Rider's True Scale Dabblings.

@ EK: they are smoother than they look under the camera flash. but there are still a lot of little cleaning up bits to do, and the greave backs are certainly on that list, are the cuisses too. there are also little tiny flecks of plastic flash in places from where bits have been trimmed.

@ TS: there are a few other game systems using 30mm bases. eg: warmachine and at-43. i'm also consider ing some of the precast resin ones from the likes of these from scibor or these from dragonforge or there's a selection at microartstudio.

Looking good – the Captain/sergeant has come out very nicely.

So i beseech my fellow adept to point me in the correct direction on a couple of points.

1) Painting. I am looking to get a deeper, gritier blue than a lot of the brighter, more (dare i say) smurf-like blues that i see. baring in mind M30/31 is a rather grimdark place, with brother fighting brother and son rebelling against father, i want a darker feel to the models. Does anyone have any good deep blue recipes, or links?

I had the same thinking when I made my Ultramarines (plus the colour French Ultramarine is much darker and richer than Ultramarine blue), so I opted for this dark scheme:

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_w52z2ezBXbQ/S-lfGygyojI/AAAAAAAABzU/79-NMLeN3Uc/s800/Marine%20III%20Composite.jpg

It's a simple case of Necron Abyss highlighted up by adding Space Wolf Grey to the mix. I faff around with purple washes in the shadows and some smoking-highlights, but that's the bulk of it.

2) Company/Chapter markings. are there any guides on how the different companies within the chapters of the legion were identified? i'm favouring the gold/yellow option as it is the current company colour. but would the chapter be identified on the marines too? if so, how?

As far as I'm aware, there's nothing explaining pre-Heresy Ultramarine markings. I figured that Guilliman would have used his Legion as the testing ground for the Codex: Astartes, so I broadly ran with standard markings from Insignium Astartes; though I used the variant tactical/assault/devastator etc markings as a nod to them being 'antique'.

Other than that, I just wanted a good contrast with dark blue, so opted for gold/yellow throughout on the rims and trims. Yellow is the only accent colour other than blue used in the Horus Heresy artbooks, so I figured perhaps it ran across the whole legion. If you do go for a different accent colour, be sure to use a fairly light one, or your dark blue models might look a bit dingy.

I used quite a bit of Dheneb Stone and other light colours to add honour markings to further liven up the paint scheme. Here's an example.

3) Army list. Maybe better in the army list section, though it seems more for reviews than initial guidance....? I am aiming for a predominantly PA armoured force. Scouts in true scale present a problem with the legs. terminators i may tackle in the future, as i have a few thoughts on how to upscale them. vehicles and dreadnoughts, i suspect are currently going to be out the window...... SO with that in mind, can anyone suggest a 500point footslogger list that would be in keeping with heresy era Ultramarines?

I'd run with a nice basic force of three tactical squads and a Captain, personally

finally an update of bits and bobs.

first the next two marines now have torsos attached to legs!

basic torso shapes are done:

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/rider_in_black/GW/body1back.jpg

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/rider_in_black/GW/body2back.jpg

number 1 will get some replacement rivets along his "rib" line.

number 2 is an attempt to use plasticard for the thicker soles rather than GS. still needs pruned to shape.

both need cables/wires between chest plate and belt.

then there's a rough mock up of a terminator under way.

struggling with the legs. want them to look big chunky and slightly primative. there will be extra bulk on the thighs too, as well as an extended rear plate and extra groin plating.

torso was made wider, thicker and taller with the use of GS and plasticard.

seems to be about the right proportions. the gap between the leg joint ant the torso will need build up a little. probably need to widen the belt and extend the torso a little downwards.

as you'll see i'm aiming to get the terminator only slightly taller than a regular marine as far as head positioning goes. (ie: that extra 1mm spacer that's under the foot, plus a little in the torso/leg joint.) a marine is still the same size inside after all, so proprtionally the armour has to give the extra bulk and height, not the wearer.

Liking the idea you've got for bulking out the terminator armour and the layered shin guards look very PH too. I'm sure I've said it before, but I love terminator mini's (who doesn't?) so I'l be really interested to see how this one comes along :)

Well it's only been nearly TWO YEARS.... Oops.

In update though. This boy still needs a wee bit filling and cleaning but near as done.

El Capitan finally sees some paint.

First stage is a coat of mordian blue over black undercoat.

Followed by progressive dry brushing of Mordian up to UM and a final dry brush of UM/Skull white.

This evens out very nicely with a heavy wash of Asurmen blue.

This is then given a final couple of goings over with a Mordian/UM mix and a few edge highlights of UM/SW.

You can see the finished colour by clicking the Hall of Honour link in my sig and having a gander at the UM I did quickly for my kid in there.

Flames dude basic assembly done

Construction of bolter marine no.1 complete, just a few bits of cleaning up to do.

Tonight sees little progress. I've also been away the weekend at a wedding do that stifled work on these somewhat...

First the sholuder trim on flamer guy

He still needs a few details added to spruce him up and hide some of the GS work where it's not so good. Then a good clean up to get him sorted.

Next up is the beginnings of the next one:

In finest Rolf Harris mode: "Can you guess what it is yet?"

Here's the 3 so far together:

And finally a wee shot of the first three true scalers next to a plastic DA vet model for some
