Fred Johnson the 3rd jr
I feel like trying a 1500 point list with 3-4 Thunderwolf Cavalry, plus a ThunderWolf Lord. The Lord kitted out, the cavalry with a power fist or thunder hammer, and little stuff to make them different for wound allocation. Besides taking some GH squads, and perhaps a couple of Long Fang packs to help bust open transports / thin down hordes, what works well with Cavalry? Should I make most of my GH squads assault focused (for CC, Wolf Standard, WG powerfist, GH powerweapon, wulfen) or keep them cheap? If cheap, what other assault components should I have? Is using Rhinos to give the cavalry cover viable? Or should I spend the points for a cheap fenrisian wolf shield? Or something else? I know I asked a lot of questions, but any advice / insight would be appreciated. Thanks... Grimtooth
You GH support your thunderlord and cavalry, your thunderlord and cavalry support your GH, and your Long Fangs support all. Don't fall into the trap that a thunderlord and cavalry are your end all to end all unit. They do die and sometimes to the most basic things. Support, support, support. Never run into something with either unit without full support of the other. The combination of hard hitting, high toughness models (TWC and thunderlord) and the shear number of attacks, including special (MoW, power weapon/pfist,) from GH is a serious force to reckon with. robert531
I run three TWC and a Wolf Lord with my 1500 and 1750 lists. I also run three GH packs and two Rune Priests. Using the TWC and Lord as a support unit greatly increases the effectiveness and survivability of the unit. I have made the mistake of running them up the middle or having them flank by themselves and though they kill some units they usually fall to some pretty basic weapons or some mass close combat. Brother Ramses is right about the GH as your main efffort. Everything else just supports them. I also started reserving my TWC and Lord for most missions where feasible and that tends to work out great considering the speed of most enemy armies. It keeps them alive a little longer and lets them get all of their attacks in on turn three or four, only to continue the carnage on subsequent turns. Always try to use 2:1 or odds when attacking with your space wolves. Hope this helps. Simo429
Scouts especially with melta bombs work well with TWC I find because if they want to target your toughness 5 wolves with anything that will insta kill them they have to keep them still Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/207884-thunderwolf-tactics-army-synergy/#findComment-2480655 Share on other sites
Requiem of the Wolf
Use the Thunderwolf Cav to get your opponents entire Attention focused on one small peice of your army. Use your Long Fangs to bust the Transports, and your Thunderwolves and Lord to rip apart his troops. You have a 19-24 inch threat range so as long as you can keep them in the relative middle and ensure they charge a new unit at every oppurtunity, your opponent will drive himself nuts trying to stop you. This will allow your Grey Hunters to move to where you need them to be to take objectives, defend objectives or otherwise act as a surprise for your opponent. Also If you have the slots and models for it,a TWL with SS,FB,Saga of the Bear and 2 TWC one SS,one TH with a second TWL with SS,FB,Saga of the Warrior Born and 2 TWC one SS,one TH. Use the bear Wolf Lord against enemy psyker and hq units, the warrior born Wolf Lord against troops. Against most units, hitting on 3+,wounding on 2+ at I5 will mean alot of destruction on his own, with the Cav to spread wounds around you should have zero trouble. Though if you go with two sets, you will have to go very light on troops and Long Fangs, though you can still make it workable at 1500,it will work better at 2k.for 1500 I would only run the single set with an Extra cav attached to it. for 1500 try 3 full GH squads kitted out like you normally would (Wulfen,PG or MG,PS,WS and so on),2 full Long Fang squads with 3 ML/2 LC and 3 HB/2 ML and 3 TWC one SS,one TH&SS,one normal with a TWL kitted out pretty solidly.
