Assaulting the contents of dedicated transports

Can you assault the contents of a vehicle after wreaking/exploding it in the shooting phase, with the squad that destroyed the vehicle ? On pg 67 of the BRB it states , regarding the effects of results on passengers

Note: remember that all models in a single unit fire simultaneously, so a squad cannot take out a transport with its lascannon and then mow down the occupants with its bolters. However,if a transport is destoyed (either result) by a ranged attack, the unit that shot it may assault the now disembarked passengers, if it is allowed to assault according to the assault rules.

Now according to the assault rules on pg 33 just after Disallowed assaults

In addition to the above, a unit that fired in the shooting phase can only assault the unit that it shot at - it cannot assault a different unit to the one it previously shot at.

Transport vehicles are a seperate unit to the squad that is embarked inside.

 

Am I missing something or do these rules contradict each other, and have I been wrong about this rule all these years ?

The case of units inside a transport is listed as an exception to the general shooting -> assault rule, so a unit that blows up a transport via shooting can assault its occupants.

Note the page numbers. You are reading them in the wrong order.

 

read pg 33 first. then note the exception on pg 67.

 

Also, it does not matter if the transport is dedicated or not.

As long as you didn't use a heavy or rapid fire weapon to crack the transport you are good to go.

Unless you are rentless or have some other special rules that allows you to fire heavy weapon/rapid fire and charge :)
