating on the Armour, so thats why they're a bit :P For the Red Marine.... http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/Cosmic_Castaway2157/Ultramarines/STP66193.jpg Its the same process, but with of course different paints: Enchanted Blue= Blood Red Space Wolves Grey= Golden Yellow Asurmen Blue= Baal Red http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/Cosmic_Castaway2157/Ultramarines/Photo1427.jpg Hope this helps :) Daniel Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/206614-cosmics-ultramarine-recipe/ Share on other sites

Tottertates
Really nice, however when I tried doing red, it turned out really pinkish..? mine did too...i tried again with the Blood Red layer a bit thicker and now it looks the same as my other models (without the chainmail drybrushing) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/206614-cosmics-ultramarine-recipe/#findComment-2465536 Share on other sites
CosmicCreations
Tgtony and Tottertakes- hmmm I'm not sure why :) mine certainly didn't. Is it pinkish AFTER you've done the yellow highlight and the final Baal Red wash? tgtony
After the drybrush of chainmail, and the 2 red washes. For some reason its pinkish. Also, when layering on the blood red, theres no difference to my other models :< Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/206614-cosmics-ultramarine-recipe/#findComment-2466100 Share on other sites
Dave the Twisted
Has this been tried on a Rhino yet? I'm curious as to how that'd turn out. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/206614-cosmics-ultramarine-recipe/#findComment-2466171 Share on other sites

CosmicCreations
Well sorry guys I have no clue then :) , if they turn out the same as your other red marines then just stick to that, this was intended for Ultramarines and my red marine was just picked up on in the WIP section. Thanks for looking though and giving it a go :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/206614-cosmics-ultramarine-recipe/#findComment-2466375 Share on other sites

CorinoFan
with baal red I would assume that you should follow the viva metallica tutorial to a degree and putting baal red down, then a layer of devlan mud and then another layer of baal red Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/206614-cosmics-ultramarine-recipe/#findComment-2498779 Share on other sites
Firepower
Always fun to see someone rethink the basics, this technique seems to work a treat judging by your pics. Any idea how this would work with purple (roughly an Emperor's Children shade)? I'm separated from my paints til X-Mas so I can't fiddle with it myself. peetvanpeebles
I really loved the style of these so I gave it a go myself. The first figures I've painted in well over 10 years. Did I put too much wash on the final blue layer? Any hints or tips please  http://www.zen70509.zen.co.uk/sm1.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/206614-cosmics-ultramarine-recipe/#findComment-2811518 Share on other sites
roooooot
This has vastly improved my painting. It's faster than the way I was doing it before, and the results are soooooo much better. Thanks! CosmicCreations
Blimey I had completely forgotten about this tutorial, came as a shock when I just saw it again! @peetvanpeebles: Sorry for the late reply. They look really nice :D and I don't think you've put too much on the final wash, they look perfect as they are ;) @roooooot: Glad I could help :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/206614-cosmics-ultramarine-recipe/#findComment-2815686 Share on other sites
Hellrender
Just going to revive it again. Have you tried this on vehicles, and if so how did this turn out (if you have pics :D). i'm asking since i'm now just starting to paint my UM army, and it seems like a nice technique. CHeers Hi Hellrender, I never tried it on a vehicle I'm afraid so you'll have to find out for yourself, might be worth testing it on something similar to a Tanks if you have anything lying about. Dosjetka
I really have to try this out again. Last time's results were... quite messy with me going OTT with the wash ;) Ludovic Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/206614-cosmics-ultramarine-recipe/#findComment-2894586 Share on other sites
Hellrender
Yes, i tested it myself now, and applying the was thinly, but several times will work a lot better. The pooling up of wash makes it very ugly. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/206614-cosmics-ultramarine-recipe/#findComment-2894791 Share on other sites
