Raven Guard stuff for Space Wolves?

Greetings Wolf Brothers,

Just to fill you in on Black Templars and myself, one of the reasons I picked BT was for the kit-bashing potential.

Besides Vanilla and dedicated BT stuff, I use:

Forge World goodies

DA hoods and robes

SW pelts and youthful bare heads (for Neophytes) and Wolf Guard Terminators

Berzerker helmet, chain axes and running legs

Chaos Marine weapons, Terminator things

Morning stars from Empire flagellants and Skaven monks

Heaps of knightly stuff from Empire and Bretonnia

Chaos Fantasy helmets and Warrior bodies and cloaks ~ à la Darkseer's blog

+++

Well once you've got the fever, you see it in other things too :cuss

Besides advocating Fantasy Chaos and Dwarf elements for SW, I also think some RG stuff would work too.

In Norse mythology, Ravens were significant. Hugin and Munin were some of Odins helpers.

Njal Stormcaller uses the raven in both of his model editions.

You could kit-bash the RG Forge World stuff to compose a squad of Grey Hunters. They could be the Runepriest's squad, and their transport could have the RG doors, etc. to personalise them.

What do you think?

Now that is a novel idea, a Rune Priest bodyguard type of pack with the 'mystical symbol of the raven'. Sounds completely feasible to me. Just make sure your Rune Priest has raven iconography to seal the link between him and the GH pack. It should look cool.

I have twin WGBLs- Hunin and Munnin. I used the shoulderpad with the eagle fromt he SM commander sprue, and the jump packs from the sanguinairy gaurd sprue, and the rest was SW bitz. Turned out rather well I think .

As for a GH squad... you certainly could do that if you wanted to. A TH sounds more likely, as it flies- but the chances for some cool conversions means you can probly ignore that just for how awesome itll look in the end.

Still, I think WG are the way to go for any troops involved.

The GH squad gives me an idea. I kinda want to make an honour guard of infantry for the Runepriests, like the ones shown in White Dwarf waaay back when the new Dark Angels line came out. They had four Wolf Guard using the robe-y bitz from Dark Angels. The robes were painted black, given a bit of GS fur, and had white runes painted on them.

Since my company has been away from the Fang for so long, keeping the Rune Priests kicking might become a priority, especially given their abilities.

With the new rules, I'd stick the Priest with Grey Hunters, since I can't always guarantee the size of my Wolf Guard squads.

I had a very similar idea myself, and intend to paint my Rune Priest and his crew in a black scheme with dark purple/blue highlights and accents. I saw something on national geographic about documented instances, in which a pack of wolves and group of ravens will fall into an arangment whereby the ravens, who enjoy meat, lead the pack to prey, where they bring it down and allow the ravens in after them.

I've also heard that Alaska's indegenoious people have documented this sort or reletionship and that the wolf and raven are powerful symbols within their culture and mythos.

Additionally, I know that whitewolf has a series of games that center around werewolves and that there is a race of shifters called Corax that take raven form. I like this interaction, the same way I enjoy the werewolf undertones I intend to flavor my army with.

Be sure to post pics if anybody's got any mini's converted or painted up. I'd love to see. It's always a pleasure to find people out there on the same page.

My rune priest conversions also use eagle bits from the space wolf commander sprue painted black to "ravenize" them. I use the raven motif to symbolize the Eyes of the Allfather, which I usually associate with rune priests, but this symbol could also easily apply to any recon forces or even something else.

I would love to make proper use of some dark angels cloaks and hoods as well. The idea of having a robed squad of bodyguards for a rune priest sounds like a good one. It could even consist of acolytes who are potential rune priests themselves, which would be very appropriate for a master of the runes, who might act as a mentor for the next generation of psychic warriors.

A bit off topic but still related, I bought and made a "Sanguinary Wolf Guard Pack"; after actually pricing them out (approx 550 pts. for Lord and 4 buddies) I began floating an idea around making a Gray Raven Guard army. I have more Marines than I will ever need for 1 Chapter (120+) and at least half are unpainted. The Daunting prospect is buying more vehicles (don't officially "have to", but do like seeing a uniform army). I say have at it!

Cheers,
