Bobman
Hello brothers. It's been a while but I dusted off my Wolves last night for a draw against Witch Hunters. With a tournament looming and fast running out of time to tune my list I'd like to pose a question. How many troops choices do you guys think is good for 1750? I've got 3 in at the moment which I think is the minimum. But with no time to test I can't decide if I wanna drop some toys (I do like the toys) and lever in another troops choice. I don't wanna get into details cause what works for one doesn't for another and life never works as planned etc. Just hearing what you guys do may help me to decide. Thanks for any help Bobman Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/208095-amount-of-troops/ Share on other sites

Karack Blackstone
Grey Mage swears by the same suggestion that has already been given, at least one troop choice per 500 points. Most of us don't see any issue with this, it keeps things strong but not overpowered, as you still need enough to take down the enemy. Hfran Morkai
I'd say a Grey Hunter/Wolf Guard (If Logan is taken) pack per 500, because although Blood Claws are scoring they can be unwieldy and don't do well sitting on objectives. Bobman
Sounds pretty solid idea. Means I'm gonna have to dump something funky for more basic dudes. I know Hunters barely qualify as 'basic' but still... Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/208095-amount-of-troops/#findComment-2482723 Share on other sites

Otherwise, how many do you currently have? Sometimes one can get away with a Razorback pack or two, but it really means your others need to be at least 8 or so strong. That's what I meant by 'barely basic'. What I got at the moment is; 13 man Blood Claw 9 man Grey Hunter 5 man Grey Hunter all with Wolf Guard. With the models I've got I can get another 5 man Grey Hunter pack in there without any major jigging of the list. Karack Blackstone
Sounds like a plan. Just keep in mind that the small GH units meet the army list requirements for number, but they can be taken out a lot easier. Warhorse47
Also, using the troops you have listed, you could have 3 9man Gray Hunter packs by using your BC as GH. Bobman
Also, using the troops you have listed, you could have 3 9man Gray Hunter packs by using your BC as GH. Yeah I know. But I still like using Blood Claws sometimes so I'm gonna stick with that. Everything fits in transports at the moment, apart from the extra GH pack. Grimtooth
I use 3 at 1750. For Ard Boyz I used 5. All GH all the time. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/208095-amount-of-troops/#findComment-2483376 Share on other sites
Wolf Brother Osric
I find it depends on what troops you are using. For Grey Hunters 1 pack per 500 Points works well. For Wolf Guard 1 pack per 500 Points if they are Power-Armoured, 1 per 750 Points if they are Terminators. IamCaboose
I don't like playing a 1750 game without at least 3 9 man grey hunter units. Recently I've been using 3 9 man units and 1 8 man(so the rune priest fits) and this list has gone 4-0 so far. You can never have enough troops. Caboose To point it out, not that I like to, but if you're using a Termy model in a Rhino transport that won't work. The rules state a Termy model won't fit. Otherwise, you can do that, if it's a LR variant, those can move Termies. As to this, I'd wager lots of troops in Apoc or sticking to the 1 per 500, rounding up most likely. Just be careful to know what one is doing if one is inclined to use small (5 to 6 man) squads in Razorbacks. I find the squads are way too small for major assault duty, even though a light armored cav force would make some sense as SW's... IamCaboose
Sorry, I should have pointed that all my units run with WG so the 8 man is 8+WG+priest. I don't use TDA on anyone...ever. rodgambit
The last few games I've played at 1850 I used 2 troops and did just fine. It depends on your playstyle and if you like to use your troops in assault or not. Grey Mage
Best all-around Troop unit in the game, can't really go wrong with at least 8 or so depending on your core other choices (mix and match.) Still, used well another 5-6 man unit *including WG?* would easily give you a bit more breathing room in objective games, and some extra 'meat' for kill point games. Though to be honest... my last 3k list had 60 GHs, 15 BCs, for scoring units.... we were doing a mini-apocalypse battle- 40 well armed and armored GHs falling from the sky, and 20 more with BCs driving up to support... a couple of dreads, some scouts.... yeah, it was beautiful- held off a 6k flank long enough to keep about 15 IG tanks from actually doing anything for the game, and some CSMs besides. Sadly the nercon player was tough enough to do the same on the other side with a :cuss ton of warriors, and stalled my allies advance. Ended with a draw- 2 contested major objectives, all minors wiped. ... wich is to say, I love our troops. If I didnt, I couldnt play this army.
