An extra Special weapon OR a Wolf Guard pack leader

Depends on what else goes in the unit. I've got 3 units in Rhinos with lots of toys and a Pack Leader in each. I've found that the extra boost to Ld is very useful especially if I've won a combat and am in the open and about to get Tank Shocked multiple times. Or simply shot at.
Aye, 8 points more for a extra melee attack and better leadership sounds a fair trade off, though it depends whether you want to use a Thunder Hammer/Power Fist on him too. Better value for money giving him the Power Fist/weapon rather then a Grey Hunter simply due to the fact he has more attacks. Provided you have the points to spare of course. ^^

I am a newb, but I really like the increased Leadership (very important for Counter-Attack) as well as the Powerfist on the Guard, as the Guard has 2 base attacks with it, rather than the GH's 1. Also, a Powerfist is 5 points cheaper for a Wolf Guard than it is for a Grey Hunter.

Cost of GH with Powerfist along with free weapon for someone else? 40 points.

Cost of WG with Powerfist (50% more attacks on the charge or counter attack, 100% more if neither), Leadership 9 (fail Counterattack roll almost 50% less!) and combi-melta? 43 points. Losing a couple of potential shots with a melta is more than made up by the extra powerfist attack, and the much lower Counter-Attack or general Leadership fail rate (25% versus less than 14%).

Depends on which incarnation of my list I am using...

I have 2 main versions, one which uses "shooty" Grey Hunters (usually dual Plasma) and is supported by Land Speeders, Predators and Wolf Guard Terminators (usually 2 5 man unit with 3x Wolf Claw/Storm Bolter guys, a Chainfist/Storm Bolter guy and a Wolf Claw/Assault Cannon guy) as well as Njal, focuses more on out-maneuvering the opponent and whittling him down with firepower followed by a quick charge later in the game to mop up whatever survived.

The other version is the list I use when I am just screwing around with friends... 3 9 man units of Grey Hunters, with a Power Sword and Mark of the Wulfen, a unit of 10 Wolf Guard (5 Terminators as in the list above, 5 Power Armoured Wolf Guard with dual Power Fists/Thunder Hammers to join the Grey Hunters and Wolf Scouts), 2 7 man units of Wolf Scouts (4 standard Scouts, 2 Power Weapon Scouts and a Mark of the Wulfen scout), Vindicators and Njal.

All in all the first list is focused around a more reliable approach to warfare while the second lists tactics boil down to this:

RRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Allways 10 Grey Hunters with 2 plasma guns. Three full squads of those.

the other squad has 2 Melta Guns.

In General Wolf Guard are good,But I prefer fielding them as units of their own with either Drop Pods or Razorbacks.

Aye, 8 points more for a extra melee attack and better leadership

It actually is not 8 points more. A Powerfist and combi-melta is 3 points more, because the powerfist is cheaper on the Wolf Guard.

In that example, I was assuming the squad was not weilding a power fist. So it would litrally be 8 points more, though with addition of the power fist, the cost difference between them becomes much smaller.

Though, I guess thats pretty stupid reasoning on my part since every squad can do with a gut buster like that. XD

That being said, I will probably put a Wolf Guard in everyone of my squads, and put the rest in a drop pod to randomly come in to aid and inspire my Hunters to war!
