Question on Painting SW

I'm working on my first pack and, as proper wolves, they have a fair amount of embellishments. My question is: do you paint each section of the model, i.e. armor, tails, face, hair, etc., to completion or do you undercoat(not base coat) the whole model before you move on to the next step?

It seems that if you complete the armor and move on to tail, you could mess up parts you've already finished. However, if you do each step on the whole model, you take longer, and maybe waste paint.

Any suggestions for a untested painter? I've got the pack base coated, and each marine's armor is undercoated. I'm following the steps from the SW section in "How to Paint Space Marines." I just don't know if I should finish undercoating everything or finish the armor and then move on?

after my black primer i pretty much paint all the armour the color i want, then do metal, then the secondary colors (read "black"), then my fur bits. the benifit is that you get the main color in the hard to reach areas (like the armpits) and in the end only have to touch up small areas the may have paint on them from, say, drybrushing fur. thats just me though.
