@baxter im pretty sure chakra is fictional

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chakra

While not the most reliable source, chakra is based on actual beleiefs

And as for the samurai, they were horseback archers. Its just that they were more famous for being swordsmen, or at least more famous in western cultures as swordsmen.

@baxter im pretty sure chakra is fictional.....im pretty educated when i comes to samurai.....

Chakra isn't fictional it's just not related to Samurai. It's similar to chi energy and to put it simply is about the perception of and ability to interact with the energy flow in and around your body.

Secondly, quibbling over minor details is not constructive. As he mentioned chi, I understood the meaning of his post even though I also knew that chakra wasn't (explicitly, if you want to get into wider spirituality) related to Samurai.

Agreed. Instead of focusing on the Chi/Chakra being related to Samurai, we should instead focus on his ideas, like a marine mastering each martial art style as he works his way to the top. I think this would work fine, though I am still curious as to how Captains and Sergeants would work. As each company practices a different martial art, I would assume that Sergeants and Captains would all be from the 1st squad, having mastered each art, and then sent back to whichever company they showed the greatest affinity for? Say the Captain of the 4th company has mastered all of the chapter's styles, but he truly excels in the 4th company's style, and was thus promoted there from the 1st company? In this way the Captain who shows the most harmony with all styles, and doesn't let one style advance above the others is the one considered for Chapter Master status, as he has achieved balance of all the styles?

The thing is you can't seperate Martial Arts from it's inherent spiritual side. To do so equates to a chapter that is themed around boxing, which while a great sport has the depth of a tea spoon.

Having a chapter masters only qualification for the role is being able to kick peoples arses six ways to sunday using only his fists is a terrible way to pick a leader. Most leaders of men are not great personal warriors (unlike Space Marines) and are better at leading their men and defeating their enemies in the wider war.

Though Space Marines are unique I'd rather point to Lucius and Eidolon from the Emperors Children before and during the Heresy. Yes Eidolon was a higher rank, but he could hardly be compared to Lucius in terms of fighting skill. Mind you he couldn't really be commended as a good commander either so I'm standing on some rather thin ice here, but the point stands. Lucius also was a god-awful leader.

I think my point got sorta lost in translation a bit. I wasn't advocating removing spirituality. I was just suggesting that those among the highest ranks; ie: The most devout, capable, and masterful warriors, would all have reached levels of martial arts that would astound even their brother Astartes. And among this highest echelon, men who are leaders without peer, there would be some who stray towards a particular martial art. Those would be the Captains. All of the central command would be masterful tacticians and warriors, devout and pious followers, and would have attained near complete mastery of all parts of themselves, body, mind and spirit. However, among these great men, spiritual or not, the ones who can master each style without letting the style master them, would be the ones qualified to become Chapter Masters. Does that make sense? Its really late, so I dunno how that sounds...

I was merely advising we step away from the Chakra/Chi debate, as that was getting into specifics that might break into pointless argument. Spirituality is good, especially for martial artist Space Marines, defining it rigidly with something like Chi/Chakra is not so good for this IA.

I did this before I found out you had chosen to flesh out a GW chapter, and consequently had a chapter symbol already established.

Maybe you could still use this as an honour marking or something. It's just a quick and dirty ps job but I can clean it up if you actually want to use it.

Btw I do like the idea of armoured vambraces being used to block close combat attacks. Maybe they have a variant forearm armour that is extended and covers the outside of the wrist where there is usually soft armour.

I'd like to join up doing this, but I was thinking why not have each company be its own self supporting body with initiates who are just learning the arts. Assign each company a different type of martial arts. Assign everyone on this project A company, the Librarium, etc have them write the fluff, and then edit everything into one unified chapter.
