Finished models for my army: The Crucible (PIC HEAVY!)

Recommended Posts

Hi there! Just finished a Vindicator for The Crucible, my BA Successor Chapter.

There's a lot of firsts on this tank, first time I stipple such a big kit, first time with weathering powder...

Comments, criticism, questions and mild abuse all welcome.

Excellent. The scale and strength of the highlighting is perfect for the size of modell. You have achieved a rare thing -- making it look 'solid' and heavy and not merely something that is decorated with paint.

Actually, the mud was the easiest part, it's only Burnt Umber pigment by Andrea, first applied wet (mixing the pigment which has the consistency of dust with water) then lightly applying dry pigment over it before it dries. It actually looks like mud because... well, it IS mud, brown pigments are nothing more than fine earth, so when you mix it with water= instant mud.

@Isiah: Thanks mate, that was the effect I was looking for, for some reason, I feel tanks deserve a more realistic approach than power armored, genetically enhanced supersoldiers... I wonder why is that so... ;)

And a cookie goes to anyone who guess where I took the "license plate number" from! :)

i'm a fan of checkers... they're always awesome... the over all paint job on the vehicles are very nice too... i like the subtle shades/highlights... the mud i'm not too sure about... i mean the texture is awesome, it's very convincing that it's indeed mud, like you said since it is... but it's all monotone... a single color... there is no variation... no shades no highlights... or at least its not noticeable... btw, the over all paint job on the predator is a whole lot better than the vindicator... especially on the turret around the autocannon...

@ Somar: Cookie to you Sir! It's the license plate of the Chevrolet Impala appearing in Supernatural.

@ Louhnatic: Thanks for the input, man, that's what I need. I wasn't sure about the mud myself, but I find it difficult to shade and/or highlight it since if you apply humidity to it it would flow again... So inks or washes are not an option, maybe I could try (next time, these are varnished now) dry brushing a lighter shade of pigment over the first one before it dries...

I'm glad you like the predator best, since it's the second tank I painted, that means I'm improving! :(

@ Juzticar and Mithril Hound: thanks guys

The modes are both brilliant. I think the mud may work better with a little more weathering in terms of worn metal and chips. At the moment they look a little bit like someone has taken their newly painted tank and driven it through muddy ground. A few more areas or chipped paint and exhaust stains may help make the mud 'fit' more readily as the vehicle will look like it has seen more use. I know you've added some already (especially to the Vindicator) but maybe it is currently a little too subtle when compared to the mud. A little more wear and tear on the vehicle may make it seem more appropriate.

Does that make sense?

@Gillyfish: It does, I too thought of chipping and tearing them a bit more but:

1. I was afraid of overdoing it, I've seen a lot of otherwise brilliant paintjobs ruined (IMHO, of course) by way too much weathering

2. They both took hours and hours to complete and, frankly, I wanted to move on to some good ol' footsloggers

But yeah, I feel you, maybe next one will be more battered.

I'm back! No tanks, no minis this time, I took a break from my guys in red to paint a couple of buildings for my urban table:

@GLD: Thanks man, the rust is steady streaks of Hull Red (a reddish brown by Vallejo) highlighted with blazing orange. The Bastion itself is in fact stippled with Adeptus battlegrey/ Astronomican grey/ Deck tan/ White and washed with a mix of black and violet, then devlan mud, then baal red.

@Obliterator: I'm glad you like it, the weathering took almost the same time to do as painting everything else so...

@Nikolakhs: I know, man, it bothers me too, but the only way to have the dent in the plate upwards and outwards was to glue it that way. I suppose I could have filed it off, but lets just say it's a piece of the ceiling that fell and the defenders used it to fortify the ruin... ;)

Besides, that building is poorly built because I got it at the Spanish GD, you had half an hour to build something with the cities of death scenery kit and whatever you had at the end you kept for yourself. Cool initiative from the GW guys!

I'm afraid I'm going to have to request this thread be locked and/or destroyed, because quite frankly, you're making the rest of us look like total amateurs. :P

Really though, this is some exemplary stuff - I feel like I've been given an inside glimpse of Golden Daemon work.

Note to self: devour Killian Doyle's brain.

Od.
