silverneil
I was contemplating the the Space Wolves codex this evening and looking at the wolf lord names. It's clever how the writer got those nordic wolfish monikers and I wondered what they used for inspiration. This was after a long day at work so the mind wanders off in funny directions. I was looking at the entry for Erik Morcai and his more stable twin, Irnist the Wise. It struck me like a very clever play on the names (and characters) of those classic comedians Morecombe and Wise (Eric Morecombe and Ernie Wise.) Has this been spotted before (I've done a search and found nowt) , is it a figment of my imagination or do codex writers have a very subtle sense of humour? Also, has anyone else worked out other character names and seen where the inspiration came from in the 'real' world. So.........Its goodnight from me..........(cue loads of cheesy puns) :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/207812-gw-sense-of-humour/ Share on other sites
Rider-75
sometimes it is very unsubtle. ask the dark angels about the origins of their primarch's name......make sure you duck afterwards! but they often grab references from all over the place. the original RT-era jetbike was a Vincent Black Shadow, a real bike from the late 1940s. tycho - from tycho brahe, danish astronmer mephiston - mephistopheles/mephisto from the legend of Faust. ragnar - a main character in The Vikings, played by Ernest Borgnine ghazkul mag'uruk'thraka - try reading the second name as Margaret Thatcher the list goes on Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/207812-gw-sense-of-humour/#findComment-2479118 Share on other sites

The_Betrayed_Spacewolf
it was figured out on warseer. generally gw is the dry humour extraordinaire, you got lizard men skinks named tic tak toe and count vonceupunahtime, and its a whole lot of puns and other oh god why moments. The Normish
ghazkul mag'uruk'thraka - try reading the second name as Margaret Thatcher That is hilarious. From now on, I'll be referring to my Ork opponent's Ghazkull model as Mrs. Thatcher. Aside from that, I have found the humor to be a bit blatant at times, though I can't think of examples at the moment. Related: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kazimierz_Pu%C5%82aski If the name looks familiar, it's because the IG cavalry commander has (a slightly different version of) the same name. His other name has an entirely different, cavalry-related origin. And the modern depictions of Colonel 'Iron Hand' Straken make him look almost disturbingly like Marcus Fenix from Gears of War. GW loves them some references. -Stormshrug Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/207812-gw-sense-of-humour/#findComment-2480405 Share on other sites

WLK 700 years old? Logan is old as hell. Eternal Warrior? Wolverine is one. Seriously. Look at the 3rd Edition SW Codex, his image is VERY Wolverine. Combat and Strategy master? Yup both are. I see why Ragnar is Wolvie, thing is just being angry does not make him Logan. And it was about similar names, not about similar characteristics.
