BA take ICON gaming event!

Morticon

Recommended Posts

Hey guys - sorry ive been quiet over the last week. I journeyed 1000miles (literally) up country to play in a fairly big 40k gaming event held at ICON (the South African equivalent of GENCON).

There were 36 gamers in total - 1500 points and 5 games.

There were 4 BA generals there, and i'm happy to announce that of those 4 generals, 3 came in the top 3.

Yup. ;)

1st - BA

2nd - BA

3rd - BA

Way to represent!!

Second place went to a fellow board member, though I'm unaware of his handle - I met him IRL at the tourney.

Unbeknownst to me was the fact that ICON is traditionally a more "fun" tournament with less standard missions and more "out there" mission parameters. This being said however, is not to detract one bit from the very tough competition.

On top of it all the missions werent divulged until the day!

Mission 1: Modified KP.

HQ = 1

Elite= 1

Troops = 2

Fast/Heavy = 1/2

Additionally,

1: You had to destroy dedicated transports to get the KP.

2: You could only score a maximum of 10 points therefore if your opponent also scored 10, it would be a draw.

Mission 2: Exterminatus.

There was a 7.5" warp template in the middle of the board. At the end of your movement phase if you had a unit entirely in the template, you teleported them off the table. You could only teleport one unit a turn off this way.

The winner was the player who teleported the most untis off the board in the allocated 6 turns.

Additionally,

1: Every player turn, 2x S7 AP2 Ordnance shots came bolting down from the heavens. Always scattered 5d6 from the center.

Mission 3: Last Man Standing.

Every player's one choice of HQ model (and only that) was placed on the board (2xstandard boards) in random order. They must be more than 12" away from an enemy.

Then the player order was randomised.

1 pnt - 12th last -> 16th last

2 pnts - 7th last -> 11th last

3 pnts - 2nd last -> 6th last

4 pnts - Last Man Standing

Additionally:

1. EVERY model gets "killing blow". If any wound roll is a 6 (shootin or combat) the model being wounded just dies. Regardless of toughness, wounds or eternal warrior - they just die. No armour saves allowed.

2. Every model had one teleport token which they could use in 2 ways, either to teleport yourself, ->Deepstrikes anywhere or teleport an enemy to you -> always scatters 2d6.

**NOTE - I was VERY sceptical about this mission and thought it was a little stupid at first. It turned out to be the most fun we all had the tournament and did wonders to create a fun, enjoyable and social environment.

Mission 4: Cleanse renewed.

Table quarter capture.

1 pnt for Adjacent quarters.

2 pnt for enemy quarter

0 pnts for your quarter and

1 pnt for the center circle (the dead area in spearhead deployment).

Mission 5: 4 Way madness.

you get a 12" x 24" deployment - as do 3 other players. You are free to ally as you wish. Closest scoring unit to the center gets 3 pnts, second closest gets 2, 3rd closest gets 1 !

Those were the missions!

Battle Reports to follow!

And my Mephy in the botton middle - lasted till 3rd/4th last when another Mephy and I took each other out! (Though sadly due to a rules misinterpretation on the opponents part, I should have done him in a round earlier ;) oh well - at least it was fun).

Sadly I didnt take any pics of the gaming guys ;) Sorry About that - I always intend on doing it, but get so engrossed that I forget.

My list was worked out with some thoughts from the BA crowd and is originally found here -> Army List Forum Thread

HQ:

MEPHISTON 250

ELITE:

SANGUINARY PRIEST – Jump Pack, Power Weapon 90

FURIOSO w/ Blood Talons, Magna Grapple, Extra Armour, search light 156

Drop Pod 35

TROOPS:

TACTICAL SQUAD – 10 marines w/ Plasma cannon, Meltagun, Power Fist 205

Rhino 50

ASSAULT SQUAD- 8 marines w/ Meltagun, Power Fist 189

ASSAULT SQUAD- 5 marines w/ Meltagun, Power Weapon 125

Razorback – Twin Linked LasCannon 55

FAST ATTACK:

BAAL PREDATOR w/ Twin-Linked Assault Cannon, Heavy Bolter Side Sponsons 145

2 ATTACK BIKES w/ 2Multimeltas 100

2 ATTACK BIKES w/ 2Multimeltas 100

LIST OVERVIEW:

Overall, I was very happy with my list.

The missions were, for the most part, non-standard but the list was balanced enough to deal with almost any situation.

I do regret not having enough long range firepower, and although the bikers did help out a little bit, I find that when they can shoot they can also be shot at and then tended to draw lots of high strength, low AP shots.

I found that (to my surprise) my assaulters used DoA in 3 of the 4 games they were fielded in. I usually prefer to have them on the board from the start, but against the armies I was up against, and more so the missions we were playing, it just seemed more feasible to DoA. It worked excellently.

It was my first tourney without Corbs ;) But, I was happy using the PW/JP priest. The priest always went with the jumpers and as a result, gave them a bit more resiliency and also flexibility off the drop. The IC status allowed the priest to split off in 2 missions and attack separate targets. I really liked this.

Mephiston did not slay as much as he had done in the past, but he did serve his purpose. He drew inordinate amounts of firepower and provided necessary support.

My TAC squad underperformed a little, for the most part, although was the only reason I won my 4th game vs. a tough Tau opponent.

In retrospect I would have left out the magna grapple on the dread and gone with the Lascannon and combi plas on the TAC.

Speaking of dreads - the Furioso was a bit lackluster

Only in one game did he actually get into "real" combat.

He charged a bunch of chaos marines and wiped out 10 in a turn.

The rest of the times he podded in, took some random shots at stuff and either got blown up or casually plodded along to the enemy.

I saw frag cannons in action too - scary things. Scary, scary. Different play style from me- but still- scary. I think the dread will be first to go in my revised list.

So, overall - I will be making a few changes, but generally quite happy with the list and its performance.

BatReps soon. I promise!!!

Sounded like a blast!! Congrats and well represented, brother.

The missions sounded varied and fun. I dig your list- how do you like the 8 man assault squad? I've considered them in list building but not sure yet.

Did you combat squad the tacs? Or just use them as a midfield support/objective camper?

Cheers!

I'd prefer to be using a 10 man version of that with 2 MGs, however, whenever im in a pinch for points, the first thing to go is the melta and 2 guys! They still retain a bit of their killy. Ive been happy with them.

As for the TACs, I only combat squadded them in one game (the board quarter capture) but that won me the game - since I came on late and was able to split them in two and enter along my board edge claiming two areas.

I'll get on the batreps soon soon.

I dont think I mentioned it yet, but I won the event

Haha I gathered as much! Yeah I'm rebuilding my ancient marines over the course of the summer and...ugh. I need so many more assault marines (why oh why didn't I buy more jump packs as a whee child?!)

Hmm, I'm actually a unhappy if BA carried the event so completely. Hopefully that's just due to people being unprepared for them, and not that they're too good. I've been skeptical about all those claims that they're overpowered, but tourney results like this could make me wonder.

So how did you place, Mort?

Hmmm, looks Like I'll have to get out of the shadows now... That 2nd place was me.

I've been following the BA forums here for about 6 months and have seen and read interesting conversations. I was very much surprised to meet MORTICON at the ICON event. It was my 1st year playing there as I'm pretty new to wargaming. I've only played for about 9 months now.

I have to say the missions, and games were hectic but extremely fun.

Morticon was an awesome opponent (I played him twice, Game 2 & Game 5) and that last game had me thinking all kinds of crazyness. But in the end I think it played out well, and a well deserved win goes to you MORTICON.

The rest of the results was very close. There was at least 4 other players 1 point behind us.I checked the scores, if MORTICON would have won that last game then it would have been only 1 BA in the top three...

Anyway, my take on the tournament was that Game 2 went to whoever had 1st turn and game 5 went to whoever was able to keep the most units alive during the 1st turn, becasue 4 players were out to get the center objective and only the closest could get the 3pointer.

I won, matey.

Wildfire, It was largely due to opponents not meta-gaming to factor in the BA - and Mephiston.

The boards lacked cover in a BIG way. There were huge areas of open land where one of the top BA lists should have been largely taken out if meta-ed accordingly.

The most obvious factor in the mix however was Mephiston. All of the top 3 lists had him. And very few players thought about countering him.

Also, the missions were such that scoring units were not of necessity. So, elite lists were at quite an advantage!

Additionally, as you'll see in the batreps shortly, all three of us got quite lucky in game 3!

Game 1:

I was up against a mech IG player.

Command Squad- lc

3x 10 man Vets with bling.

2x Chimeras

1x Vendetta

1x Demolisher (plas sponson)

1x Leman Russ (plas sponson)

2x Bassies - closed top.

We rolled off and luckily I got first turn.

I stuck the RAS into reserve to strike down with the Priest.

The opponent was no dupe and realised that I would probably inflict decent damage with my dread and some of my first turn shooting if he deployed on the board. So, he stuck everything off the board (to come in on first turn ala: Dawn of War).

I had to spread out my forces quite a bit since I didnt know which flank he would take.

Mephy, and the tacs and the bikers pushed through the center. The dread came down on the left supported by the razor..

My opponent then came in on the right hand side to avoid the dread.

Luckily his shooting was largely ineffective thanks to smoke or poor scatter rolls.

From this point there was really nothing he could do. He had one more turn that would be make or break.

With the BA speed and firepower I was able to neutralise his vendetta and get on top of him in no time.

The game ended in just over an hour with him not getting a 5th turn thanks to having no units left. Mephiston went down a bit cheaply, but did manage to suck up a lot of firepower.

My opponent had killed 1/2 a point worth of stuff to my 10points.

Game2.

As Ron1n mentioned, sadly this mission was a bit imba ;)

My opponent was Ron1n - a great, fun and chilled opponent playing this ->

Mephy

Corbs

Furioso- magna, fragcannon

Pod

Furioso- magna, fragcannon

Pod

5 Terms - 3 hammers, 2LC

Crusader - MM

5 RAS

Razor - TLLC

5 RAS

Razor - TLLC

The mission was a GREAT concept that could have been made awesome with just a different deployment zone.

The deployment (18" up) and pushback (24") meant that the player that went first had a HUGE advantage.

I got first turn ><;

I rushed up trying to block as much of the teleport template as possible.

My rhino sped up, unloaded and whoosh went my tac squad into the warp.

For the rest of the game I had to fight off the oncoming mephy, termies and dreadies, whilst simultaneously getting weaker by zapping away units and trying to prevent him from zapping away his.

Thanks to the dready and the rhino chassis, I managed to keep him off the template for the first 3 or 4 turns.

This was the only game in which I placed my jumpy RAS on the board.

His termies eventually charged my dready, but that combat lasted for quite a while. I also got a bit lucky when he lost a combat with mephy involved (his) and his mephy broke! His mephy was involved in combat with the dread and his terms, while my RAS assaulted the termies only. Quite lucky I think! Also helped out by the fact that my mephy was providing psychic hood help.

It was a crazy hard fought battle that could have gone either way since the conundrum of making yourself weaker and teleporting your units off, vs. fighting his is TOUGH!

In the end I had managed to get 4 units out of a possible 6 away from the planet. Ron1n managed to get 2, unfortunately needing to commit too much to break holes in the wall I had provided.

Those frag cannons however are scary beasts!!! Somthing to consider in the future!

Game 3 - HQ free for all.

I initially thought this game would be dumb.

I was initially a bit unhappy I had flown up all the way and then got stuck with this type of mission. Hooooooowever, it turned out to be the most fun game of the tourney.

It was social, enjoyable and really good, honest fun.

The whole vibe of it was really just nice.

After the arduous deployment (random drawn names), we then went through the arduous first turn (random drawn names).

Ron1n and I had wound up placing quite close together since we were both eying a piece of terrain. Since mephy had no invuln save he was ESPECIALLY vulnerable to the "killing blow" special rule. We both needed to hug what little cover there was. Additionally, us being the same character meant that if we charged each other it was like mutually assured destruction. There was a C'tan nearby too ! But since it was the deceiver it meant that he could leave combat whenever he wanted. This also meant that we were not likely to be attacking each other.

As a result by location alone we kinda formed the first "alliance" as it were. Other players quickly caught on to this and soon cliques of HQs formed.

Only the outskirt HQs started getting flak.

Since I was a complete unknown as far as that gaming community was concerned, I was left largely unmolested for most of the game. I didnt go out of my way to attack anyone either.

After a while, tournament organisers ruled that unless we attacked nearby players with at least a shooting attack, we would have to make an LD check that if we failed, we'd die. This was as a result of too many players just chilling out.

Eventually I had to take a shot at poor Ron1n. Luckily it wasnt a 6!! He returned the favour a few turns later. After that we had to make off into the distance to start killing others.

By this time the crowd had thinned quite considerably and after I did a Slaaneshi demon prince in, I made off towards one of the other Mephiston models! (Not Ron1ns).

He eventually charged me, but had used 2 of his powers on attempting to get wings (which i had blocked). In that turn, I managed to save a force weapon power after casting rage twice.

However, bit of a bummer came when my opponent refused to believe that mephy (or any libby) can cast their powers each player turn and kicked up a bit of a stink after my Force Weapon rolls went through after he failed to kill my mephy. The tourney judge, not wanting to take sides ordered a roll off, and the opponent won. ;) In the next turn we killed each other.

This left just two HQ models on the board- Ron1ns and a Tau player. The Tau player then jumped around a corner unloaded with a bunch of dice and obviously rolled a "6" - killing blow and no inv. save meant Tau took it - but still left Ron1n, myself and the other BA player with 3 points.

I was a bit bummed with the ruling, but the player did come to me the following day and offer an apology after he had taken the time to re-read all the rules...so..all good!

Game 4

Tau -

2x Suited HQs with drones

2x3 Suits - lots of bling

2x12 Fire Warriors in Devil Fish with bling

1x10 Pathfinders in Devil Fish

1x Rail Head with blnig

1x3 Broadsides

This was one of the tougher games I had to play. It was against the winner of the Last Man Standing match.

His tau were shooty as all hell and he had won the roll off.

I decided to deploy into reserve, outflank the baal and DoA the jumpers.

Sadly for me, my reserve rolls were almost responsible for my near loss.

My models pushed forward when they could from the far right flank, since he was bottled up in his quadrant. First the dready, then the bikers. I managed to weather a lot of the firepower, but definitely not all. His position of the broadsides also allowed me some cover when I came from the flank.

My jumpers came in on the center and hugged the cover in the middle of the board, not exposing themselves from the outset. In fact I spent two turns jsut chilling in cover, since I knew that there werent enough targets to saturate my enemy with for them to get away with jumping out into the open. However, I did risk sending my lone priest off to attack the pathfinders since he would have had a better DT roll. I managed to get the result needed and took them out of the game in two turns of fighting, at which point I moved on to the broadsides.

By the time the 4th turn rolled around I had to move out a bit. And the patience game had payed off - he had moved his fireknives out to get more plasma shots on me, allowing me a charge with my jumpers.

My TAC squad also came on quite late and i had to split into combat squads, the sarge taking the open flank on the right that mephy was fighting on and the rhino and heavy weapon and special weapon zooming up to try claim the top left.

My opponent played a really smart and tactical game and tried to contest the quadrants where he could. Luckily i was able to shut down the contesting units where I could and in the end, managed to claim 2 areas whilst his troops were contesting an area the tac squad was holding on to.

So in the end, 2-0 to me!

Really great, tactical and enjoyable game.

Game 5 - 4 Way Hell.

The final game saw me pitted in a 4-way no holds barred fight with 2 other BA players (one of which was Ron1n) and a Chaos player.

Their lists were as follows:

Chaos:

Slaneshi Winged Prince

Greater Daemon

2x10 Chaos Marines with plasma, fist and MoK in Rhinos

3x Oblits

2x Defilers with lots of CCWs.

BA:

Mephy

Priest- pw

2x 5 RAS - PW, MG

Razorbacks - TLLC

1x 5 RAS - PF, MG

Razorback - TLLC

Baal - FSC, HB

Pred - TLLC, HB

Vindy

Typhoon

Typhoon

The Mission:

This was sadly the most unpleasant game of 40k ive ever played.

Not because of the players- they were all great. Polite, friendly, cool - for the most part :D (apart from one instance that rubbed me up the wrong way a bit).

However 40k should not in any form, especially not at tournament level, be played like this.

It was like survivor meets 40k. There was an element of unease and treachery that is not conducive to a good, happy social feeling that gaming should bring.

I dont ever want to feel like crap for shooting at my opponent. I dont feel I should (or my opponents should) ever feel bad for wanting to win or doing what they could to play their best - and sadly thats all this mission did.

Ron1n and the other BA player were from the same club (i think) so, naturally you dont wanna dink on your buddy.

The other player was one chaos player amidst 3 BA players- poor bastard!!

And theres me, who is currently in the lead points wise. ie: a big fat target.

What happened in the game, I was on the same side of the board as Ron1n.

The other BA and the Chaos player on the other side.

Now, Ron1n had to set up first. He deployed his three tanks. At this point, I wanted to reserve everything. This would have allowed me to come in late game after the fighting. However, I figured that if Ron1n deployed, he would need some support and offered to lend it to him.

At that point, already, the other BA player and the Chaos player were questioning us on whether or not we had formed an alliance.

I felt kinda uneasy, cause, what do you say? yanno? I said, "all i need is two points". Im happy for the other player (Ron1n) to take 3 (ie: closest) and we kept playing.

In my turn, i sent my dreadnought down towards the chaos player to support Ron1n's dread. I wanted to send it down on the other BA players side, cause that was about to tear me a new one.

I then sped off an attack bike squad to support Ron1ns side. At which point the master of chaos starts weaving his deceit. He started telling my "teammate" that I was doing that to set up a backstab late game and from that point kept pushing him about how i was gonna turn on him at the last minute.

I then had to make a choice with one or two other units and had to fire on the other BA player. I couldnt not fire, cause soon he would be on me. I apologised (which I find is weird in itself) and opened fire- missing with everything.

In his turn, he apologised back (again- why make us play a game we feel crap to play?) he returned fire, blew up my razor, and broke both bike squads. :P nice.

Anyway...the turns went on with me fighting on two fronts - the chaos, and the BA. Ron1n only fought the Chaos guy, while the other BA player only fought me.

The talon dread managed to make it into combat with 10 chaos marines and just ate through them. Yummy.

However, i was taking a solid beating from the other BA list over the next few turns.

I was playing conservatively with what little I had left. In the end(by 4th turn, his mephiston got into the ranks. It was do or die time. I needed Ron1n to offer the support of his units and take 3 wounds off of Mephy to enable me to finish him off.

Sadly, the amount of talk that the chaos player spun started turning poor Ron1n.

It was at that crucial point where I needed his help. It was also the point at which the other BA player figured out I was way in the lead and with even 1 point would probably equal them (and maybe win on battle points).

So, Ron1n diced off for who he would shoot at, and sadly it was me :(

In my turn straight after his turn about I had to lay it down. I asked him if the following turn, would he support me, or would he dice off or shoot me again.

At this point I think i was visibly miffed. Which added to the whole unpleasant feeling of the last mish.

My buddy said that I shouldnt have been surprised people turned on me- as I should have walked into that last mission thinking "the only way these guys can win in this tourney is to backstab me" since i was leading at the moment. That kinda made me feel better about the whole debarcle as it was part of the game- just not what I felt 40k should be about.

Anyway, so at that point, Ron1n couldnt give a straight answer so I did what I thought I could- which was to do as much damage to the others as possible and take em out of the game.

I ignored all of the other BA players stuff, even though he was the most immediate threat, I knew I would have just been attacked by Ron1n the turn after. So, I went after his remaining troops - him and the evil, evil chaos players.

Luckily his land raider kept him safe, and I was unable to get to that last squad. I did manage to help kill the Chaos player and take him out of the game.

The game ended with my last troop squad being shot up and failing their LD check falling off the board leaving Ron1n and the other BA player to take 1st and 2nd - giving them both 13 game points!

SO!!

As mentioned above, the final tourney points were 13 to Ron1n and the other BA and then 12 to me.

As luck would have it, the painting points were what pushed me up to their level.

I got one extra point for my efforts on my Termy Sarge Lorenzo that I had submitted !! This pushed me to 15- equal with Ron1n and other BA.

From that part I won on objective points!! (having 16, Ron1n having 13 and other BA having 12).

So, I really have Termy Sarg Lorenzo to thank for my victory! Well...that and those objective points :D

I'll get a pic of him up soon !

Thanks for reading.

Good reps, grats on the win!

I agree, the TO for your event needs to be punched... two of those missions were complete bull. I guess it was a way to give "weaker" armies a chance, but a 4 way FFA in a tourney? ew. I could see maybe 2v2 or something.

To be fair, I think they were aiming for something social. And as mentioned, the HQ bash, although a bit of nonsense was some of the most fun 40k i've ever played.

As for the 4way, I definitely think it should have been 2vs2!!!

I didnt mention that there was a scheduled 6th game. It didnt count for points however. The aim was for you to challenge a player you had not yet played but would like to play.

You could choose whichever mission you wanted to against whoever you wanted to. It was a great concept to end the tourney. (Sadly we ran out of time).

So, although I didnt enjoy that last mish (5) I think the aim of the tournament was to create a more fun, enjoyable atmosphere of social and competitive gaming for the players.

In that respect I think it was a pretty good job. (well- apart from the whole me not enjoying it part  hahaha)

Congratulations on the win Morticon. Well done.

This reminds me... have you found your win/loss ratio improved with the new dex, or still lagging when compared with the old PDF version?

Mine has turned around, a horrendous start with the new dex followed by a good run lately. (2-4-2 over my first 8 games, 7-2-0 since).

That's great news lads! Bodes well for my re-entry into the BA (my original army way back before collecting a tonne of DA). I look forward to hearing more of your exploits on the battlefields ;)

Some interesting missions there. That last might have been better with a team vs. team, perhaps the 1st and 4th vs. 2nd and 3rd. Having tried numerous times to play 40k with more than 2 players, I've come to the conclusion that the best you can hope for is a mediocre experiance.

Wildfire- a buddy suggested exactly the same thing. With exactly the same combination.

You know alternatively, they could have even paired the highest and lowest with next highest and next lowest as set teams.

But, either way - definite teams would have been better.
