The Spears of Ultramar

koran

Recommended Posts

Im mostly working on a Tau army right now but I wanted something to work on as a bit of a break now and again.

I took some time choosing a chapter but in the back of my mind I have always really liked the background of tyranid hunters.... So why not a whole chapter of tyranid hunters?

Im still undecided on the name.... Spear of Ultramar, Spear of Macragge, Spear of Cassius (the chapter founder), Sons of Cassius? Any input would be good....

I have some background going but its not 100% ready yet so I wont go into that too much but the chapter was set up after the tyranic wars at the request of Chaplain Cassius and re-enforced by the Ordo Xenos. Usually for such a recent chapter their first company is well equipped with terminator armour due to the Inquisitions patronage.

So I wanted to do the 1st company of this chapter. Lots of terminators and the elite of the chapter.

Now I have a few issues with the current terminator armour, mostly to do with the legs. 1) They are too short. 2) They are FAR too thin for a marines leg. 3) Although they are well armoured on the front the back isnt. Now this last one makes sense from the background, terminators are mostly used in boarding actions in the background so need the armour to the front, not behind.

The last two problems were solved together by thickening out the legs. I personally think this makes them look more sturdy and armoured and has just about enough room for a marines legs to go inside. I then cut them at the shin and thigh to make them a little longer. This has given me the terminator MkIV

I am also planning on making an "experimental" MkV for the 1st company captain and maybe one or two other models if I like the finished terminators.

Lastly one of the arms. Its a bit hard to make out the detail but the majority of the terminators will be armed with the chapters weapons of choice, the spear. Or in this case a power spear.

That looks great!!!

Keep it going and more pics! I'm working on 15 terminators right now myself, and that demands a lot of green stuffing, right now its just a nightmare... But you have something really great conversion work.

Updates!!!

Ive had a bit of time free and I managed to get the terminator painted up.

I decided to go for NMM as it allows a bit more shine. And a rusted industrial base as it contrasted nicely with the blue without being mud, why would marines be fighting in a muddy field anyways? Its not the way they fight.

Hope you like him:

ok this model is awesome. :)

and instead of struggling with a capter name maybe made special deathwatch crusade (called the Spears of Ultramar) lead by Cassius and/or a deathwatch inquisitor.

The model is fantastic koran, top notch painting. The only thing is that he looks exactly like an ultramrine, especially with all the "u" logos all over him and whatnot. timy sam's suggestion seems pretty good though.

aaand if you don't mind, how did you paint him? (specifically the nmm and blue)

The NMM follows the gold in white dwarf around the blood angel release for painting the sanguinor. The silver follows the same theory but substituting colours for grey shades and any purple/red shades for blue shades instead. I would make a tutorial but it would replicate whats in white dwarf and I dont know if that is allowed.

The blue is basically moving from regal through to ultramarine and line highlight with ultramarine blue plus a little white. Then a slightly chipped effect using charadon granite. I then paint the larger gouges with regal blue mixed with black and another line highlight under the gouges. This was actually done before the text was added to the model, something I might change in future.... But Im worried that this might interrupt the text too much and make it look odd. Hope that helps.

The chapter symbol is based off the ultramarine symbol. I wanted to replicate the "U" in the symbol to show the link and tried various symbols trying to incorporate the inquisition "I" but couldnt find anything I was happy with. In the end I went with the U crowned by five golden rivet type things. These actually represent the five high librarians that are very important in the chapter known as the Coven. I will have to write out the background soon and all will become clear  Im still trying to make an army list Im happy with and this is taking priority as it determines what I have to model.

Keep tuned for more updates ;)

The shield was originally made of plasticard and greenstuff but I have cast it so I can repreduce them more easily.... Because of how thin it is I found a few air bubbles crop up, hence the green stuff. The curve was made by bending it around something and gluing two sheets of plasticard (half the thinkness of what I wanted) together so the glue holds the curve. Hope that helps.

I like him. But I would suggest some more highlighting on the edges of the armor.

His armor looks a bit soft right now. It's probably because you replaced hard edges with different green stuff edges.

It's not bad green stuffing work. But you should make highlights on the edges, or as if there were edges (if there aren't).

You're plasticard stuff looks really nice. You might get better results by using plasticard on the shins guards instead of GS. ;)

ow the first thing I should say is that I had a friend tell me off for putting a helmet on this guy. I have to agree, if I had 20 or so different marine heads then they would all be bare but without that as an option (I dont think there are even that many bare marine heads) some have to be helmeted.

That aside I quite enjoyed posing this guy and deciding on how to do the spear. In the end Im pretty happy with the over head, stabby kind of position. I was thinking of putting some text on the shield but that seemed like an odd idea.... Why would someone write something on a shield that was going to get bashed up.... I will probably change my mind when it comes to do the next one but oh well :P Not much more to say other than that.... Oh yes there is, I actually times painting this guy.... I started at 10.30 this morning and finished at about 4.05 with a break for lunch. So this is about four and a half to five hours work including drying time. Ive never timed myself before so it was interesting to know.

Ive just noticed one of the side angle shots is a bit blurry... Sorry about that.

Awesome models, but what codex are you using? From here it would seem like Space Wolves, considering the Combi-Melta in the first post.

Amazing models mate, truly beautiful!

These guys are great, looking forward to more. I'm a bit confused about the shield building instructions though ;) , what do you do with the 2 sheets of plasticard?

I just read your first post about what you don't like about terminators and then looked at the models before it struck me, to actually operate the arms of the armour they would have to have an extra joint in there arms. :P

Good call. Yeah I am planning on using the space wolf codex. As far as I could see there were two ways of be doing a first company, deathwing or longan led sace wolves.... I decided on the space wolves as it would allow for more weapon combos to give a more interesting array of looks for the terminators and it would let me use veterans (wolf guard) in power armour as troops too.

@ Bloodhowl: Yeah, your right. It work terminator armour would cause some huge biological issues.... Its always been the case. The legs are also far to wide apart. Basically I think what happened is the people modelling them treated them like modelling a bulky living creature not as a living creature in armour that makes him more bulky. When I made an inquisitor scale terminator I had a number of problems because at a larger scale these things become even more apparent.

Basically what you do for the shield is take two bits of plasticard, which together are the thinkness you want. Then holding them together bend them to the approximate shape you want just to check the shape and get the plasticard a bit more to the correct bend. The next stage can be done a variety of ways.... You can get super glue that actually takes a little longer to become solid (like 20ish seconds) but still sticks as well as normal super glue. With that just put glue between the layers, put them together and hold them to the shape you want. Otherwise its best to glue one side of the bend. When that is dry bend the back half to shape, and hold it while applying glue, then bend the front bit into shape attaching it to the back piece. Hold it till the glue is dried. Then the glue should hold the bend in position.

I hope that helps. If not let me know and I will try to explain it a bit better.
