Suffer not the Alien to Live

Being obsolete is simply a state of mind. Some of us DH/WH players have been obsolete for some time, and have been arguing for some time about some silly GW PDF update... 4th or 5th edition, one shall not suffer the Alien to Live!!!

Wrong. The DH and WH codices are still legal to play, the 4th edition Marine codex isn't. That is a pretty major difference, not just something that can be dismissed as a mere state of mind.

That said, for people who don't mind playing with an outdated, illegal codex, I would agree with Legatus's interpretation of the rule. It specifically lists which alien races you can take it for, and which you can't. It doesn't make sense that Tau and Necrons are left out, but we play by the rules GW makes, not the ones we think would be best.

I think the term 'illegal' is a little strong as there are indeed folks out there who do still play using 4th ed rules. Obselete is probably a better term.

That does not make the Codex less 'illegal'. It would not be accepted in tournaments, as it has been replaced by a new 'official' army list for Codex adherent Space Marines. What rules friends use among themselves is of course entirely up to them.

At the time the rule had been written, it did. Back in 4th Edition the 'Preferred Enemy' rule would let your units hit that enemy type models on a 3+, no matter their Weapon Skill. But there were hardly any Tau units with more than WS 2 or WS 3, so Marines would normally hit them on 3+ anyway. It would have helped only against Kroot units.

Necrons are not included because Necrons only just appeared on the galactic stage, and there are usually not a lot many survivors after encounters with them. With Orks and Eldar you can have Chapters with 10,000 years of history of fighting them. With Tyranids it is not that long of a history, but at least 250 years, and the encounters with them are usually quite bloody, which has motivated Imperial forces to try to adapt to them.
