Good parts ratio?

Recommended Posts

In a topic a few weeks back it was mentioned to me that the DC box is almost like a BA upgrade sprue. I was wondering that was a normal thought and what a ratio of DC to Assault marine boxes was. Will the DC box give you 10 marines or more? I know this depends on how you mix it with the assault marine box but I am looking at BA pads on the left for all and some mixed parts. Thoughts or ratios?

Thanks

its long but it will awnser any questions you have.

White Dwarf 364 (April 2010) gives you a nice illustration with all the sprue components (Also provided for the Sanguinary Guards box). I had written it down when I read it to figure out what bits I would get with a couple boxes:

3 bare heads

5 helmet heads

5 torsos

5 jump packs

5 backpacks

5 pair of legs

20 shoulder pads

5 bolter right arm

5 left arm (supporting the bolter)

5 bolt pistol arms (3 right 2 left)

5 chainswords (2 right 3 left)

1 power sword right arm

2 infernus pistols arms (1 right 1 left)

2 hand flamer arms (same)

2 plasma pistols arms (same)

1 power fist

1 thunder hammer

+ some bits (purity seals, wings, knife/grenades...)

IIRC, everything in that list is unique. I mixed together 2 DC boxes, 2 Assault Squad boxes, 2 command squad boxes, some leftover marines and additional jump packs to make 30 Assault Marines, one Honor Guard and some veterans. They are all full of bling :-)

To be honest, there is a HUGE amount of DC specific stuff, and unless u want to spend time with green stuff filling in a lot of recessed crosses I would only get 1 DC box and buy Sanguinary Guard for BA specific bits if you need any more.

And the Sanguinary Guard boxes have a lot of SG specific stuff as well (Winged Shoulder Pad, specific Jump Packs, Artificer Armor, Wrist-mounted weapons, Glaive encarmine arms, etc). IMHO, unless you really want the SG box for your Elite/HQ conversions (or the guards themselves) it's better to get another DC box. Crosses are just crosses, I didn't file most of them, just left them alone (sometimes painting them yellow/gold/black - it only looks DCish if decide it does and paint them red on black :to: and it doesn't look too bad.

Of course, we wouldn't be having this discussion if GW had given us a real BA upgrade box... :(

None of those things are Sanguinary Guard specific.

Neither are the crosses on the DC shoulder pads, legs or arms then... Replace "SG specific" with "strongly SG themed" if you wish.

Edit: Note that was I speaking in the context of making assault squads. Like I said, for elite/HQ stuff like officers, veterans etc the SG bitz are lovely. But normal assault troops, I think the DC box is much closer to what you need.

I think I might do an every other box thing (ie 1:1 Assault to DC) . It would let me do a lot of bling and give me some extras. I like having good pads on there and having an unique looking force. That gives me extras for commanders etc too.
The pads in the SG box can all be used easily without looking too out of place. Obviously the huge over the top winged pads would be suitable for sergeants, HQs and Veterans. In the DC box you do get some nice special weapons, but again a lot of them have the DC iconography on the hands.
A lot of the bits from both boxes are very detailed. While awesome, this also makes it very easy to distinguish certain bits. Maybe its just a personal thing, but whenever I look at an army with very repetitive bits I think "how odd that 4 purity seals are flying at exactly the same angle" or "that style tabard must be very popular". I'd be careful mixing them in a heavy ratio, even 2:1 vanilla:blood angels is too much for my taste for anyone but a centerpiece model, like sergeants, HQ, etc.
In an effort to not add a new topic I am wondering along the same lines of Kit Bashing would a SG be made into a Captain (or vice versa)? I was looking to use some SG parts into a Captain and make something unique with a more regal look. Something to make it look more ornate and like he is a vet especially with the SG jump pack. Would this work?
