Thunderwolf Cavalry

Yeah, they first started appearing last year when some schmuck named Phil Kelly decided that Space Wolves having an Autocannon armed Leman Russ battle tank was too powerful, but that having 350lb genetically engineered super-men in 700lbs of nuclear powered heavy-metal plate armor riding around on feral, maingy dog was "teh ubar". (Sorry, was that my outside voice <_< )

They were probably always there, just there was not enough people left standing to talk about it. XD Or that they did not field them as proper units until 41K, apprently a lot of people started inventing more stuff around that timeline then any other time. XD

I don't have a problem with them though, if you live on a deathplanet like that with a equally crazy chapter, your bound to get a couple guys who experiment with riding some of the most fearsome beasts into combat, just so happened that the Thunder Wolf fit the quota.

Yes, they were newly introduced in last autumn's codex release. In fluff though almost nothing is new - new stuff is just ret-conned into always having been e.g. for the best part of a couple of decades of real world time Space Marines had a power armoured first company that was basically elite tacticals then a couple of years ago suddenly it turned out half of them had always been Vanguard Vets.

I think that their popularity on the tabletop gives a misleading impression of how common they are. The codex notes that they do not appear on any official force listing for the Space Wolves and that they deny the existence of such troops although unbeknown to them the Inquisition as a vid recording of a battle that appears to show such a unit. I don't think that they necessarily appear in every Great Company or even that they are part of any Great Company. The suggestion is that they are an elite upper echelon of the WolfGuard. Maybe like the Wolf Priests or Iron Priests they are an elite inner circle that is semi-independent and answerable only to the Great Wolf.

I think that despite Russ's disregard for orthodoxy the large proportion of terran recruits in the heresy era Legion means that the Thunderwolf Cavalry probably arose post-heresy but whether it was in M32 or M41 or anywhere in between we have no idea.

I agree with you on how common they are but disagree on command structure. Harald Deathwolf rides one and takes a "host" of the beasts into battle with them, also Canis Wolfborn is in Harald's Company as a Wolf guard. I think this indicates that they are taken at the Wolf Lord's discretion rather than the Great Wolf's.

What I meant was, when in the timeline were they first discovered to be useful in battle?

Dunno, there is absolutely no fluff on this near mythic cavalry that says. Really all you can do is make a best guess, it'll be just as good as anyone else's until GW say when it was formed (if they ever say that is).
