Terminator Priest

The Rune Priest comes with a 2+ armor save but you are still given the option of buying terminator armor for 20pts. What are you buying? A 5+ invuln? If that's the case, would you do it? For 25pts I could add a storm shield to one of his guards. I run my priest with wolf guard.

I thought RPs had a 3+ with the option of getting 2+/5+(Psy) for 20 pts, or 2+/5+(Inv) for 20 pts. It's the difference between only defending against psyker powers or anything in general at the cost of the model taking up two model slots in a LR variant, but not being allowed to go into a Rhino/Razorback.

It's mostly a difference in transport requirement, as far as I see it, but it can be important depending on how one makes the army.

Well, firstly the Rune Priest doesn't come with a 2+ Save, he comes with regular Power Armour that you can upgrade to either Runic Armour or Terminator Armour for the same 20 points.

Secondly, he is an Independent Character, so he fights close combat separately, which means giving one of your Wolf Guard a Storm Shied does nothing to help your Priest in a close combat.

Ok well I apologize for my epic fail on the 2+/3+ issue. But after looking into it I have come up with 2 more Q's.

If you bring more then 1 rune priest can you have more then 1 chooser? My 2 most regular opponents both infiltrate some nasty elite units so this would be a huge deal to me.

Also we are allowed 4 HQs but I don't know anyone that goes over the standard 2, does anyone here? I'm thinkin Logan and a pair of Rune priests at the least, and then adding in a Battle Leader or Wolf Priest. I havnt looked into these last 2 at all so am unsure. I realize bringing 4 Unique characters is impossible but the priests seem to make their points back well.

1) Yes, each priest can have a chooser.

2) I tend to go HQ light- you learned to do that with the old codex, trust me. As is, Ill sometimes bring three to large games for fun.

*nods* Valerian has the right of it.

Runic Armor would be alot more attractive if the 5++ it gave wasnt just against psychic powers.

Then I would see no point to TDA.

Now you have TDA bonuses plus you can get CCW/Pistol bonus and sweeping advance yeppie!

TDA allows pistol bonuses.

And frankly, TDA should be cheaper than it is right now. The way they tried balancing it by reducing weapon costs is very odd... it works, but its very odd.

TDA does allow pistol bonuses, but nobody in the game except for Njal (as far as I know) actually has a pistol in TDA. Every other unit choice, including regular Rune Priests have to trade in their Bolt Pistol along with Power Armour and the Grenades to get the TDA. I've always thought this was a little bit of a disappointing feature for using Terminator Armour - why wouldn't anybody just turn down the Storm Bolter and pick a Plasma Pistol instead (or just keep the Bolt Pistol). I'd usually really prefer the extra Attack in close combat to the small benefit that Storm Bolters give as a mediocre ranged weapon.

If you really think about it, all of the Space Marine Chapters really miss out on some great capability if they just used more of their Special and Heavy Weapons with Terminator Armour - getting the benefit of Relentless would be huge, and would justify an increased TDA cost. However, this is getting a bit off-topic, so...

Trust me, Njal's well worth his points, every game I have used him, he has made his points back and then some.

Yes, each Rune Priest has their own chooser if you upgrade them. You can have up to 4 effectively making the table a no-infiltrating area.

In 2500 point or higher games I take 4 HQs, Logan, Njal (in his Terminator Armour) and 2 Wolf Guard Battle Leaders in Terminator Armour... Or sometimes I just say screw it and take 4 Land Raiders instead of the Wolf Guard Battle Leaders.

I don't use Bjorn, but I have used Logan a few times. Generally I stick Njal with a larger squad of Terminators and walk him up. Between the 2+ save, 5++ save and Stormcaller the entire unit usually survives to get within 24" and by then Lord of Tempests is up to a good number and things get a lot more fun.

It's good to see some positive feedback on Njal for once. I see too many brethren dismissing him for points, unless you're really trying to be competitive, who cares in my eyes. He's no more pricey than any other great unique figure, and I've seen him deal some serious damage here.

I'd say the TDA or Runic armor is a personal choice, and as said above really comes down to your army composition. Each set of armor has it's benefits and drawback effects. Choose wisely, brother!

I was fighting an Eldar Army about a week ago.

It included Eldrad, an Autarch tooled with all manner of nasty toys, 2 Squads of Howling Banshees, some Guardian squads, some Dire Avengers and 3 Wraithlords.

Njal killed the Wraithlords with Jaws, Shut down Eldrads powers with his rune weapon, mopped the floor with some guardians courtesy of Murderous Hurricane and managed to routed the dire avengers when I got a 5 for lord of Tempests. Njal is a beast. Never doubt Njal.

I usually take my rune priest in termiantor armour, (I have got the old model and I like it) I found it quite useful, stick him with some long fangs, and alocate wounds to him, saves the long fangs. (plus my only power armoured rune priest, whilst loveingly converted, has a plasma pistol and that is not such a good choice for rune priests now).

You were lucky casting psychic powers on 3 dices or the Eldar player was a fool for not bringing Runes of Warding?

Oh he bought Runes of Warding. Doesn't make a difference with the way I roll for psychic tests. Anything else and I would lose so bad... try to mess with my Psykers and watch your head explode.

I made the wolf priest misatke. The model I made is by far the greatest thing I have ever done model wise and even paint wise (not a stretch) but the uses are very limited. I stick him with wolf claw termies now tho just to get re-rolls on everything

Well, at least Njall has 5+ invulnerable save from his TDA for those pesky 12+ roll peril tests.
