Junior Brother-Techmarines of the Storm Dragons

Recommended Posts

I got this idea quite a while ago after reading the Iron Snakes, dismal as it was; and a thread on B&C spurred me on further.

As a refresher, the Iron Snakes' tactical squads included a junior techmarine and an apothecary, which, if you think about it, makes a ton of sense. Whilst you are out there, it is awefully nice to have someone fix your Rhino or your armor, or patch that giant hole that someone punched through your chest. I decided that the Storm Dragons shall follow suit, and have a junior apothecary and a junior techmarine in each squad. These boys will count as regular boltermen, or, if necessary, can represent a unique marine. For example, my apothecaries will represent the Wolf Standard under the Codex:SW conventions - the presence of an apothecary inspires the brothers to fight just a bit harder in a pinch, knowing that their wounds will be patched or, at worst, their geneseed will be saved. The techmarines could represent the Mark of the Wolfen: instead of fighting with knives and bolt pistols, they attack with the servo arm, tearing bits out of the enemy and sending shocks through their armor. Of course, if you were trying to eff someone up with a glorified welding apparatus/hacking probe, the results could be awesome or merely adequate (D6+1 Rending). Yes, I'm aware that a servo arm normally counts as a power fist, but hey, these are JUNIOR techmarines we're talking about here.

Apothecaries are easy, if not cheap; but I already have one (the goal is three, or better yet four), and I won a couple of eBay auctions for apothecary bits on the cheap. So it should be not much of a challenge.

For the techmarines, I selected the following:

- Ravenwing Techmarine Head

- Assault Squad torso (for the straps)

- Devastator Sergeant Backpack

- Space Wolf legs with the thigh gubbin/strap and wolf tail on the greave (which I cut off and greenstuffed, and then covered with a purity seal)

- Ravenwing Techmarine Shoulder Pad

- Regular Shoulder Pad (natch)

- Trimmed-off triple missile from missile launcher sprue for the right hip - trimmed them to look like ports/cylinders/tubes on his hip

- Small three pouches for the right hip

- Regular bolter arms from DA sprue

- Square magazine from the terminator storm bolter

- Servo Arm from the Devastator Missile launcher sprue (I have a couple coming in from eBay, and thought that I had one on hand).

That's right. THOUGHT. Because I didn't, but I was DYING to build this sucker. Fortunately, I had a Ravenwing Landspeeder Sprue on hand (from the DA battleforce way back when). The sprue included some bits, bobs and gubbins that allowed me to fashion a passable servo arm. I plugged in a guitar string for a good measure as a cable, and greenstuffed the claw's grip. I SUCK at green stuffing, so don't judge me too harshly.

The result is below. Future iterations should look less rough because I will use the missile launcher servo arm. For now, this is the first of three, or maybe four: Junior Brother-Techmarine Belov. He is put together a touch rough, but I'm pretty sure a coat of primer and paint will cover my multitude of sins nicely. Behold:

UPDATE 04/03/2010

The Omnissiah blessed me with parts and motivation, and Junior Brother-Techmarine Rodin's armor was finally forged, allowing him to take to the field once again in the name of the Storm Dragons and Our Father whose Face is hidden from us.

Brother Rodin uses mostly the same parts as Brother Belov. For cables on his hip and arm, I dismembered a couple skull probes. The "port" on his leg is a chopped-off auspex handle. The servo-arm is from the devastator missile launcher kit. Brother Rodin also lost his left arm in battle, and had a bionic forged. While waiting for his new appendage to become fully functional, he tinkered with his trusty bolter, modifying the grip for extra stability, and rigging an optical targeter that feeds back to his armour's internal auspex. That's my fluffy explanation to the "wicked odd"bolter grip (it's the chopped-up bionic chainsword arm from the commander kit), I daresay it didn't turn out halfway bad.

Looking very good! Like the servo-arm!

Take care to cover up any Dark Angels iconography though.

Oh, and I spotted some mould lines here and there. I think you should shave them off. And nail them to a frisbee. And fling it over a rainbow.

Where did you see DA iconography? If you mean the mouth grille, it's too small to mess with... as for the sword on the bolter, not worried about it - it's neutral enough, some of my other boltermen have these too.

Also, besides the line on the magazine (spotted that one just now), did you see any more? I went over the pics and can't find any more.

Bloody hell, I think you've nailed it right there. Your explanation for their presence in the squad makes sense, and from the sound of it you've really thought about representing them with the right codex rules. I can't think of any arguments against the reasoning you've chosen, but then I'm not a Space Wolves player so I'm not up on their specific rules.

It looks like a solid plan though!

Nice model, too! I look forward to seeing a completed squad, junior apothecaries and techmarines included!

nice idea and conversion, I especially like the servo arm!

but the green stuff on the leg, where you cut the wolf tails away looks a little grainy to me. it might just be the picture, but if not, you should think about smoothing or redoing it.

Thank you brothers, I'll go over the mould lines one more time... OCD to the rescue, heh.

The GS on the leg looks a lot worse in the picture than it does in real life. 90% of it is not visible because it's covered with the purity seal, and the camera and flash made it look a lot worse than it is. I was horrified when I saw the pic, went back to the model and let out a sigh of relief...

Anyhow, I'm waiting with baited breath for the missile launcher bits to come in. I think for one of the next models I'll cut the loader arm and position it similarly to this one's arm, and for another I'll leave it folded.

  • 2 weeks later...

I should imagine most of us are kind of gobsmacked. Those could easily pass for fully-fledged Techmarines!

Fantastic work, I look forward to seeing them fully painted (although how anyone can paint things like that when they're assembled is a technique I'll never understand or master).

Nice use of the mechanicus pauldron too, I was dead tempted to get one of those myself.

Ach! That's the exact dilemma I'm having right now. I have two Long Fang squads in need of leaders, and after building these guys, I'm thinking to myself: do I want them to go into squads or do I want them to lead Long Fangs?

Heh, what a problem to have, right?
