Trud Coldfist
My local GW is a 2 man store, a rarity these days unless a bunker, and the guys had a difference of opinion that im now bringin to the fang here. When you "buy" a unit of wolf guard and then split them into pack leaders, do you have to maintain the original unit? for example if you want 3 pack leaders yoiu actually have to "buy" 6 so that you have the minimum squad size of 3 left over. The manager says you have to do it as was just mentioned, but the other guy who actually plays wolves says its ok to "buy" 3 guard and split them all off to pack leaders tho you still have "spent" 1 elite slot, furthermore its ok to buy 4, split off all but 1, and have sort of a dumbed down lone wolf. Obviously that last part isnt too great an idea but if i had the points lyin around, which i never do, i could see doin that with my guard. Yes, it is perfectly legal to buy a pack of # and then spread them all around as pack leaders. They will still take up the elite slot on FOC. It is also legal to buy a pack of 3 (minimum) and send 2 of them as pack leaders, leaving a lone Wolf Guard all by himself. But if he will get killed, he will immediately concede 1 kill point, as he is essentially the unit. Timberhawk
I have only played two games so it may not be the wisest thing, but I have actually done that last bit. I played a 2 team 500 point game (each player had 500 so a total of 1000 per side). I used 5 BC with a wolf guard and a wolf priest, 5 grey hunters with a wolf guard, a lone wolf with 2 fenrisian wolves, and one left over wolf guard in terminator armor with a cyclone (uh, yes, I just realized that was illegal since I didn't have a 5 man squad of WG but it was my first SW build so, oops).... Well, the lone WG lived because he kept making his invulnerable saves and he was never within range of anything like mass fire. *shrug* My partner (vanilla marines and second game of 40k) and I won against a new eldar player (his first game) and an experienced space marines player (he ran two full tactical squads with plasma guns and his captain). Hfran Morkai
If there was a requirement for the Wolf Guard unit to remain at a minimum of three (or any models) GW would have specified it. They already hit us bad enough with having to use a valuable Elites slot to get Sergeant equivalents.
