SW Battle Leaders

HERO

I run mine 2 ways, in larger games I run him with saga of the Hunter and Mark of the Wulfen and a combi melta. Dosent bother me that his arrival on the table is random. He's taken out quiet a few shooty units and back field commanders that way. Plus I like the imagry of a lone Wulfen charging out of the darknesss to kill a IG commander (stupid commands) or that juicy Tau Ethereal.

In games under 2k I run him instead of a Wolf Lord. Give him 2 Wolf Claws, Saga of the Warrior Born, Wolf Tooth Necklace and he leads a unit of Blood Claws

i use mine purely for fluff.

he represents gunnar red moon before he became wolf lord

wgbl with wolftooth+wolf tail+frost blade and storm shield=fun

for him as a wolf lord i field

wolf lord in terminator armour with thunder hammer and storm shield + wolftail and wolftooth with saga of the warrior born (read where he got his name then you will understand...)

Well seeing as my lists lately are Logan + Njal and a bunch of WG Terminators, no I don't often use them.

In my other lists, I use them at lower points values, usually in conjunction with a Rune Priest, I tend to go with a Frost Blade, Wolftooth Necklace and Meltabombs, fairly cheap, killy and adds the neccesary brunt to an assault.

Sadely no, when you factor in the cost of a WTN going 20 points more for 1 more wound and 1 more attack +1 leadership and additional gear options, the choice is clear.

Other than for fluff reason, meaning I would only run a WGBL in my list to avoid running two wolf lords, the WGBL has fallen along the lines of our Blood Claws; better choices available for the points.

With that said, the strength of our codex is there is always a place for a unit if you think dynamically enough,

Though I have not playtested the concept, the only time I have considered running a WGBL in my list is for the Saga of the Hunter option with some scouts. Using a 3 DP list and instead of OBEL, I would infiltrate and scout move them near where I plan to drop my pods. This would provide instant support to the exact spot I need.

A moderately outfitted WGBL costs more than a Wolf Priest, yet a Wolf Priest is almost always more useful. The WP has a Power Weapon, a +4 Invulnerable save built in plus the awesome Oath of War ability.

Still, I can see the WGBL being used in certain instances to save points versus a Wolf Lord. On a mount, or on a bike perhaps, as part of a small disruptive unit where his high initiative and extra attack is more valuable than the Wolf Priest's built in ability.

How could I forget this option! Expensive, but neat and potentially devastating idea.

Could a guy with Saga of the Hunter not join a wolf scouts group then and sneak up with them? I'm imaging a guy with a stormsheild catching all the slugs while the scouts act like really scary tacticals marines. Not as deadly as Grey Hunters, but when they randomly show up on a flank and flame/meta something they don't want to be charged with a smaller wolf lord to really ruin their day, I imagine the distraction caused with definately be worth it.

I was put off by the loss of the ability to take a Belt of Russ and therefore my counts as Wolf Guard Battle Leaders use a Wolf Lord profile, heck in my Heresy Great Company Grimnar (Counts As) is acting as my Wolf Lord's most trusted Wolf Guard (Though he definitely would be prime for becoming the next Wolf Lord with his skills)

Yeah, I wanted a hard nut TDA who also conveniently makes my Terminators troops. XD
