Emergency Disembarkation Question

After reading over the emergency disembarkation rules a few times I cannot understand what they are used for (when you would actually attempt an emergency disembarkation). Can anyone give an example of a case where someone would use or have to use emergency disembarkation, how it would work, and why they would do it? Also, when you use an emergency disembarkation, where do the models actually go? As I understand, you use emergency disembarkation when there are enemies within 1" of your disembark path or you would have to disembark into impassable terrain. Does this mean that you would place your models either within 1" of the enemy (illegal?) or within impassable terrain (impossible?), or within the vehicle's wrecked hull?

Thanks!

If the unit performs an emegency disembarkation the models can be placed anywhere within 2" of teh bvehicle's hull, not just within the raneg of an entry point. They do that so they do not have to move within 1" of enemy models or into difficult terrain. They may never to that. If that is not possible, because the transport is surrounded by enemy model or mountains or whatever, then the unit may not disembark at all.

The emergency disembarkation only has limited use. I could not think of a realy compelling reason to do it myself. One might perhaps be if you desperately want the unit out of the transport just so you can embark a different unitm already standing near the doors (and thus blocking them).

E.g. if a unit of Vanguar Veterans in a drop pod has slaughterea all enemies in the area they mow would have to walk to the other enemy units. But perhaps a tactical squad insie their Rhino is also nearby, and it would not be possible to move the Vanguard veterans within embarkation range if the Tactical squad was disembarked around the back door, clogging it. So the player could emergency disembark the tactical marines next to the Rhino and move the Vanguard Veterans towards the back, and then embark them.

Emergency disembarkation is an add on problem to the rules, to give players an out on trying to keep a unit alive if their transport is wrecked and the exits blocked. Instead of losing the entire unit, you just lose the models that cannot get out, within 2 inches of the hull but not within an inch of the enemy models. For some reason this does not include just standing on top of the wrecked hull. Instead of losing all 10, maybe you get to keep 5...or 2...or 1...

A good house rule would to allow emergency disembarkation onto the vehicle roof for wrecks. As it is, exploded vehicles require standing in the crater...

Bear in mind that mariens unlike all other enclosed transport armies apart from Tau have more than one exit from the vehicle, meaning that its quite hard for an opponent to stop you getting out of a hatch.

Guard or eldar only have one exit and this can be stoppered by one marine model, hence emergency disembarkation does have a use, just not one that marines will use that often.

In regards to the one unit getting out and antoher unit getting into a transport, if the tranport hasnt moved then the unit can end up 8" away then the rhino moves, and the new unit moves to be within 2" of an access port, either that or squad A gets out on the right and squad B gets in on the left.
