The Spears of Ultramar

Recommended Posts

Yep, no spear for the cyclone. It just seemed too impractical so I made the change in the name of common sense :P

Basically anything thats white (spear tip, shoulder pads, combi weapons, halberd head (and when I get around to making it a trident head) are all casts in resin.

As for how hard they are to do.... They are not especially hard but are by no means easy in parts this small. There are also almost always air bubbles which have to be green stuffed over. But it means the spear tips are the same every time and it would be a pain in the arse to get the components :P

The original axe head for the halberd is from the BA honour guard set (with some modification).

Hope that helps.

First off love the guys. Really like how you have taken them with the spears and the painting is wonderfully done.

The NMM follows the gold in white dwarf around the blood angel release for painting the sanguinor. The silver follows the same theory but substituting colours for grey shades and any purple/red shades for blue shades instead. I would make a tutorial but it would replicate whats in white dwarf and I dont know if that is allowed.

However this saddens me. As one who doesn't subscribe I have no ideas how to do non metallic metals but want to. I mean I have a basic idea about how silvers are grays and golds are yellows but besides that I have no where to start. Could you at least provide some tips? Like maybe things that you ran into that were not brought up in the article, or otherwise common sense stuff?

Having got some work and infinity out of the way I have had time to paint the squad sergeant.

Followed the normal recipe here so not much to say. One thing that's different the obvious addition of the banner. Now I wasnt sure what to do for this. I thought about a basic squad marking kind of thing but ended up deciding that this was a good chance to put in some work to really show the enmity between the chapter and the tyranids. So I decided on a scene showing the action that had made this marine worthy of not only joining the ranks of the veterans but become a squad leader. Taking on a huge ass tyranid beasty!

Mmmm.... Well the basic things for the gold NMM (and Im far from an expert) are using yellowy brown colours (such as snakebite leather) and working from there getting lighter (using bleached bone) and darker using browns. As in the guide I used a reddy brown (dark flesh) and add black to it. Honestly the guide in the white dwarf really does cover everything, its one of the best painting guides I think I have seen... EVER. If someone knows the issue number off the top of their head please can you let people know what it is in case you have a chance to get hold of it.

I love this Terminators. They look so used and real. Great Conversions and really great Paintjob.

I know the WD NMM Tutorial, but I think the Magmatrax Tut here on B&C is better. But im even more far from an expert than you. I'm still in another Galaxy you passed long time ago, when I look at your Gold. :)

Can I have a CloseUp from the Banner please?

Amazing work - you've made the armor look rich yet weathered; fits perfectly. The seargent is especially impressive (and I've got my eye on that halbred...hmmhmmhmm). As an elite killteam with a specific enemy, it'd be cool to see some kill markings or trophies from their victories - but maybe that's more a Space Wolf thing than an Ultramarines thing. Would love to see what you do with a dreadnought!

Alright thanks. It helps explain some things. I'm living in Belgium and so when I went up to Brussels I asked in shop there about if they had any luck with it. The guy didn't but he did have one of the copies of the White Dwarf it was it. Down side is that only the colors are in English and I don't read enough French. ~_~

Thanks for the comments guys. Ive tried to take a close up of the banner but it keeps coming out blurred. I think I need to do it in natural light.

The white dwarf with the gold NMM I follow is 364 for anyone interested (the one with BA codex front on it).

If anyone has a link to Magmatrax Tut's tutorial that would be cool if you could put it up too.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Ive had a few calls for different things from different sites so I thought I would pile them in together.

The first is a close up of the banner. Its a little blued and (because of Im guessing the light) the white looks a little thinker than it is on the eye and around the edging.

The other thing some people have asked for is a quick tutorial on how I green stuff my ultramarine U's. Again the pics are a little blurry so sorry about that.

1. Get a small blob of green stuff (as round as possible) and attach it to the model. I actually glue it down as it makes it easier to work with but that does mean that if you do somethign wrong you have issues.... Just a warning. You also want the glue to be slightly lower than the centre of the U. You will see why later. Wait for a good 20mins (this just makes the green stuff easier to work with) and softly push the green stuff flat. Because you had a sphere of green stuff this should be pretty easy to make it round.

2. Take some plastic rod with a diameter of whatever you want the centre hole to be. Dip the end in either some water or Vaseline (I prefer the Vaseline) and push it in the centre to make the centre hole of the U. This is why you dont want the glue that holds the green stuff in place in the middle as it will cause you issues. At this point you want to tidy up the green stuff to being as flat as you can and as round as you can.

3. Once the green stuff is cured for a good few hours (minimum) you want to cut out a thin slice out of the top. This begins to form the more recognisable U shape.

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Ultras/DSCF4217.jpg

4. Add green stuff to the top (preferably glued on) and allow it to dry for a good hour or two (again as a minimum).

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Ultras/DSCF4218.jpg

5. Cut the the top section of the U. And your done.

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Ultras/DSCF4219.jpg

This can be done on whatever scale you want and as you can see its more about letting things dry before you do the next part.

Well its been a long time since I have had a chance to do much work on these guys. Annoyingly I have been rather busy (something which doesnt look likely to change).

I have finished making one more terminator. I had a tough time on a couple of things for this one but the biggest was choosing how to do the combi flamer.

I ended up deciding to go with an underslung flamer similar to the one in the new FW book. One change was that I wasnt really sure on the flamer fuel being kept beneath the handle of the combi flamer. One it would be harder to model so that you can tell that there is the fuel under the handle and it didnt make the weapon obvious as to what it is. So I put the fuel cell at the front of the weapon so that a normal marine could hold the weapon double handed and so that the fuel is as far away from the user as possible. I know its unlikely a marine would be worrying about this but thought it made sense as far as design went if the fuel cell was going to be exposed.

I was also working on some legs for the power armoured veterans so that they would stand up to the height of the terminators. The plan is to make five different legs and then cast them so I can make my two units of 5. Here was the first:

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Ultras/DSCF4229.jpg

To cut a long story short the legs ended up a little too beefy. These would be fine normally (and Im actually really happy with this as far as true scale goes) but as I couldnt bulk out the terminator legs too much without them looking silly in comparison the power armour looks nearly as big as the terminator armour. I didnt like this so I have scrapped this set of legs and started on a new set. These arnt done yet but hopefully soon.

Well, the problem with the combi-flamer fuel canister is that it's too far forward. That thing spews out promethium at around 600 °C which is a problem if the canister is so near...but anyway, it's a job well done on the rest of the mini

I decided that wasnt a problem. If the barrel (which is closer to the lighted promethium when it ignites) doesnt melt then the canister sure wouldnt.... Also as a one shot weapon heating up isnt a problem compared to a weapon that is in constant use. But I appreciate the input.

This is all just utterly fantastic. I couldn't pick a favorite if I was tied to a chair and ordered to at gunpoint - they are all just flipping great. You should be really proud of these guys.

Also: did you ever get your bare heads? I have quite a few standard issue Screaming Bald Men that I will never, ever, ever do anything with (I prefer my marines helmeted) so if you're still looking to trade for parts, shoot me a PM. (I recognize I am very late to the party. But if I don't ask, I'll never know if you still need stuff.)

Well its been a while. Ive been a bit busy and distracting myself with Infinity. But I was caught with the "making bug" so thought I would get working on another terminator.

I wanted to do something a little different to what I had so far and make a little more of the base. I really wanted to have some interaction between the model and its base and after some thinking about what terminators needed to be made I decided to go for the "hot shot" terminator. To show off his ability to be really precise I felt I really needed to do something that put focus on the fact that he used his gun before anything else. So I came up with the idea of having him holding his combi-plasma gun double handed, as if he really had to have an unbelievably steady hand for some awesomely long ranges shot, putting a plasma shot through the eye of a nid bio-titan or something. With that decided, I still needed to have the spear that the terminator was armed with somewhere on the model. No where was making sense but then (after watching an episode of deadliest warrior where they always have more weapons than one person could possibly carry and have to store them some how) I realised that it could look pretty cool if he had stabbed it into the ground before standing on a barrel (which would obviously crush a bit under the weight) to take up a firing position.

Anyway, enough rambling from me.... Here he is:

@lemainus: Thanks man. Yeah I did get enough but thanks for the offer.
